All of the talk of Christian Hackenberg going in the first round are like pie in the sky if you asked me.
The Penn State Quarterback has been a 3 year starter for the Penn State Nittany Lions and he is currently in his junior season.
Unless you have been living under a rock, the past few seasons, the Penn State, Joe Paterno, Jerry Sandusky and NCAA Probation events are old news to you.
I don’t plan on boring with details with any of that, but Penn State has been an entirely different program since 2012 and head coach Bill O’Brien and then James Franklin.
Former coach Bill O’Brien recruited Christian Hackenberg and they were good in 2013. Hackenberg was one of the better freshmen Quarterbacks we have seen in a while.
In 2014, O’Brien had gone on to the NFL to take over the Houston Texans and James Franklin was hired to take over the Penn State program.
Hackenberg came back to earth last season during his sophomore campaign. As a freshman, his nearly 3,000 yards passing resulted in 20 Touchdown passes against only 10 Interceptions.
His sophomore year resulted in only 12 Touchdown passes all season and 15 Interceptions. The venomous fan base turned on him.
Maybe new head coach James Franklin is the problem, or maybe it was the traditional sophomore slump which seems to happen to Quarterbacks all of the time.
But, Hackenberg has looked much the same during the majority of his junior season as he did as a sophomore.
Christian Hackenberg is what they call the prototype. He is the perfect size for an NFL Quarterback at 6-4, 230. He’s got a nice arm, not the strongest we’ve seen, but he can make about all of his throws. In my opinion, his deep passes leave a little to be desired and a lot of guys throw a better deep ball.
He has taken a beating because of a poor Offensive Line the last couple of seasons and he has held up well.
Hackenberg has been sacked more than any other Quarterback in college football the past few seasons, but he has held up without going down to injury.
His stats don’t show it, but he can run a little bit which proves only that he is an outstanding athlete. These are all good in the eyes of NFL scouts.
What’s not good in their eyes is his inconsistencies. In the recent years of college football, the short passing game has taken over and Penn State has been no different. His erratic passing has looked pretty bad at times and he has been a barely over 50% passer for his entire time at Penn State.
Again, much of that is not his fault with the bad Offensive Line for much of his playing time and his being under heavy pressure.

Paxton Lynch from Memphis is having a brilliant season and might should be taken before any of them. He is a junior, but more than likely he comes out and he could have bearing on Hackenberg’s decision.
I realize the entire world will be against me for writing this, but being picked in the 2nd round is fine. Many people would be more than happy being selected in the second or third round, or even at all. Many would be perfectly fine with leaving college early and signing as a Free Agent.
But, I totally disagree with any of that thinking.
Being an extremely high NFL Draft pick is a life changer financially. It’s more than that, it would change the lives of your children and probably theirs as well.
There’s a good paycheck involved if you even make an NFL’s practice squad. But, if you are a first round pick and one of the very first guys going in the first round, it’s way more than a good paycheck. It’s like finding buried treasure.
Christian Hackenberg should return to Penn State because the Nittany Lions will be absolutely loaded next season. If he returns, the Penn State offense will have all 11 starters back and with a year of starting experience under their belts.
Then, there is budding super star at Running Back Saquan Barkley who as a true freshman looks to add something to the Penn State roster that they have not had in a long, long time. He’s potentially the best Running Back the Nittany Lions have seen in more than a decade.
The Wide Receivers are young, talented and improving. So is the Offensive Line and they are
threatening to no longer be a problem for the Penn State offense.
The Defense will lose some Defensive Linemen and some good ones like Austin Johnson, Anthony Zettel and Carl Nassib. Johnson is a junior, but he will likely declare for the NFL and Nassib leads the nation in sacks.
The Defensive Backfield loses Safety Jordan Lucas and Cornerback Trevor Williams, but the entire defense has some seriously good depth.
Should Christian Hackenberg decide to return to State College, Pennsylvania to finish out his college career, he will have the opportunity to play on a really good team.
Leading a really good team and playing well at Quarterback could much improve Hackenberg’s standing with NFL teams which could mean a top 10 pick. Being picked that highly would be worth millions of dollars.
I believe that Christian Hackenberg should roll the dice and come back to college football. He is definitely not going to be a top 5 or 10 pick in the next NFL Draft. The following year, he very well could be a top pick.
