Jeff George Sr was the Gatorade Player of the Year nationally as a senior at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The talented George signed with Purdue out of high school and he played there as a freshman. But, Purdue fired their coach, Leon Burtnett and hired a really conservative coach to replace him in Fred Akers. George did not want to run an offense like Fred Akers would install and he transferred to Illinois.
George was a star at Illinois and was later the very first pick in the 1990 NFL Draft going to his home town Indianapolis Colts.
George wound up playing 13 seasons in the NFL and with 8 different teams. He was never the great
Quarterback that people expected him to be, but he threw for over 27,000 yards.
I enjoyed watching him play. He walked up to the line of scrimmage with such a calm look on his face even though he was facing a tough defense. He almost looked bored.
He also had a rifle arm and he threw a beautiful pass.
Listed at either 6-4, 220 or 6-6, 200 and I have not stood next to him so I have no idea which is accurate. At Illinois, George threw for 4,995 yards after he threw for 1,217 yards at Purdue. As a college Quarterback, George threw for 6,212 yards.
Jeff George’s best season was his senior season when he threw for 2,738 yards and 22 Touchdowns while leading his team to a 10-2 record
Things were a bit different for Jeff George Jr in high school. Attending the same high school as his father, Jr was not exactly the Gatorade Player of the Year. While father was probably a 5 star in his recruiting class, Junior was a 3 star by ESPN.
As a senior in high school, Junior threw for 1,751 yards and 18 Touchdowns. He only played 2 years at Indianapolis Warren High School.
Just like his father, Jeff George Jr is not very mobile. Indianapolis Warren finished with an 11-3 record during Junior’s senior season and with his name one would think he would have been rated much higher.

Starting Quarterback, senior Wes Lunt, was injured against Purdue and was replaced by backup Chayce Crouch. Finishing up the loss to Purdue, Crouch got the start the following week at Rutgers which turned into a rare win for the Fighting Illini.
Illinois coach Lovie Smith is not very talkative about injuries, but Crouch was not available in Illinois last game.
Jeff George Jr was called on to make his first start at Quarterback for the Fighting Illini.
But, why did that first start have to come against the mighty Michigan Wolverines?
It wasn’t all Jeff George Jr’s fault as Illinois was just so over matched by highly rated Michigan.
George only completed 4 passes out of 15 attempts and 1 Interception. He did throw his first Touchdown pass.

The cameraman found Jeff George Sr in the stands and kept showing him. It was a forgettable start for father and son with the Wolverines crushing their team, 41-8.
