Georgia Quarterback Battle 2015

Matthew Stafford was a brilliant Quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2006 until 2008 when he declared for the NFL and was the first player chosen in the entire draft. He may not have won a Super Bowl in the NFL, but he is one of the better Quarterbacks in the league and the numbers prove that.

When Stafford left early, that left the Bulldogs in a huge bind with Senior Joe Cox as his replacement. Cox did his best and had a decent season in 2009, but the Bulldogs struggled through an 8-5 season.

In 2010, along came Aaron Murray and he was an instant star. But, the Georgia Bulldogs got off to a horrible start and never really recovered finishing 6-7 on the year.

Murray and the Bulldogs got better finishing 10-4 in 2011. The 2012 season saw the Bulldogs win 12 total games and came up just short in the SEC Championship Game against Alabama.

The 2013 season was a disaster for the Bulldogs and somewhat for Murray as well. They finished 8-5 on the year after losing nearly every skill position player on the team to one injury or another and a horribly unlucky play against Auburn losing on one of the freakiest catches ever.

Murray himself went down with an injury leaving Hutson Mason to Quarterback the Bulldogs against rivals Georgia Tech and the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Gator Bowl. The Bulldogs went 1-1 in those two games without Murray.

Hutson Mason was the replacement for Aaron Murray in 2014. The Bulldogs again had some bad luck losing the nation’s best Running Back, Todd Gurley. But, they still had enough ammunition to finish 10-3 on the year.

Mason was a senior, so the Bulldogs start over in 2015. But, they will do so without Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo who left to take the head coaching job at Colorado State.

Bobo was replaced by Brian Schottenheimer, the son of former long time NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer. The younger Schottenheimer has a lot of NFL experience and working with Quarterbacks.

What are Georgia’s best options at Quarterback for the 2015 season?

Brice Ramsey was a 6-3, 195 highly recruited 4 star guy out of Kingsland, Georgia that signed with the Bulldogs in 2013. Ramsey redshirted and then backed up Ramsey last season while beefing up to 215 pounds.

Ramsey got to play enough to throw 39 passes and he completed 24 of them for 333 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Ramsey has a good arm and throws a nice deep ball and more than likely is the starter for 2015.

Faton Bauta is a 6-3, 218 junior that has been in the program a little longer than anyone else. He played sparingly in 2013 and also in 2014. Bauta has always been known as the better runner, but is also one of the hardest workers on the team according to all reports I have seen. Everyone had all but written Bauta off until this Spring when he put up a fantastic battle for the starting job. For some reason when I see Bauta, I think of old Georgia Quarterback Buck Belue. He has a good arm, not a great one, but strong enough to get the job done. He is also mobile enough to scramble for a first down if needed. He’s just seemingly that guy that has enough arm strength, mobility, leadership and intangibles to be a winning Quarterback. I would not rule out Faton Bauta.

Brice Ramsey and Faton Bauta are getting first team reps. Ramsey was supposed to have this job sewed up going in and the heavy favorite to win it. But, Bauta supposedly has made a run at the starting job.

Another outside shot at Quarterback is redshirt freshman Jacob Park. The former 4 star recruit out of Goose Creek, Georgia is a fan favorite, but apparently a little behind Ramsey and Bauta in the Spring.

The Georgia Bulldogs have a commitment from the top Quarterback prospect in the country, Jacob Eason. Bulldog fans will be expecting the son of Tony Eason who played for Illinois and then the New England Patriots, to start immediately in 2016.

That’s a lot of pressure to put on a true freshman and hopefully Ramsey, Bauta or Park will step up. Of all of the game film I have seen, I pictured Jacob Park coming in and starting as a redshirt freshman.

But, as of now, expect Brice Ramsey to start in 2015 at Quarterback for the Bulldogs with Faton Bauta with an outside shot.

Georgia will have fantastic sophomore Nick Chubb returning who rushed for over 1,500 yards as a true freshman. They also have outstanding sophomore Sony Michel, Keith Marshall and Brendan Douglas. The Bulldogs return 3 out of 5 Offensive Linemen including outstanding Left Tackle John Theus.

The Bulldogs have as good of a shot as anyone of winning the SEC East next season.
