It’s just madness. Everyone thinks their team should be in the playoffs and it’s not even close to reality.
Let’s look at some of the craziness.
Florida Gators: They needed to make a move because their coach was just not right for the job. After being rejected by Chip Kelly and the fans wanting UCF coach Scott Frost, the Gators hired Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen. In spite of what I think of Mullen as a person, he can coach and he was the offensive coordinator when the Gators had Tim Tebow and won a national title.
Tennessee Volunteers: This is a strange one. Butch Jones led the Vols to some good times, but he had fallen out lately and this season it completely came unraveled. It’s not just the loss of Joshua Hobbs at quarterback. You had to know something was wrong when they gave up over 500 yards
rushing to Georgia Tech in their opening game. The fans want to hire Gruden, the Monday Night Football announcer and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach. It’s not going to happen.
The athletic director hired Greg Schiano, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator for about 5 minutes. The fans went nuts and the Vols backed out of their offer to Schiano. The latest I heard was they were rejected by Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. That’s more craziness. Gundy is an Oklahoma boy that played for Oklahoma State. He’s got it made there and will probably never leave.
Texas A%M: The Aggies fired Kevin Sumlin after a so-so career at College Station where he posted a 51-26 record. He mostly had success with Johnny Manziel at quarterback. The Aggies weren’t satisfied with 5 loss seasons and they want to beat Alabama. Everybody wants to beat Alabama and occasionally it will happen. The rumors have Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher heading to Texas A%M. Time will tell.
Arkansas: The Razorbacks did the right thing in getting rid of Bret Bielema, but the timing is awful. The names being thrown around on the internet are more of the same. Gus Malzahn of Auburn was the favorite and he is from Arkansas. But, will he leave Auburn after just beating Alabama and possibly winning the SEC Championship game on Saturday? It would appear not.
There are some good young coaches out there, but will they go to Arkansas is the question. The big name guys are either already gobbled up, or will go elsewhere.
Ole Miss: They fired Hugh Freeze before the season even started for reasons we all know. They placed Matt Luke at the head position as an interim coach. After leading the Rebels to a 6-6 record, and beating rival Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, they named Luke as the full time coach. Time will also tell if they made a mistake, or did the right thing.

Mississippi State: They were forced into a change against their will when Mullen left for Florida. They’ve already made their move by hiring Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead. No doubt that Moorhead is a decent coach, but he’s from up north. How will a guy that played college football at Fordham University in New York City deal with Starkville, Mississippi? Seems like an odd fit. Moorhead has been a head coach before and that was at his own school, Fordham. He did win big there with a 38-13 record with an impressive 12-2 and 11-3 years leading the way. It’s a long way from Fordham to Mississippi State. I would just worry about the fit.
Nebraska: The Cornhuskers fired the athletic director that made the huge mistake of hiring Mike Riley. Then, they fired Mike Riley. By all accounts, Riley is an extremely nice man. But, the Huskers didn’t need nice, they needed somebody that wasn’t crazy like Bo Pelini and could win. I posted
several times on this blog that they should have hired Scott Frost, but who listens to me?
Now, Scott Frost is clearly the number one target for the new athletic director. The former Husker quarterback completely turned around a terrible UCF program that was 0-12 the year before he came. In two short seasons, the UCF Knights are 11-0 right now. Of course, the pressure is not nearly as intense at UCF as it is at Nebraska. With that said, the Husker fans are more supportive of their coaches than any other major college football program in the nation. With Frost at the helm, the Huskers will once again be a team to be dealt with.
UCLA: Jim Mora was a huge disappointment for the Bruins and he was fired recently. The Bruins then beat Florida for the services of Chip Kelly. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing, or a bad one. Kelly did really well at Oregon, but he alienated boosters and supposedly recruiting is not his thing. If the NFL taught him anything and he has changed his tune about recruiting, he could be deadly at UCLA. With every job opening in the past couple of years, Chip Kelly’s name was probably the hottest one out there and that’s suddenly come to an end which is a good thing in my eyes.
If the Bruins can succeed under Chip Kelly, that will force the USC Trojans to make a move as well.
Arizona State: The Sun Devils got tired of Todd Graham’s act and sent him packing. They want to be contenders for all the marbles and Graham was just not working out. I don’t know who they are possibly thinking about that could lead them to greatness, but maybe they will get lucky. Herman Edwards, yes the guy from ESPN that last coached about 10 years ago, is being tossed around. But, he hasn’t coached college football since 1989 when he was a position coach at San Jose State. He’s also 63 years old. He might work out, if hired, but he also reeks of desperation.
Florida State: They don’t need a coach right now, but they might soon if all of the rumors of his taking the Aggie job come true.
Did I leave any off? Before it’s all said and done there could be some more crazy happenings.
