Chris Klieman was the head coach for a single season at Loras College and led the team to a less than inspiring 3-7 record. His next head job lasted for 5 seasons and he lost fewer games in 5 years than he had at Loras College in that one painful season.
But, that was because his next head job was at North Dakota State and the Bisons posted a truly inspirational record of 69-6 with 4 national championships.
It’s true that Klieman did not start the powerhouse that is North Dakota State, but he did manage to keep it going. That’s rarely an easy task, either.
Now, Chris Klieman is being called on to take over for Bill Snyder at Kansas State.
Is Bill Snyder a legend?
Put it this way, Kansas State went to one bowl game before the arrival of Bill Snyder. That’s right, that big ole number 1 that came right after that 0. It comes right before the 2, and it is the loneliest number.
With Snyder, the Wildcats went to 19 bowl games including 11 in a row before his first retirement. When the Wildcats went downhill after he retired, Snyder came back and coached them to another 8 bowl games in a row.
The stadium is named after him at Kansas State and was so even while he was still the head coach.
It’s pretty amazing what he has done at Kansas State. It’s not like the state of Kansas is a hotbed for high school talent and the talent the state does produce often leaves for places that have trees.

Snyder took over for Stan Parrish who coached the Wildcats to a rather depressing 2-30-1 record and his two wins came in his first season. Kansas State was 0-21-1 during his last 2 seasons.
Snyder was the head coach from 1989 until 2005 when he retired the first time and he was back in the 2009 season and just this past year retired for good.
You can beat a lot of things, but you can’t beat the clock and Snyder is 79 years old. He is the best thing that ever happened to Wildcat football.
Bill Snyder is a legend indeed.
It’s always tough replacing a coach with the status of a Bill Snyder. It took Alabama how long to find somebody they were happy with?
Texas went through numerous coaches and mistakes before finding Mack Brown. It’s just always been said that a coach shouldn’t want to be the very next coach after a man of Bill Snyder’s mystique.
Chris Klieman is the new guy at Kansas State and time will tell how well he will do. He is used to coaching at schools with little high school talent in the area. North Dakota is another state much like Kansas, maybe even worse.
How will he do? It’s hard to say since I don’t see the future, but I feel like this could be a very good hire for the Wildcats. If he can recruit, which shouldn’t be a problem, then he can win and he’s going to have to do more with less which is what Bill Snyder did for 27 years.
Klieman won’t find a boatload of talent on the roster, but it’s hardly bare, either. Klieman is the type of coach that can probably win at Kansas State and maybe win big.
As always, time will tell so pop some corn and pull up a chair.
