The Heisman Candidates Summer List Revisited 2018

Everything changes so fast in football. These were the guys on top of my Heisman list before the season started. After two games, it’s already changed.

1. Bryce Love – Stanford: Against San Diego State, Love was completely shut down with 29 yards rushing on 18 carries which may have removed Love from the Heisman list before the season even really got going. He rebounded somewhat against USC in game two with 136 yards rushing and a touchdown. Even so, the opening performance probably shut down his Heisman chances before it even really got rolling. More bad news for Love, he is out for the third game.

2. Jonathan Taylor – Wisconsin: in the Badgers’ opening game, Taylor had a modest 145 yard rushing night against Western Kentucky. But, he did score 2 touchdowns and he did average over 8 yards per carry. Against New Mexico in game two, Taylor ripped the defense for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns. After two games, Taylor has 2 yards short of 400 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns.

3. Tua Tagovailoa – Alabama: Tua might be the best player in the country, but still not in an ideal position to win a Heisman Trophy. The Crimson Tide is just so much better than the teams they are playing that many of the starters aren’t going to get much playing time. Tagovailoa has 6 touchdown passes and no picks at this point with 455 yards passing in 2 games. He only has 46 yards rushing and a single touchdown. Unless Alabama has some tougher games this season, it’s going to be really

tough for Tagovailoa to win the Heisman.

4. Khalil Tate – Arizona: Any thoughts of Tate winning the Heisman were dashed against BYU in game one and then further crushed against Houston in game 2. Supposedly, Tate has ankle issues which could be true since his run game has been shut down almost completely in his first two games. Against BYU, he ran for only 14 yards and in game one he was stuffed again, this time for only 8 yards. He has thrown for 538 yards, but right now he has more interceptions than touchdowns.

5. Jake Fromm – Georgia: Fromm was one of the new players I really liked last season and I love his arm. But, how long does he hold off super freshman Justin Fields? Georgia loves to run the football and they have several outstanding backs that want the ball. Fromm has thrown for only 351 yards and 3 touchdowns.

6. McKenzie Milton – UCF: All things being equal, Milton would be my favorite to bring home the trophy. But, it’s just not going to happen at Central Florida. The Knights have won their opening 2 games by a combined score of 94-17, which means not as much playing time for their stars. Milton has 589 passing yards and 6 touchdowns. But, he also has a surprising 3 picks, so far. The Knights have a new coach in 2018, but McKenzie Milton is still going to get it done.

7. Trace McSorley – Penn State: McSorley is a team leader and just a winner. He’s not overly big, or overly fast. He doesn’t even have a super arm,  but McSorley just wins. The Nittany Lions lost Saquon Barkley, but with running back Miles Sanders stepping up and the stars at the receiving positions, Penn State is looking good. In two games, McSorley has thrown the ball for 374 yards and 3 touchdowns and has 89 yards rushing and 3 more touchdowns.

8. AJ Brown – Ole Miss: A wide receiver in a power running back’s body, the 6-1, 230 Brown is dangerous with the ball in his hands. Ole Miss has been loaded at the receiver positions ins recent years and AJ Brown has been their best. In two games so far this season, Brown has 15 receptions for 251 yards averaging 16.73 yards per catch and 3 passes going for touchdowns. Brown leads his team in all receiving categories. It has helped that Ole Miss has two wins over teams without defenses in Texas Tech and Southern Illinois, but there’s no denying that AJ Brown is a beast at wide receiver.

9. Jarrett Stidham – Auburn: Former Stephenville, Texas and Baylor quarterback finally found his way to Auburn and helped the Tigers upset Alabama and win the SEC West. Stidham made a huge difference with the Tigers immediately. Continuing into 2018, Stidham helped Auburn get by a tough Washington Husky team in game one and stomping Alabama State in game two. Stidham has 382 passing yards and a  couple of touchdowns. LSU is next for Auburn, so it will be interesting to see how well Auburn does.

10. Cam Akers – Florida State: With the coaching change at Florida State, it’s apparent that the new coaching staff wants to spread the ball out more with Akers receiving 28 carries and Jacques Patrick getting 20 carries. In 2 games, Akers has 28 carries for 158 yards and 0 touchdowns. That’s 0 as in none. Granted, Florida State’s first game was against a tough defense in Virginia Tech. But, Akers actually had more rushing yardage against the Hokies than he did against Samford the following week.

11. AJ Dillon – Boston College: Dillon has seen the ball very little in two blow out wins over bad opponents. In a 55-21 win over UMass, Dillon ran the ball 20 times for 98 yards. But, last week, he only carried the ball 6 times, but gained 149 yards and scored 3 touchdowns. I don’t know if math is your favorite subject, but that’s over 24 yards per carry.

The Others:

Greg Dortch – Wake Forest: I love this kid and he should have been in the top 10. He’s a playmaker. So far this season, Dortch has 19 receptions for 243 yards and a score. Plus, 2 punt returns for touchdowns while averaging over 31 yards per return. He also returns kicks and it might be just a matter of time before he takes one the distance.

Rodney Anderson – OU: Out for the season.

Will Grier – West Virginia: I definitely should have had Grier on my list.

Shea Patterson – Michigan: Patterson has not been the savior that Michigan fans thought, but it’s been all of 2 games and fans tend to overreact.

Brian Lewerke – Michigan State: The Spartans are off to a rough start, but Lewerke has thrown for over 600 yards. If Mark Dantonio gets the ship back on course, look for Lewerke to move up list.

Benny Snell Jr – Kentucky: Wildcats could be surprise in SEC East this season and Snell is their leader. He’s run for 300 yards in the teams’ firs two games.

Nick Fitzgerald – Miss State; Suspended for the first game, Fitzgerald came back and passed for 154 yards and ran for 159 more which is incredible if you had seen his injury.

Drew Lock – Missouri: Lock is on fire right now throwing for 687 yards and 8 touchdowns with 0 interceptions.. If he remains hot and the Tigers play well, look for him to join the top 10.

Jake Bentley – South Carolina: The Gamecocks lost a big game to Georgia this past weekend which can’t help Bentley’s long shot odds.
