Ranking the True Freshmen Quarterbacks

This season I have already posted about the sensational freshmen Quarterbacks in 2015: Freshmen Quarterbacks

This is how I would rank the true freshmen Quarterbacks so far almost midway through the 2015 season.

1. Josh Rosen – UCLA: The media has noticed this kid, but I noticed him in high school. There is just something about him. As one of the announcers said the other night in his game, he just has a ‘presence’. When Andrew Luck was in high school, I was within a few feet of him and he had that same presence. The kid just has greatness all over him, much in the same way that Leonard Fournette has as a Running Back. He is just a special young player. In 5 games he has thrown for 1,243 yards and 9 Touchdowns. Every body is ranting and raving over junior Quarterback Jared Goff of

California and he started off impressively, too. Different coaching staff and different situation, but they are much the same build with the same type of talent. I think that Rosen is better long term than Goff and Goff should be a first round pick. I am as high on Josh Rosen as I have been on any true freshman Quarterback as any I have seen in recent years.

2. Drew Lock – Missouri: If not for Rosen, I might be saying that Drew Lock is the most impressive true freshman Quarterback in the country. Lock is in a completely different situation than Rosen and playing behind an experienced returning starter in Maty Mauk. Supposedly, the intention for the Missouri Tiger coaching staff was to redshirt Lock and then bring him along slowly next year. Lock was ESPN’s 6th rated Pocket Passer behind Blake Barnett, Josh Rosen, John Kolar who signed with Oklahoma State, Brady White of Arizona State, and Jake Browning of Washington. Lock was so good in practice, that the coaches had to get him into the game. Then, starter Maty Mauk was suspended and Drew Lock became the starter against a tough South Carolina defense and their own impressive true freshman Quarterback Lorenzo Nunez who is ranked 8th on my list.  Against a tough team, Drew Lock led his Missouri Tigers to a 24-10 win over the Gamecocks and only threw for 136 yards. But, he completed 21 out of 28 passes and hit 2 Touchdowns. It’s not totally about the stats, it’s about much more than that mostly their long range potential.

3. Lamar Jackson – Louisville: This elite freshman Quarterback is a spectacular athlete. Not only does he have a nice, strong arm that should be able to make all of the necessary throws, but he is an outstanding runner. Last Saturday, in a Cardinals win over a good North Carolina State football team, Jackson demonstrated great speed in a 68 yard Touchdown run. After 5 games this season, Jackson has thrown for 598 yards and he has run for 435. But, against North Carolina State, he got the start and threw for 103 yards and a Touchdown while running for another 121 yards and yet another

Touchdown. The 6-3, 195 true freshman from Boynton Beach, Florida is one of the nation’s next big Quarterbacking stars. Lamar Jackson was only the 17th ranked Dual Threat Quarterback recruit in the country last year and has already proven he was under ranked.

4. Seth Collins – Oregon State: Collins was the 55th ranked Dual Threat Quarterback on the ESPN list, but nobody really wanted him coming out of high school. New Oregon State head coach Gary Andersen brought him in at mid term and Seth Collins looked good in the Spring. Seth Collins and Marcus McMaryion had a heated battle in August for the job and Collins eventually won out. The 6-3, 195 freshman from San Diego has thrown for 581 yards and 5 Touchdowns with only 1 Interception. He has also run for 306 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Collins has looked very good at times in the Beavers 2-2 start. Their losses came against highly improved Michigan and Stanford. Collins looks like he has the ability to be one of the better future Quarterbacks in the Pac 12 even with Josh Rosen playing at UCLA.

5. Brett Rypien – Boise State: The son of former Washington Redskins Quarterback Mark Rypien. The son grew up in Spokane, Washington and not many recruiting services see players in the Spokane area. Rypien was nonetheless a 4 star prospect and the 15th ranked Pocket Passer in the nation. He has thrown for 718 yards and 6 Touchdowns and hasn’t thrown an Interception all season. He looked really good in his first start against Virginia on national television. Rypien did not play until his third game and then came in later and started the past 2 games and has put up nice numbers.

6. Jake Browning – Washington: Husky coach Chris Petersen went with Jake Browning over KJ Carta-Samuels and Jeff Lindquist. The 6-2, 205 freshman from Granite Bay, California was rated as the 5th best Pocket Passer on the already mentioned ESPN list and they appear to have gotten another one correct. In 4 games, Browning has thrown for 996 yards and 5 Touchdowns. He has thrown 4

Interceptions, but that’s going to happen especially with a freshman Quarterback. Browning isn’t the prototype Quarterback like some of the others at only 6-2. But, he appears to have all of the other tools.

7. Jarrett Stidham – Baylor: Stidham was a 4 star recruit out of Stephenville, Texas which is where Baylor Bear head coach Art Briles made a name for himself. Stidham was the 2nd rated Dual Threat Quarterback in the country only behind Kyler Murray who was also from the state of Texas. Stidham is a better Quarterback coming in than most of the Baylor Quarterbacks. Stidham is plaing behind Seth Russell and won’t get much playing time for a while.

8. Lorenzo Nunez – South Carolina: From all of the years of watching Steve Spurrier’s teams, I don’t think he enjoys playing freshmen Quarterbacks. But, this season, he didn’t have much of a choice with the injuries to other Quarterbacks. Nunez is a talented youngster out of Kennesaw, Georgia with good size at 6-3, 210. He’s got the arm and he is very quick and a talented runner. Early on he has run for 299 yards and a score and he has thrown for 374 yards and 3 Touchdowns. He has thrown 3 Interceptions as well, but many guys that aren’t freshmen throw them as well. Nunez could be really good as early as the end of the season or the beginning of the next.

9. Chason Virgil – Fresno State: I wrote about Virgil earlier in this blog: Chason Virgil

Fresno State has had some good Quarterbacks with some of them playing in the NFL including Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders. Virgil has thrown for nearly 300 yards and he ran for 53 yards in limited playing time. He is not the biggest of the true freshmen Quarterbacks, but he is athletic.

10. Quinten Dormady – Tennessee: Dormady is a back up to starter Joshua Dobbs. I like his talent from what I have seen from the Spring Game and in limited playing time. He has only thrown 9 college passes and he completed 6 of those and he has one early Touchdown. Dobbs is the starter for now, but who knows what the future holds. The Tennessee coaching staff can recruit and has some more talent on the way, so Dormady may never play at Tennessee. He looks like a talent to these eyes.

Chase Litton – Marshall: I have no idea why this guy was not more highly recruited. But, he is 6-6, 205 and a gifted athlete. Could be a future star.

Bo Schneider – UCF: He’s a big strong kid from Dallas that has played already as a true freshman. This is the same program that produced 1st round NFL pick Blake Bortles.

Jeff Smith – Boston College: Talented freshman out of Florida that has been forced into duty by the injury to starter darrius Smith.
