Games Not to Miss Before Trick or Treating

It’s tough being a college football super fan. There’s a lot of games on every week that I personally have a lot of interest in watching. Please pray for my wife.

Here are some of the games in which I have the most interest:

Penn State at Ohio State: This is a great game featuring #2 vs #6. Last year, this game was the one that made the Nittany Lions’ season. But, this time the game is in Columbus, Ohio at the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes and it’s tough to beat the Buckeyes at their place. Penn State has a gutsy quarterback, the best running back, maybe the best tight end and a super talented crew of wide receivers. Plus, they have a really good offensive line. Ohio State counters with maybe the best defensive line in football and a tough linebacking crew. They generally have a first round draft pick in the secondary. One thing is for certain, the Buckeyes have speed on defense.

The Buckeyes have a good running game and they have improved throwing the ball. Penn State

might still be considered Linebacker U.

This one should be a fun game to watch and this one is a priority for me. The winner here takes control of the B1G.

Georgia vs Florida: The World’s Largest Cocktail Party they call it. Whatever the fans do there, it’s often a very good football game that’s evenly matched. Georgia leads this series 49-43-2, but that’s disputed. Hey, maybe they were too drunk to decide who won one of the games.

Georgia is ranked #3 and looks to be the real deal. But, sometimes they slip up in this game. One of the great stories in this rivalry, at least as far as Georgia is concerned, was the miraculous Buck Belue to Lindsay Scott pass play that covered 93 yards. That play helped Georgia on it’s way to the 1980 national championship.

While Florida is struggling this season, they still have the potential to pull off a major upset here. Florida coach Jim McElwain is too worried about supposed death threats to coach much football and the Gators probably get slobbered on by the dogs.

TCU at Iowa State: The Horn Frogs are ranked #4 and when was the last time that Iowa State was ranked in the top 25? They enter this game ranked 25th and a 5-2 record. TCU has playoff hopes and Iowa State stands in their way. Since the Cyclones put Kyle Kempt, from Massillon, Ohio in at quarterback they have yet to be beaten. The Horn Frogs have to change that if they have any hopes of a first playoff berth.

North Carolina State at Notre Dame: The 14th ranked Wolfpack enters South Bend to play the 9th ranked Fighting Irish with a 6 game winning streak and I am still scratching my head over their loss to South Carolina. The Fighting Irish have won 5 in a row since a 1 point loss to the 3rd ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Notre Dame has a good shot at a playoff spot, but they have to win out and they have a tough schedule. Quarterback Brandon Wimbush is like having another running back on the field, but he can throw well enough. The Irish have a great offense led by Wimbush, some talented running backs and receivers, plus a great offensive line. They are coming off a very impressive beating of long time rival USC.

The Wolfpack have a really good defensive line led by defensive end Bradley Chubb who is one of

the best in the nation. The Pack’s offense is led by solid quarterback Jay Finley and star H-back Jaylen Samuels. This could be a great game and maybe the second best of the day. I don’t plan on missing it.

Georgia Tech at Clemson: The 7th ranked Clemson Tigers are coming off of a shocking Friday night loss at Syracuse. Georgia Tech is unranked, but the 4-2 Yellowjackets’ 2 losses were by a grand total of 2 points. Their option offense is a tough one to stop. But, if anyone can, it might be Clemson especially coming off of a loss and having an open date.

The question might be whether quarterback Kelly Bryant has healed up from an ankle injury that slowed him down against Syracuse. Plus, he had a concussion that finally took him out of the game completely. The Tigers have an outstanding offense and defense which should carry them to victory here. Even last year with Deshaun Watson, the Tigers were surprised by Pittsburgh and that game was at home. Clemson still has a very good shot at a playoff spot if they can finish up strong. It starts here and they will need to stop the very efficient running game of Georgia Tech.

This could be a very interesting game and do not underestimate the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets. That’s always a mistake.

USC at Arizona State: The 21st ranked Trojans are reeling from a huge beat down at South Bend, Indiana. Arizona State, while not good, is tough to beat at home. They are 4-3 with recent wins over Washington and Utah. They will be a huge test for USC who started the season as a playoff possibility. USC quarterback Sam Darnold turns the ball over too much to be a Heisman candidate anymore after leading the race in the preseason.

This is a game I am mildly interested in.

Florida State at Boston College: What a struggle the season has been for Florida State after losing quarterback Deondre Francois against Alabama. 6-5, 165 James Blackman is a true freshman and needs a lot of work, but he has so much potential. The Seminole fan base is so upset over a 2-4 start as they should be. Boston College started off poorly with a 1-3 record. But, they have bounced back strongly and are now 4-4. This game will be interesting to a college football fan such as myself

because both teams have come to a crossroads and both need the win badly.

Rutgers at Michigan: Everybody is all over Michigan right now. They lost almost everybody from last year other than 2 offensive linemen and one of them switched positions. Quarterback Wilton Speight returned, but he was lost a few games back. Michigan was just crushed last weekend against Penn State and will be looking for redemption.

Rutgers is much improved over last season and has 3 wins. Michigan should win big, but this game will be interesting to watch because of the desperate situation that Michigan is in currently.

Virginia at Pittsburgh: The Cavaliers of Virginia are one of the surprise teams of 2017. Virginia is sitting at 5-2 needing only one more win to qualify for one of the hundreds of bowl games which are available. But, any bowl game would be great for a program that’s had such a rough time of it lately. Pittsburgh is 3-5 and needs a win here badly.

UCLA at Washington: The Bruins’ head coach Jim Mora is probably coaching for his job with a 4-3 record and many tough games lying in wait. The Huskies of Washington still have hopes of winning the Pac 12 and a possible outside shot at a playoff game. In Seattle, the 6-1 Dogs have a huge advantage and they have every intention of finishing off the Bruins.

Duke at Virginia Tech: Hokie coach Justin Fuente is something of a quarterback whisperer. At Memphis, it was Paxton Lynch. At Virginia Tech, it was Jerod Evans and now redshirt freshman Joshua Jackson. The Hokies still have one of the best defensive coordinators in the nation in Bud Foster. The Hokies are 6-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to Clemson. Besides Duke, the Hokies have Miami, Georgia Tech, Pitt and Virginia remaining on their schedule.

Duke won their first 4 games and then lost 4 in a row to stand 4-4 and reeling. They want to stop the bleeding here. Don’t think for a minute that this game isn’t important to them.

There are a few other quality games, but mostly a lot of games with teams trying to stay off the bottom of the standings.

It should be another great weekend of football.
