Thursday Night Games August 28th

First game on the brand new SEC Network was Texas A&M vs South Carolina.

It wasn’t Johnny Manziel, folks.

Kenny Hill might have looked better than Manziel with a 44 completions on 60 attempts for 511 yards and 3 TDs. He looked unstoppable.

Why are people surprised? Look at the history of Kevin Sumlin and his Offensive Coordinator. They always field an impressive offense like the one they showed tonight.

South Carolina definitely missed their starting Defensive Linemen from a year ago. Steve Spurrier may like to blast his own people like Jadeveon Clowney, but Clowney would have had pressure on Kenny Hill and nobody from the South Carolina defense did much of anything.

The Aggies controlled both lines on both sides of the ball and just dominated the Gamecocks.

It’s not Johnny Manziel, it’s Kevin Sumlin. He hasn’t ever had a defense in the past but looks to have taken steps to finally fix that as this Aggie bunch played somewhat better than they have in the past.

Texas A&M is moving way up my rankings and South Carolina may be off altogether. Dylan Thompson is no Connor Shaw in spite of what the experts told us. Thompson went 20 out of 40 for 366 yards and 4 TDs with an interception but looked off at times.

The great Offensive Line of the Gamecocks was manhandled most of the evening and their great Running Back Mike Davis was not a factor at all.

Georgia was my favorite to win the SEC East, but I didn’t see the drop off coming at South Carolina that the world saw tonight. Missing Clowney, Quarles and Shaw may have been too much for them.

Look for Kenny Hill of Texas A&M to start moving onto some Heisman lists.

Ole Miss vs Boise State

It was a rough first half for the Ole Miss Rebels’ offense. The Rebels have placed their title hopes on a great defense and Bo Wallace and he had 3 interceptions before half time and looked dazed and confused.

The Ole Miss offense was never able to run the ball on a surprising Boise State defense. They finished the night with 71 yards rushing at 2.1 yards per carry.

Sorry, that’s not going to get it done in the SEC.

In spite of the offensive problems, the Ole Miss defense played tremendously well.

Robert Nkemdiche showed a national television audience tonight why he was the top rated player in the country coming out of high school a couple of years back. After a mediocre freshman season, he really has turned it up and looked like the All American we all thought he would be.

Moving Nkemdiche inside makes the Ole Miss coaching staff seem like they have a lot of sense as he was dominating. They moved him all over the line all night long and he wrecked havoc with the Boise State offensive line and the backfield.

Nkemdiche only had 3 tackles on the night, but it’s the little things that don’t show up on the stat board that make a difference sometimes. He caused Boise State all kinds of problems and he diverted plays into his teammates and drew double and triple teams the entire game.

Ole Miss has 3 players that will probably wind up on my All American team in Robert Nkemdiche, senior safety Cody Prewitt, and new punter Will Gleeson.

Prewitt had a huge night with 7 tackles and 1.5 of those being for losses. He also had his first interception of the season and returned it 23 yards. Prewitt had some fantastic hits as did most of the Ole Miss defense and I think Prewitt is probably the top safety in the country right now.

Will Gleeson is right off the boat from Australia and had some booming punts and some well placed ones. He was incredible and averaged 47.25 on 4 punts while pinning Boise State on their own 1 yard line on one punt. We knew about the other two, but Gleeson was a pleasant surprise. He can boot it right footed but if that’s not convenient he can do it equally well with his left foot.

The Ole Miss defense even if you took out Nkemdiche and Prewitt was a beautiful thing to watch.

They were more than a little dominating and brought the wood time after time.

True freshman Defensive Back Kendarius Webster is a guy to keep an eye on. The Ole Miss secondary picked off 4 passes.

Boise State is always a lot better then those in the East believe. They recruit Florida, Louisiana, Texas, California and Hawaii and they gave Ole Miss fits at times last night.

Jay Ajayi is a big Running Back from Plano, Texas and had 20 carries for 86 yards and 12 catches for 93 more yards. He is another guy to keep an eye on this season.

Matt Miller at WR for Boise State is one to watch as well. He is the real deal and at 6-3, 215 he’s an excellent blocker at WR as well. He only had 6 catches for 84 yards in this game but expect those numbers to pick up.

Laquan Treadwell is a possible super star for the Rebels at WR. He reminds me a bit of Hall of Fame WR Michael Irvin in his size, hands and very physical with push off skills. He is a play maker. He’s also very aggressive and loves to mix it up with Defensive Backs.

Danica Patrick was in an Ole Miss cap on the sideline.

Rece Davis is so much better of an announcer than Brent Mussburger. So much easier to listen to.

Arizona State vs Weber State:

Weber State wasn’t much of a challenge for any top 25 team and Arizona State rolled them 45-14. Personally, my interest was in Sun Devil QB Taylor Kelly, RB DJ Foster, WR Jaelen Strong and transfer Offensive Lineman Christian Westerman. Plus, the 9 new starters on the Arizona State defense.

QB Kelly was 18/27 for 238 yards and 1 TD. He ran 3 times for 14 yards .

DJ Foster ran 15 times for 147 yards and 3 TDs.

Jaelen Strong had 10 catches for 146 yards.

Christian Westerman was about as expected against inferior competition.

The defense is a work in progress and was not that impressive after viewing the Ole Miss defense.

Other games of interest:

Rutgers beat Washington State 41-38 in something of an upset but as usual Mike Leach decided he didn’t need a defense as Rutgers Paul James ran for 173 yards.

Connor Halliday, as usual, had a big night with 532 yards passing and 5 TDs. But, that wasn’t enough.

I knew Vanderbilt might miss James Franklin, but they really got hammered by Temple in their opener, 37-7.

Utah had no problems with Idaho State winning 56-14.
