Top 25 Players Returning in 2019

I considered doing a top 10 of the best players in America, but when I got there I decided there were too many good ones left off. Then, a top 20, and there were still missing players. Even at 25, there are a few more that belong. But, as of right now, these are my top 25 overall players going into the 2019 season.

1. Trevor Lawrence – Clemson QB: I’m tired of seeing this kid being dismissed by the media and SEC fans. Ask the NFL what they think of Trevor Lawrence. He did nothing, but come in as a true freshman and led his Clemson Tigers to the national championship. True, there are other factors, but not many could have done what Lawrence did all season long and as a kid just out of high school. Sometimes the quarterbacks get too much credit, but this time it is deserved.

2. Tua Tagovailoa – Alabama QB: Tagovailoa was the Heisman favorite all year until Kyler Murray kind of moved in ahead of him late in the season. But, this guy is a player and a winner. Yes, he had a bad game in the SEC championship and a below average game in the championship, but he’s still a great player with one more year as the starter at Alabama.

3. Jonathan Taylor – Wisconsin RB: He’s 5-11, 225 and has great speed. In 2 seasons at run happy

Wisconsin, Taylor has over 4,000 rushing yards and if players like this didn’t leave early for the NFL, he would smash all career rushing records.

4. Justyn Ross – Clemson WR: The star of the Clemson national championship win was none other than Justyn Ross a true freshman from the state of Alabama. In that game alone, he had 6 receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown. Ross averaged over 21 yards per catch last year and is obviously a big play guy.

5. Sam Ehlinger – Texas QB: Ehlinger had his struggles as a true freshman, but as a sophomore, he was a difference maker in leading the Longhorns to a 10 win season and a big bowl win over Georgia. At 6-3, 235 and a strong runner, the comparisons to Tim Tebow are natural.

6. Jerry Jeudy – Alabama WR: A blue burner that was a touchdown waiting to happen as a sophomore last season. He averaged almost 20 yards per catch and had 14 touchdown receptions.

7. Travis Etienne – Clemson RB: Not a big back like Taylor at Wisconsin, but an explosive one that sees the hole and then bursts through it in the blink of an eye. He ran for nearly 1,700 yards and averaged over 8 yards per carry while sharing running duties with 3 other backs.

8. Grant Delpit – LSU DB: Of course, the Tigers from LSU are going to have a defensive back on any top 25 list. Delpit is probably just the latest. He is a ball hawk from his safety position.

9. Jake Fromm – Georgia  QB: There’s a huge difference of opinion on Jake Fromm, but he’s a good QB with some arm talent and a cool head. This season will be his third as a starter and it should be his best and he should come out this year.

10. Isaiah Simmons – Clemson DB: He’s a defensive back in a linebacker’s body and plays up at linebacker and uses his speed to be a dominant player. He will step up this season to make up for the losses on the defensive front. He’s got outstanding speed for his size.

11. Rondale Moore – Purdue WR: Outside of Justyn Ross at Clemson, Moore was by far the best freshman receiver in the country this past season. Moore is more than just another top receiver, he’s also an outstanding return man. One of the most exciting players in the country.

12. Justin Fields – Ohio State QB: Fields expected to take over the Georgia quarterbacking job and when that didn’t happen, he elected to transfer to another program. Suddenly, it’s OK for anyone to transfer and not have to sit out so there was no reason to make up a story about a white baseball boy using the N-word talking about Fields. That doesn’t take away from Fields’ talents and abilities.

13. Xavier Thomas – Clemson DE: Since about 2013, or maybe earlier even, the Tigers have just reloaded up front defensively. One would think that they will be down a bit this season, but that’s probably not going to happen due to players like Thomas. In limited playing time behind the 4 starters, Thomas was a beast and now he will prove it as the starter.

14. Caden Sterns – Texas DB: A freshman All American a season ago, Sterns is a ball hawk that is all over the field. As a true freshman, Sterns led the team with 4 interceptions. The Texas defense is only going to get better under Herman and guys like Sterns are a major reason why.

15. Walker Little – Stanford OT: Little is one of the best young offensive tackles to come around in a while. I wouldn’t put him in the Anthony Munoz, or Tony Boselli category, but he’s close. He’s

about 6-7, 320 and may still be a growing lad.

16. Laviska Shenault – Colorado WR: Explosive athlete for the Buffaloes last season. Shenault can play receiver or running back, wherever he is needed.

17. AJ Epenesa – Iowa DE: Excellent off the edge, the back up defensive end last season moves into the starting lineup. AT 6-5, 275, Epenesa has some quickness and had 10.5 quarterback sacks last season and 16.5 tackles for loss. Great player.

18. Justin Herbert – Oregon QB: I don’t often say this, but Herbert might have better of coming out this year. He was projected as the first quarterback taken and it’s an extremely weak class. This year, it could be different, so he is banking on improving.

19. JK Dobbins – Ohio State RB: Dobbins is a compact running back who ran for 1,400 yards as a true freshman when he was forced to take over for injured Mike Weber. As a sophomore, Weber was back and Dobbins still topped the 1,000-yard mark. He’s an explosive player with great quickness on his 5-10, 215 body.

20. Collin Johnson – Texas WR: 6-6, 220 receiver that lacks maybe top end speed. But, he can get separation and can leap. At his size, he’s basically a tight end out playing wide receiver and has glue for hands.

21. CeeDee Lamb – Oklahoma WR:  One of two dynamic Sooner receivers last season and is bigger than his sidekick Marquis Brown. Lamb averaged nearly 18 yards per catch last season and had over 1,000 yards off of 65 receptions.

22. D’Andre Swift – Georgia RB: The Bulldogs lost 1,000-yard rushers Nick Chubb and Sony Michel and replaced them with the well-named Swift and Elijah Holyfield. Swift is a game breaker at about 5-9, 215 with excellent speed.

23. Najee Harris – Alabama RB: Harris was the top-rated running back that came out a couple of years ago. A big back at about 6-2, 230 Harris will now have the starting job all on his own. He ran for almost 800 yards a year ago. Alabama is always going to run the ball well, so expect a big year out of Harris.

24. Kenny Willekes – Michigan State: Former walk-on Willekes has been a star at defensive end for the Spartans. Michigan State led the nation in run defense and had a very solid defensive line led by Willekes and Raequan Williams. Willekes is a fun player to watch and has that big heart that fans

25. Mason Fine – North Texas: Undersized and the classic underdog, Fine has been a really good and accurate passer for the North Texas Mean Green. Fine threw for over 3,700 yards in 2018 and actually threw for over 4,000 yards in 2017. Fine is listed as 5-11, 185 and that’s probably a stretch, but he is an exciting player.

25A. Tee Higgins – Clemson WR: Can’t really leave off Higgins even though he was outshone on national title game night by teammate Ross. Higgins is a tall, speedy receiver kind of like Collin Johnson. A large portion of Higgins’ catches went for touchdowns. He should be a first-round draft pick after this season.

Others that belong in the mix and I may have missed a few more. Hey, it’s just April.
