Bosa vs Bosa

It’s almost impossible for a little brother to not be compared at an older brother. But, when you are both really outstanding football players it’s going to be even worse.

Living up to the legend of Joey Bosa must have been a monumental task while growing up for Nick Bosa.

Can you imagine?

While Joey Bosa was a junior at Ohio State, people in South Florida began saying that little brother Nick might just be better.

But, is Nick Bosa really better than his super star older brother, Joey?

Coming out of high school, Joey was a 4 star Defensive End recruit out of talent rich Ft Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

The Bosa boys are the sons of John Bosa who was a 1st round draft pick out of Boston College. But, their mother graduated from Ohio State University as well as their uncle Eric Kumerow. I wrote Mob Boss

about the family here:

Obviously, when the smoke cleared with the 2013 recruiting class, Joey Bosa had signed with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Young Joey Bosa started from day one during the 2013 season. He was listed as 6-6, 275 and he finished hte season with 44 total tackles with 13 and a 1/2 tackles for loss and 7 and a 1/2 Quarterback sacks. He also hurried the opposing Quarterbacks 6 times while knocking down another pass. Good freshman season, but he would get better his sophomore year and finish with 21 tackles for loss and 13 and a 1/2 Quarterback sacks. Maybe his best stat in the 2014 season was 4 fumbles forced.

Joey Bosa was a terror for opposing Quarterbacks and they always had to be aware of his presence.

Bosa is now wrecking havoc in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers. His father, John, was called a draft bust, but it’s already clear that Joey will not be.

The Ohio State Buckeyes won the very first ever college football playoff by beating Alabama and then Oregon back in the 2014 season.

Now, the Buckeyes are back in the playoffs again with younger Bosa brother, Nick, still with a chance to play two more games and increase his numbers for his true freshman season.

Nick Bosa also attended St Thomas Aquinas High School, but instead of a 4 star ranking, he was awarded a 5th star.

I never got to see any of Joey’s games, but I did see Nick. He did injure his knee and had to miss a lot of the season. But, I got to see Nick in a game that he was able to play.

Ft Lauderdale’s St Thomas Aquinas was taking on a really good team out of Miami. On the first play on defense for Aquinas, they had Nick Bosa lined up at Nose Guard. He picked the 300 pound Center up and drove him back into his own Quarterback knocking him down and setting up a 2nd down and long. Needless to say, I was super impressed with the display of strength and athleticism made by a high school senior. Not a lot of guys could have made that play and looked so impressive doing so.

Nick is somewhat smaller than Joey. He came into Ohio State and they listed him at 6-4, 265. Something of a problem for making comparisons between the two is that Ohio State is just better than they were in 2013 along the Defensive Line.

Their leading sack man from 2015 was actually the other Defensive End Tyquan Lewis who is super quick coming off the edge at 6-4, 270. He was back in 2016 for his junior season. But, there was also super sophomore Sam Hubbard returning after impressing as a redshirt freshman in 2015. Lewis,

Hubbard and Bosa all played extensively at Defensive End in 2016.

With at least one game remaining, Nick has 25 total tackles with 7 tackles for loss. He also has 5 Quarterback sacks and 3 Quarterback hurries.

Since Joey moved on to the NFL and plays for the Chargers, Nick took over his number 97 uniform. They look so much alike in the same number and it’s almost uncanny. With the helmet off, they look like brothers but not as identical as they do in full uniform.

So, which brother is the best?

Joey is slightly bigger and he had a better freshman season, but because of outside factors it is still too close to call.

I’m betting that they are both playing, and starting, in the NFL in a few years and terrorizing Quarterbacks.

As a fella that played a little Defensive End back in my pitiful football playing days, I couldn’t be prouder of them.
