Players of the Week October 18th

Another week has come and gone and these seasons go by too quickly so enjoy every moment of it before it’s the off season again. This past weekend featured an outstanding game which went down to the wire between Florida State and Notre Dame. I wish these schools would play every season, because that was fun.

The rest of the weekend was a bit of a letdown mostly, but there were still some good performances that need to be recognized.

Cody Kessler – USC. All of the outstanding Quarterbacks in the history of the USC Trojans like Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Rodney Peete, Pat Haden, Paul McDonald, John David Booty, and Mark Sanchez and none of them threw for 7 Touchdowns in one game. Current USC starting Quarterback Cody Kessler just threw 7 Touchdown passes in a 56-28 Trojan victory over Pac 12 opponent Colorado. Kessler completed 19 out of 26 passes for 319 yards.

Kessler has quietly become a really solid Quarterback for the Trojans with 4,861 career passing yards so far and climbing. He has 18 Touchdowns on the year, obviously helped out a great deal by last night’s 7 Touchdown passes.

If Kessler sticks around, the Trojans could be a pretty good team next season. At 6-1, 210, Kessler is an excellent college Quarterback, but lacks the ideal size

Terrence Magee- LSU.  LSU is almost always loaded at Running Back and this year is no different. Most of the attention has gone to true freshman superstar, Leonard Fournette. Almost forgotten this season are big Running backs Terrence Magee and Kenny Hilliard. Hilliard is 6-0, 235 and Magee is 5-9, 220 and both are seniors. Both of these guys are extremely talented and I can almost guarantee that NFL scouts have not forgotten about either of them. LSU loves their big Running Backs. Fournette is 230 and fellow true freshman Darrel Williams is 6-0, 230. The Tigers have commitments for next year from high school seniors Nick Brossette who is 6-0, 215, and Derrius Guice at 5-11, 215 and David Ducre at 6-0, 220.

The Tigers love to pound the football. On Saturday, the Tigers were in a battle with Kentucky and the Wildcats had held Leonard Fournette in check all night. Senior Terrence Magee came in and gave the Tigers a spark with 129 yards rushing on 9 carries and 2 Touchdowns. 129 yards in itself is not all that impressive, but on 9 carries that is obviously 14.1 yards per carry.

Nick Chubb- Georgia.  Todd Gurley who? Georgia has actually played a lot better the two last games since Gurley has been suspended. True freshman Nick Chubb and sophomore Brendan Douglas have filled in admirably for Gurley. I’m not saying that either back is as good as Gurley, but they have played well as have their teammates.

Nick Chubb carried the ball 30 times Saturday in Fayetteville, Arkansas for 202 rushing yards and 2 Touchdowns.

The Bulldog defense has been playing sensationally the last few weeks, and Hutson Mason and Nick Chubb have taken the offense on their backs and carried the Dogs through difficult times. Georgia is still in the running for the SEC East Title even without Todd Gurley.

The entire Alabama defense.  Over the last few years, Alabama under Nick Saban has developed a reputation as a team that can’t stop the spread offenses, or any passing attacks. They silenced the critics this past Saturday when they routed Texas A%M, 59-0. The Aggies shocked the world in August when they went into Columbia, South Carolina and beat the Gamecocks 52-28. The Aggies were rolling along at 5-0 and then got bushwhacked by the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. Ole Miss beat them the week after, but nobody beat them anywhere close to what Alabama beat them.

The Alabama Crimson Tide defense held the high powered Aggie offense to no points, and 141 yards passing and 31 yards rushing. Holding the Aggie offense to 172 total yards is an amazing feat and a considerable shock considering the history between these 2 schools in recent years.

Alabama lost to Ole Miss 2 weeks back and is fighting it’s way back up the polls trying to get a playoff spot.

Marcus Murphy- Missouri. Missouri won the SEC East last season in a shocker, but this season they have been hit and miss all year long. Coming in, they had the top Wide Receiver in the country and then he was booted from the team. Their offense has not been as good as expected and losing Dorial Green-Beckham was brutal.

Marcus Murphy has been solid at Running Back for the Tigers all season. On Saturday in the Swamp, Marcus Murphy had 27 yards rushing on 8 carries. Now, before you start snickering and stop reading, Murphy had another impact on the game.

He returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a Touchdown. Murphy had a rushing Touchdown later in the first quarter making it 14-0.

Missouri had a 20-0 lead at half time and after Florida’s first attempted drive in the second half Marcus Murphy had an 82 yard punt return, making it 27-0.

A few minutes later, Missouri defensive standout Markus Golden had a 21 yard fumble return and then teammate Darvin Ruise had a 46 yard interception return making it 42-0.

Will Muschamp is so fired at Florida. The man is an excellent Defensive Coordinator.

Trevone Boykin – TCU. The Texas Christian University Horn Frogs have been one of the nations biggest surprises so far this season. Trevone Boykin has been a pleasant surprise at Quarterback as well. On Saturday against a pretty good Oklahoma State ball club, the junior Quarterback threw for 410 yards and 3 Touchdowns off of 26 out of 39 passing. Boykin led his Horny Toad teammates to a 42-9 blowout victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Boykin was formerly thought to be a running Quarterback, but has nearly 2000 yards passing on the year so far.

JT Barrett – Ohio State. Redshirt freshman Quarterback JT Barrett was forced into duty early in the season with the injury to Braxton Miller. He started off pretty roughly which was to be expected since he hadn’t played at all on the college level.

On Saturday, the Buckeyes took on the 5-1 Rutgers Scarlet Knights and just worked them completely over with a 56-17 win. Barrett completed 19 passes out of 31 attempts for 261 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Barrett didn’t stop there, he was also the leading rusher for the Buckeyes with 7 carries for 107 yards and 2 Touchdowns.

The Buckeyes still miss Braxton Miller, but Barrett has done really well as a starter.

Devontae Booker- Utah. Booker, a 5-10, 205 junior out of Sacramento, is one of the nation’s leading rushers. On Thursday night in Corvallis, Oregon, the Running Back for Utah ran for 229 yards on 32 carries and 3 Touchdowns. Booker hadn’t played before this season but has 742 yards on the year so far and 7 Touchdowns as the Utah Utes have become something of the surprise Pac 12 team of the year going 5-1. Their only loss was to Washington State in something of a shocker.

However, the Utes have tough games coming up to USC, Arizona State, Oregon, Stanford and Arizona so we will see how things end up for them.
