Mark Richt Miami

I do understand the move by the Georgia Bulldogs to be rid of Mark Richt, but I still think it’s nuts. Any time you have the talent and you are picked to win and you don’t, it is hugely disappointing. If it happens once, that’s understandable, but for it to happen several years in a row is reason for unrest and displeasure.

But, on the other hand, firing a coach with a 9-3 record can come back and bite you. Hey, don’t take my word on that. Ask the Nebraska Cornhuskers instead.

It took all of a few days because Mark Richt was scooped up by the school where he played and he earned his degree and I believe this is a good hire for the Miami Hurricanes.

Mark Richt posted a record of 145 – 51 at Georgia.

I believe he will do really well at Miami.

Richt is walking into a really good situation in Miami with the return of excellent Quarterback Brad Kaaya.

The junior from West Hills, California threw for over 3,200 yards as a sophomore after initially throwing for almost the same as a true freshman. As a freshman, he threw 26 Touchdown passes while the Hurricanes fell apart in 2015 and he only threw for 16 Touchdowns.

The biggest reason for optimism, other than Brad Kaaya, is the return of a lot of players for the Hurricanes and some good recruits coming in.

They return all 5 starters along the offensive line and their top 2 Running Backs in Joseph Yearby and Mark Walton. They did lose a couple of top receivers, but they return Stacy Coley. They also have outstanding recruits coming in at Wide Receiver in Sam Bruce, Dionte Mullins, Ahmmon Richards and Michael Irvin Jr. Plus, last year’s recruiting class brought in talented 6-5, 200 Wide Receiver Lawrence Cager.

The defense is another story with only 6 returning starters. Included in those losses is the entire

Defensive Backfield. But, they have some guys returning that played a lot last season so it shouldn’t be a problem for the new coaching staff.

The Hurricanes have been a powerhouse since the early 1980s, but they’ve fallen on hard times. 2014’s poor 6-7 record was followed up by a slightly better 8-5. But, former coach Al Golden was fired after an embarrassing 58-0 loss to Clemson.

Golden did recruit well at Miami and the talent is in place already for Mark Richt to get the Miami Hurricanes back on track.

Richt and his Hurricanes should win at least 8 to 10 games in his first season and after that we should start seeing Miami back in the competition for the national title picture.

Miami is one of the more talent rich areas in the entire nation and the Hurricanes can keep some home and they can bring in talent from other areas of the country because of the allure of warm weather and South Beach.
