2 Saturdays: Going For the Win

Hard to believe there are only 2 Saturdays left before the first football games and 2014 is officially under way.

Should be a really interesting football season. Will Florida State repeat as National Champions? Will Jameis Winston be the first guy since Archie Griffin of Ohio State in 1975 to win a second Heisman?

1987 Miami vs Florida State. It was #3 Miami vs #4 Florida State.

Both of these teams were underrated. Around 60 guys from both teams combined went on to play in the NFL. 10 of those guys were highly coveted 1st round draft picks. Some of the very best of the best on the field that day were Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin.

This was the big time.

Miami and Florida State had many, many memorable games over the years, but this game was about as good as any of them.

Miami scored first on a 29 yard Field Goal, but Florida State dominated the game. The Seminoles Sammie Smith had 189 yards rushing with the team having 225 yards total and Miami had 52 rushing yards total as a team.

The Seminoles built up a 19-3 lead behind Smith’s rushing yards and QB Danny McManus’ passing.

But, the Hurricanes came storming back.

Miami sophomore QB Steve Walsh was only in his third start at QB and he really had a rough game until late. He threw a 49 TD pass to Melvin Bratton and a 26 yard TD pass to Michael Irvin. With two 2 point conversions the Hurricanes came back to tie the game at 19-19.

The Florida State Seminoles drove the ball down the field to put the game away when QB Danny McManus fumbled the ball with 3 minutes left.

With slightly over 2 minutes left, Miami QB Steve Walsh hit Hall of Fame WR Michael Irvin on a 73 yard TD pass to make it 26-19 in favor of the Hurricanes.

Florida State got the ball back with 2 minutes left on their own 27. Danny McManus drove the Seminoles down the field and they scored with 42 seconds left on the clock. It was 26-25 in Miami’s favor with little time left.

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden had already decided if the situation arose that he would kick the Extra Point and go for the tie.

But, he changed his mind.

The Seminoles went for 2, and they missed. Danny McManus pass to Pat Carter for the win was knocked down by Miami’s Bubba McDowell.

The Miami Hurricanes won the game 26-25 and would go on to win the National Championship in 1987. But, you have to tip your hat to Bobby Bowden for not settling for a tie.

This was a sensational game no matter if you were a Seminole fan or a Miami fan and could have easily gone either way.

The game was also the first of many frustrating endings for the Seminoles. The Miami Hurricanes lead the all time series between the two at 31-27, but FSU fans have to wonder what might have been with better Field Goal kickers in many of those games.

Since Jimbo Fisher took over from Bobby Bowden, Florida State is undefeated against Miami.
