Maybe we should have known what kind of weekend this would be by the upset on Thursday night of the AP Poll’s 2nd rated team, Oregon by the Arizona Wildcats.
I had the Ducks ranked at #5 and never got the reasoning behind placing them at #2. They did beat Michigan State but I wasn’t convinced.
Anu Solomon is not well known nationally and he is a bit undersized and not as fast as some dual threat Quarterbacks like the one he faced on Thursday night, Marcus Mariota. But, Anu Solomon knows what it takes to win and he may have learned that at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas where they win state nearly ever season. Consider me a fan of Solomon. Arizona also has one of the best Wide Receiver groups in the country and outside of Auburn.
I am not sure that so many teams in the top 15 or 20 in the nation have ever lost in one week before in the history of college football and it’s rankings.
Early season rankings are pretty meaningless and mostly just done for fun which is why I do it. Teams have to take care of business and get it done on the field during the season and then the ending rankings are huge and especially now with the new playoff system.
Alabama had just taken over the top spot on my own rankings this past weekend only to be beaten in it’s first weekend at #1.
The Alabama Crimson Tide went into the state of Mississippi and took on Ole Miss. Of course, the Crimson Tide has dominated the Ole Miss Rebels mostly during the entire time they have played each other. Dominated as to the tune of a 51-9-2 all time record against the Rebels.
Nobody picked the Ole Miss Rebels to win this game. The experts asked which Ole Miss
Quarterback Bo Wallace would show up, the Good Bo Wallace or the Bad Bo Wallace and to be perfectly honest, they had a valid point. Wallace could be very good or he could be very bad and throw plenty of interceptions.
Well, the Good Bo Wallace showed up on Saturday against Alabama and the Ole Miss Rebels upset the mighty Crimson Tide, 23-17.
Wallace was 18 out of 31 passes for 251 yards and 3 Touchdowns with 0 interceptions. That’s right, I said no interceptions.
Great day for the Rebels and their Land Shark Defense. This will be the third time I have posted this in my blog, but I love Alabama and Auburn and all of the other SEC teams, but I am pulling for Ole Miss to win the SEC. If not the Ole Miss Rebels, then their in-state rivals, Mississippi State. It would just be new and interesting to have somebody different winning it all.
The Ole Miss Land Shark Defense is outstanding and maybe tops in the country. They have done better than anyone against Amari Cooper of Alabama holding him to 9 catches for 91 yards and no Touchdowns.
Of all the ‘experts’ Pop Star Katy Perry was the only one that picked Ole Miss and she knows little about actual football. Maybe that helps?
Dak Prescott might be the best player in the country right now. He is playing lights out and the Mississippi State Bulldogs administered a sound beating to the Texas A%M Aggies in Starkville. Texas A%M’s Quarterback Kenny Hill threw 3 interceptions and all to Miss State Linebacker Richie Brown. Last week, the Bulldogs gave LSU a beating and this week they beat the Aggies.
Prescott is making a major push for the Heisman Trophy with 19 out of 25 completions for 259 yards and 2 Touchdowns. Prescott also rushed for 77 yards and 3 Touchdowns.
The Miss State defense is matching up well with the Ole Miss defense and they are going by ‘Psycho Defense’.
Both Ole Miss and Mississippi State are undefeated and this could be the best Egg Bowl in the history of that game coming up at November 29th.
The Bulldogs won 48-31 but the Aggies scored late and it wasn’t even that close, kind of like the LSU game. Maybe the Bulldogs need to learn how to finish games.
Kenny Hill, despite his interceptions, was still effective for much of the game and threw for 365 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Auburn crushed LSU 41-7. I have Auburn ranked #2 and I feel they are deserving of that high of a ranking. Their offense is impressive and their defense is much improved.
Nick Marshall was 14 out of 22 for 207 yards and 2 Touchdowns. He ran for 119 yards and 2 more Touchdowns in typical Nick Marshall fashion. Super talented Wide Receiver Sammie Coates finally got some touches with 4 receptions for 144 yards and 1 Touchdown. One of their other top Receivers is Duke Williams and he only had 2 catches for 28 yards.
LSU is finding out how difficult it is to have an inexperienced youthful Quarterback and I feel for them.
In other SEC action, the Kentucky Wildcats continued to show that they are now a force to be reckoned with as they beat the South Carolina Gamecocks at home, 45-38.
Kentucky improved to 4-1 and South Carolina dropped to 3-3. Kentucky Quarterback Patrick Towles continued to impress but the main thing is that Jojo Kemp ran for 131 yards with 3 Touchdowns and the Wildcats ran for 239 yards total with 4 Touchdowns on the ground.
Florida continued its domination of Tennessee with it’s 10th straight win over them. Not an impressive victory for the Gators with a 10-9 win.
4-1 Georgia beat up on 1-5 Vanderbilt in a workmanlike victory, 44-17. Todd Gurley continued his conquest of the player of the year award with 163 yards on 25 carries and 2 Touchdowns.
To the North, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish outlasted the Stanford Cardinal with a cold and rainy 17-14 win. Not a good day for passing but Notre Dame Quarterback Everett Golson did his best with 241 yards passing. The nation if filled with outstanding Wide Receivers, but Notre Dame’s William Fuller is right up there with the best of them. He did not have a big day yesterday with only 3 catches for 27 yards. This day was more suited for inside running games and the Irish held Stanford in check most of the day only allowing 47 yards on the ground.
Ranked Wisconsin lost for the second time and this time to suddenly smoking hot Northwestern, 20-14. Northwestern’s Godwin Igwebuike a redshirt freshman from Pickerton, Ohio picked off 3 Wisconsin passes, but the Badgers’ Melvin Gordon ran for 259 yards on 27 carries and a Touchdown. Gordon is in the Heisman mix with 871 yards and 9 Touchdowns off of 105 carries.
TCU shocked everybody by knocking off #4 Oklahoma in Fort Worth, 37-33. TCU Quarterback Trevone Boykins threw for 318 yards to lead the Horn Frogs over the Sooners.
Out West, the Utah State Aggies beat the #22 BYU Cougars. Heisman candidate Taysom Hill went down with a broken leg and the Cougars lost 35-20. Even with Taysom Hill at Quarterback, the Cougars could not stop Utah State backup Quarterback Darell Garretson who was 19 out of 25 for 321 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Who knows, maybe BYU’s defense let down after the loss of Hill. Linebacker Nick Vigil did his best Myles Jack impersonation and rushed for 57 yards in short yardage situations and a Touchdown.
On Saturday night, USC lost on a Hail Mary pass from backup Arizona State Quarterback Mike Bercovici to Jaelen Strong with no time remaining on the clock. USC players, coaches and fans were more than a little bit stunned. Bercovici threw for 510 yards and 5 Touchdowns on 27 out of 45 passes. Jaelen Strong, a junior out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the very best Wide Receivers in the country and caught 10 passes for 202 yards and 3 Touchdowns.
The Hail Mary erased a fine 143 yard rushing performance by USC Running Back Buck Allen. USC dropped to 3-2 and Arizona State improved to 4-1.
In the revenge is overrated category, the Sun Devils beat the stuffing out of USC in 2013 causing the Trojans to fire Lane Kiffin immediately and replacing him with Ed Orgeron temporarily. This was a heartbreaking loss for the Trojans, but they are young and will get over it.
Across town, the UCLA Bruins lost in the last seconds to Utah, 30-28. The Bruins have been playing to close all season long other than the Arizona State game when they blew out the Sun Devils. The Utes surprised the Stanford Cardinal last season and upset the Bruins this season. Utah improved to 4-1 and should be ranked while the Bruins dropped to 4-1.
Only one more undefeated team in the Pac 12, Arizona.
Devontae Booker ran for 156 yards for the Utes and Paul Perkins ran for 99 yards for the losing team while continuing an outstanding season.
This past weekend may have been the craziest weekend ever in the world of college football. Any time 8 out of the top 15 or 20 teams goes down over a weekend, things are a little nuts.
