It may sound crazy to talk about since the Ducks were in the national title game just 2 years ago. But, those teams had guys like Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota who were Chip Kelly recruits.
Helfrich took over for Kelly who moved on to the NFL, in 2013. His first team went 11-2, but they lost to Stanford for the Pac 12 North title and they had to settle for the Alamo Bowl where they beat Texas in Mack Brown’s last game.
2014 saw them beat Stanford and win the Pac 12 title and gain a berth in the first ever college football playoff. They lost in the championship game to Ohio State and finished their season with a 13-2 record.
Mariota won the Heisman and then left for the NFL and was the 2nd player taken in the draft. Without
Mariota, they still had enough to finish the season with a 9-4 record.
They broke in a new Quarterback to replace Mariota in Vernon Adams Jr, but he was a one and done being a graduate transfer.
This season, they needed a new Quarterback again and took another graduate in Dakota Prukop. The new Quarterback played well enough, but he was benched and the Oregon Ducks are 2-5 with 5 straight losses and some of them very bad.
Washington seems to be the new power in the Pac 12 North and the Ducks are going the opposite direction with the Huskies beating Oregon, 70-21.
Mark Helfrich is in a world of trouble and fans are calling for his head on a platter.
The trouble, as usual, is the defense. Talk about the Quarterbacks all you like, but when you have the worst defense in Division 1 football it’s going to cost you football games. This bad defense is costing Oregon games and will more than likely cost Mark Helfrich his job.
In the off season, Helfrich brought in former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke as his Defensive Coordinator and the thinking was he was getting serious about his defense.
But, the defense has been ineffective all season. Worse, actually, than ineffective. It’s just flat out
disgustingly horrible. There’s not a lot in my mind that is worse than a terrible defense.

People on the internet are already talking about possible replacements for Mark Helfrich. Of course, as usual, fans and writers are getting ahead of themselves. That’s also exactly what I am doing, just so I am not being hypocritical.
The problem that Oregon might have is that other programs are also going to be looking for a new coach. This happens every season and so far LSU and Purdue are looking for coaches. But, expect that list to grow as the season progresses. Texas fans are extremely upset with Charlie Strong just to name one big time program that might be looking. Kentucky is not happy with Mark Stoops and Auburn was all over Gus Malzahn, but his team has recovered as of late.
Great coaches are hard to find, but some of the names being tossed around are former LSU coach Les Miles, Houston coach Tom Herman, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, former Oregon Offensive Coordinator and current Central Florida head coach Scott Frost are some that I have seen already. There will be plenty of other coaches at other programs that will be discussed even former Duck coach Chip Kelly.
The perfect coach for Oregon could be former Baylor head coach Art Briles or current Syracuse head coach Dino Babers.
But, for now, Oregon still has a head coach. The Ducks could get out of the funk they are in and win the
rest of their games, but that is highly unlikely. With fairly good teams remaining on their schedule like Arizona State, USC, Stanford and Utah. They also have bitter rival Oregon State to play in their last game and the Beavers will probably be really eager for some retaliation.
The Oregon Ducks have a lot going for them and the job should be attractive to some good coaches.
They have great facilities, especially a really nice and loud stadium. The fans are very supportive, that is if you win. They have Nike founder Phil Knight on their side as well.
Whatever happens with Mark Helfrich, this is just a temporary dip in the road for the Oregon Ducks football program.
They will definitely be back.
