Isn’t it about time for the AP Poll to consider that Michigan State might be overrated? This past weekend, the AP’s 2nd ranked Michigan State Spartans barely squeaked by the horrible Purdue Boilermakers. In 2013, the Spartans had one of the very best defenses in the nation, and this year’s version is ranked 65th and they have only played one decent football team all season. They are giving up yard after yard against Western Michigan, Oregon, Air Force, Central Michigan and Purdue. They achieved their 2nd ranking due to their win over Oregon, but that is pretty fishy at this point. The Ducks were overrated from the beginning which was proven on the field by their 20-62 beating on their own home turf by the Utah Utes.
I’m a huge fan of the Michigan State Spartans, but they are definitely not the second best team in the country right now. They are not playing that well on either side of the ball and they are just not dominating teams they should be handling easily.
Ohio State is still the top ranked team in the country. But, they have not really put together a good game all season long offensively. Their defense has held them in every game, so far, but Indiana gave them all that they wanted this past weekend. Indiana is a lot better than most people give them credit for, but a top ranked team shouldn’t have to battle that hard with the Hoosiers.
I’m not sure that Cardale Jones is the right option at Quarterback for them, but that’s Urban Meyer’s choice and not mine.
Their defense is 14th ranked in the country which is why they still occupy the top spot. But, their offense needs to get it going before Michigan State and Michigan.
I hate to be one of those guys that says he hates to tell you so, but I told you it was premature to put the Alabama program out to pasture. Actually, I’m not going to lie. I really enjoy being correct.
This past weekend, the Alabama Crimson Tide traveled to rain soaked Athens, Georgia and just dominated the Georgia Bulldogs. The 38-10 final score was not really indicative of the difference between the two teams. Alabama is still just loaded, and Jacob Coker is much better than internet Alabama fans like to admit. Alabama lost in a game against Ole Miss that had more luck involved
than a Las Vegas craps table.
Alabama has a tough road ahead of them with Arkansas, Texas A%M, Tennessee, LSU, Mississippi State and Auburn. Even though some of those teams are struggling right now, they will bring their best game for the most hated team in the SEC. After Ole Miss got crushed by Florida, I would say that Alabama still has a shot at the SEC Championship. They have a very good shot at winning yet another SEC Title.
I will be interested to see if any of the national ‘experts’ like Stewart Mandel and Clay Travis will eat any crow and admit their mistake. Of course, Clay Travis is a Tennessee Volunteer homer and will never admit that he was wrong about Alabama.
Is there still any doubt about Jim Harbaugh being a good coach? This next weekend, the Wolverines host the undefeated Northwestern Wildcats. Michigan had a good defense under Brady Hoke, and they still have a good defense. But, their offense that was so very pathetic under coach Hoke is working and Harbaugh is establishing that power run game like he had at Stanford. Michigan will run De’Veon Smith, 5-10, 230, at an opponent, then trade him out with 6-3, 240 USC transfer Ty Isaac. Then, they will trade those guys out with speedier Drake Johnson and then back with powerful 5-11, 235 Derrick Green.
Harbaugh is still working with Brady Hoke’s talent and getting way more out of them. Just wait until he has a couple of recruiting classes under his belt and then maybe Colin Cowherd can learn how to interview the best football coach in the land.
This weekend Northwestern with their 5th ranked defense visits Ann Arbor to take on their 2nd ranked defense. This game could be one of the more fun games this weekend for fans of good, old fashioned, hard nosed defense.
Michigan could lose this game, but get your blows in now. Michigan is going to be a powerhouse under Jim Harbaugh like we have never seen before.
After week one, I wrote about how disappointed I was with this year’s Stanford team. They lost to Northwestern when they were heavily favored.
But, since they lost that game, they have bounced back strong. Maybe we were all expecting a bit much out of them, because they lost almost their entire defense from last season, returning only Blake Martinez and Kevin Anderson.
But, now, they are playing the way they were expected and many had named them the favorite to win the Pac 12 North.
Kevin Hogan struggled in game one, too. But, since then, he has looked like the fifth year senior that he is. Stanford beat USC, Oregon State and now Arizona in impressive Cardinal fashion with the power run game and sound defense.

They are a team that this crazy, hardcore football fan loves to watch.
The Florida Gators, man, what a difference a coaching change made. Jim McElwain has the Gators undefeated after 5 games and they just hammered Ole Miss this past weekend.
He is doing this with mostly Will Muschamp’s players.
McElwain looks like he could be the next big name in the coaching world. He compiled a modest 22-16 coaching record in 3 seasons at Colorado State before being hired by Florida to take over it’s struggling program.
The only thing I have against him is he was supposedly a college roommate of loudmouth, blowhard Colin Cowherd.
But, other than that, he was much like Jim Harbaugh in that he took over a team with some talent and turned it around rather quickly.
Auburn, who saw this coming? I surely didn’t. I thought addition of Will Muschamp would turn their defense around and it still might. But, they have struggled all year on both sides of the ball.
Auburn is 3-2 but it’s not looking good at all for a team that was in the top 10 at the start of the season.
Auburn was as high as number 6 on some Polls, but we were all wrong. Mostly, we were all wrong about their Quarterbacking situation. The back up from last season was touted as a Heisman candidate by some but that lasted about one or two games.
Their defense also made Leonard Fournette the front runner for the Heisman Trophy.
Arkansas and Tennessee were both media darlings as the season began. Arkansas was thought by some to be one of the better teams in the country. Tennessee finished the 2014 strong and some thought they would win the SEC East. Arkansas just beat Tennessee to improve it’s record to 2-3. Tennessee, while still young, can’t seem to win the close ones and is struggling at 2-3, also. The Vols only wins were against a MAC team and a Junior High team called Western Carolina. If not for our SEC teams, I am not sure I would have ever heard of Western Carolina.
After 5 games, these two would have to be the biggest disappointments of the year so far.
One more thing, Nate Peterman was just awful as a Tennessee Quarterback. He graduated and transferred to Pittsburgh and actually won the starting job and hasn’t looked that bad for a 3-1 team. Tennessee has recruited lights out, but sometimes you have to wonder.
UCLA is going to always lose one they shouldn’t with Jim Mora as coach. Let’s just get that out of the way right now.
Some people had USC as a playoff team in the preseason, and some others had UCLA as a favorite to make the playoffs. USC crushed Arizona State last weekend, and the Sun Devils traveled to the Rose Bowl and upset the highly favored Bruins of UCLA.
Personally, I was looking forward to a 1967 type game between the two schools located in Southern California. As it is, we could still get both of them in with only one loss apiece. Unless either of them blows yet another game.
The way I saw it, the Trojans of USC had the best shot at representing the Pac 12 in the Playoffs. Now, some of the experts are saying Utah is one of their four teams. But, Utah will have to beat an undefeated California, Arizona State, USC, and UCLA.
In defense of UCLA and head coach Jim Mora, they do have a true freshman Quarterback and some severe injuries to deal with. But, last season the same thing happened with supposedly one of the top Quarterbacks in the nation. Mora and his staff have really recruited well, but that star is going to fade fast if they keep losing to underdogs.
Biggest surprise teams for the good side are Florida, Toledo, Memphis, Northwestern, Iowa and maybe Utah.
