The Tennessee Vols have always been a team I have admired and followed.
But, they sure got lucky on opening day of the 2016 season.
Appalachian State’s true freshman kicker missed an extra point and a Field Goal to allow the Vols to win in Overtime over the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers came to play and to fight and the Volunteers clearly did not.
The Vols were lucky to get out of this game with a win, but this could be an eye opener for the
program with tough games coming up.
Next week, the Vols take on the Hokies of Virginia Tech at Bristol which should draw an all time record crowd of 150,000 fans. Then, they have their SEC schedule coming up.
They obviously took the Mountaineers lightly which was a mistake and almost cost them an embarrassing loss.
Michigan should have taught us in the 2007 season not to take Appalachian State lightly.

Honestly, the performance by the Mountaineers was impressive. They showed a lot of heart and they fought to the very end against a much superior football team.
The most impressive of the night may have been Middle Linebacker Eric Boggs, Defensive Ends Caleb Fuller and Antonious Sims and Defensive Back Mondo Williams. But, to leave anyone out on the defense after that performance would be a great injustice.
On the Offensive side of the ball, the entire Offensive Line deserves credit. Quarterback Taylor Lamb played his heart out as did Running Back Marcus Cox who ran through the mostly former 4 star recruits for 115 yards rushing. Cox also caught a pass which he converted to a 34 yard Touchdown.
Tennessee Running Back Jalen Hurd did run for 110 yards and Quarterback Joshua Dobbs threw for 192 yards, but the Vols were mostly outplayed by the Mountaineers the entire game.
In Overtime, Dobbs fumbled the ball into the End Zone and thankfully for the Vols, Hurd fell on it giving Tennessee a Touchdown, the lead and eventually the win.
Tennessee survived a tough Appalachian State team and won 20-13.
My CFC Preseason Poll had Tennessee ranked 12th and that’s not likely to change because of this game. The Vols are better than they showed in this game.
But, they better get it going pretty quickly.
