Hardy Nickerson Jr

When Lovie Smith was hired at Illinois to be their next football coach, he brought at least one of his coaches with him. Smith named former NFL great, Hardy Nickerson as his Defensive Coordinator. I am liking both of these moves because the Big 10 West is needing some more beef.

Hardy Nickerson was a 5th round draft pick out of Cal back in 1987 and he was a 5 time Pro Bowler during his 16 seasons as a player in the NFL. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Green Bay Packers.

Lovie Smith was his position coach while Nickerson was playing Inside Linebacker for the

Buccaneers and they formed a relationship.

Lovie Smith later hired Nickerson to be his Linebacker coach when he was the head coach for the Chicago Bears. But, Nickerson had to resign after one season for family health issues.

After Lovie Smith was fired at Tampa Bay, Nickerson had already started over with his own life. Chip Kelly had just been hired as the new head coach for the San Francisco 49ers and he had hired Nickerson as his Linebackers coach.

But, Lovie Smith stole his old buddy back from Kelly and San Francisco when he was hired at Illinois.

Hardy Nickerson grew up in the infamous Compton and attended high school at a Catholic school in Watts.

He got out of the ghetto by gaining a football scholarship to Cal Berkeley and then he earned his degree in Sociology in 1989 while playing in the NFL.

In 2010, Hardy Nickerson was hired to be the head coach at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland. At O’Dowd, Nickerson coached his son, Hardy Nickerson Jr who was following in his father’s footsteps and playing Linebacker.

Nickerson was a 3 star recruit when he signed with Cal.

He redshirted as a true freshman. Then, in 2013, Nickerson became a starter but the Golden Bears finished their season at 1-11.

The Bears improved to 5-7 in 2014 behind Jared Goff and the Offense. But, Nickerson was one of the best Defensive players and was third on the team in tackles.

Last season, the Bears qualified for a bowl game and finished 8-5 with Nickerson leading the team in tackles. The 6-0, 225 Nickerson was one of the few quality defensive players for the Golden Bears.

The Cal Bears were counting on Nickerson and his leadership on defense for the 2016 season. But, his father landing the Defensive Coordinator’s job at Illinois was too much for Nickerson to resist. He graduated from Cal, so he can play immediately.

He is expected to start at Middle Linebacker for his new team and for his Defensive Coordinator dad in 2016.

It’s hard being a father in any circumstance, but it’s particularly hard when you are NFL player and coach. The coaches have such little free time that sometimes their personal lives suffer, but the wives and children may suffer the most.

Now, Hardy Nickerson Sr and Jr get to spend some quality time together even if it only lasts one season.
