Could the U Be Back?

The Miami Hurricane football program won it’s first National Championship in 1983 when they upset the highly favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The Huskers scored late to pull within 1 point of the Hurricanes 30 to 31. They went for 2 points instead of the tie and it failed giving the Canes the championship.

Howard Schnellenberger gets credit and rightfully so. But, some credit should go to previous coach

Lou Saban who actually recruited the likes of Jim Kelly and another Quarterback named Mark Richt. These guys laid the groundwork for the guys that followed and made the Miami Hurricanes a force to be reckoned with in the 1980s and beyond.

Saban and Schnellenberger planned on keeping as much of the elite talent of Southern Florida home while cherry picking the nation for additional talent. It eventually worked for 5 national championships and they were close on many others.

The Miami Hurricanes became widely known as just the ‘U’.

The Canes last championship came in the 2001 season. They lost in Double Overtime the following season to the Buckeyes of Ohio State. But, then they started to slowly unravel.

Head coach Larry Coker won the title in 2001, but his teams started to fall apart. He was replaced by former Hurricane player Randy Shannon in 2007 who promptly went 5-7.

After a few seasons of mediocrity, Shannon was replaced by Al Golden.

Golden recruited pretty well and accumulated a little talent, but they never quite did anything on the field.

This past season, after getting absolutely drilled by Clemson 58-0, Al Golden was fired.

Luckily for the Hurricanes, the Georgia Bulldogs had grown tired of Mark Richt.

Now, the former Hurricane Quarterback is home again and ready to lead Miami back into the national picture.
Working for Mark Richt and his staff’s  advantage is the return of junior Quarterback Brad Kaaya.

The junior from California will be in his third year as a starter with over 6,000 passing yards and 42 Touchdown passes.

Kaaya did lose 2 out of his top 3 receivers, but they have plenty of talent returning. Plus, the addition of 4 outstanding high school receivers led by Sam Bruce of Ft. Lauderdale.

At Running Back, the Canes return outstanding backs Joseph Yearby and Mark Walton.

The biggest plus of all is the return of every starter up front in their Offensive Line.
They also return boat loads of talented Tight Ends which is a position that the Hurricanes have been known for and Mark Richt loved to use at Georgia.

On the other side of the ball, the Hurricanes only return 6, but there is some talent in place. In spite of losses, they do return 6 out of their top 7 tacklers.

Not only do they return a lot of players from last season, the Hurricanes also recruited really well.

Mark Richt had some great recruiting classes at Georgia and he and his staff should do well at Miami.

The defense added such 4 star standouts as Linebackers Shaquille Quarterman and Zachery McCloud. At Defensive End, they added Patrick Bethel and Joseph Jackson. Then, at Safety they landed Romeo Finley and Cedric Wright. These are all Florida high school kids that can play at an extremely high level.

Brad Kaaya should announce after next season that he is leaving for the NFL, but the Hurricanes added outstanding Quarterback recruit Jack Allison with this past class. The 6-5, 200 Allison is one of the very best Quarterbacks in the country.

Could the ‘U’ be back?

Probably so.

I think they will be competitive this year and they should possibly be back in the title picture soon.
