Occasionally an NFL game will have an exciting finish, but usually those are in the playoffs. I do enjoy the playoffs, but the problem is there are 16 regular season games that are almost meaningless. You can lose a few games along the way and still get in the playoffs.
That’s not the case in college football. Yes, there are a lot of mismatches when one of the top teams takes on a highly inferior opponent.
But, look at this past weekend in college football for a reason why college is much more exciting than the NFL.
Tennessee at Georgia: This game was a wild and crazy one. True freshman Georgia Quarterback Jacob Eason hit freshman Wide Receiver Riley Ridley with about 10 seconds left with a Touchdown pass to win the game, 31-28. Or, so we thought. Georgia Bulldog fans were going nuts. The Tennessee fans had their mouths open in shock. The officials threw a flag on a Georgia player for taking his helmet off on the field and the Bulldogs picked up a 15 yard penalty.
The Dogs had to kickoff to Tennessee from their own 20 yard line. But, there was only 10 seconds left on the clock. What bad things could happen with 10 seconds left?
Plenty, it appears.
Tennessee caught the ball and ran it to just past midfield. Georgia was penalized 5 yards for being
offsides, so the Volunteers of Tennessee had the ball on about the Georgia 43 yard line.
There was 4 seconds left and Georgia brought in some taller guys to play in the end zone. Vol Quarterback Josh Dobbs dropped back to pass and he threw the ball into the end zone. 6-3, 205 Wide Receiver Jauan Jennings out jumped everyone and somehow came down with the ball. AS the refs hands went up to say he scored, the stadium outlook completely changed. Most of the fans were Georgia fans since the game was played in Athens, Georgia. Now, it was their turn to have open mouths and be in a state of shock.
Tennessee Vol fans were jumping up and down and celebrating. The Vols have had two weeks in a row of great finishes for them beating their chief tormentor, the Florida Gators.
Exciting finishes seem to be a weekly occurrence in college football.
North Carolina at Florida State: Last week, North Carolina came roaring from behind to beat a good Pittsburgh team at home. This week, they were on the road visiting Tallahassee. The Tar Heels built up a 21-0 lead and the home crowd was booing at halftime. Wow, I am always against booing and boo birds.
But, Jimbo Fisher must have gotten onto his squad heavily at half time, because the Seminoles came fighting back. With about 30 seconds left in the game, Florida State Quarterback Deondre Francois ran the ball in for a score for the Seminoles to tie it up and then kicker Ricky Aguayo kicked the extra point to take a 35-34 lead over the Tar Heels.

Trubisky moved the ball to their own 48. Trubisky threw the ball to deep threat Wide Receiver Mack Hollins which fell incomplete. But, Hollins was knocked down by Florida State Cornerback Tarvarus McFadden and the refs called pass interference. The penalty, put North Carolina in place to try a Field Goal with 4 seconds to go. But, it was a 54 yard attempt and North Carolina kicker Nick Weiler had never hit on anything longer than 49 yards. But, he nailed this one to win the game, 37-35, for the Tar Heels. The hugely outnumbered visitors from North Carolina celebrated while the home crowd naturally were stunned. With 2 losses in conference play, the Seminoles are likely out of it, but they can still improve and play spoiler.
Giant difference again in the reactions after a wild finish between NFL and college football. NFL fans would have been happy, but nothing compares to the celebrations of college players and fans.

Louisville at Clemson: With the other great games already mentioned being so much fun, they may not have compared at all to this game at Clemson’s Death Valley. Forget about the Death Valley where half the fans will leave at half time to go party, these Clemson fans love football.
This game went in cycles, with Louisville looking unstoppable at first and then Clemson totally dominating the 2nd quarter to take a 28-10 lead into half time as the crowd went wild. The 3rd quarter was all Louisville as they came roaring back after Clemson turnovers. The 4th quarter was a fight to the finish with Clemson taking a turn at coming from behind to take a 42-36 lead. drove the ball to inside the Clemson 5 yard line when they turned the ball over on downs. Clemson took away a very hard fought battle between ACC Heavyweights. I haven’t seen a lot of in season games in the NFL that created a buzz like this one and people that were in attendance were fortunate to be a part of history.
There is a possibility that the top two vote receivers in the Heisman race come from this game with Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Winston.
Baylor at Iowa State: This is a case of lack of defense, but some fans dig it. I am more of a defensive guy. Everyone was sort of caught off guard by this game and if it had been in Waco it would have been a blowout. But, Iowa State showed a ton of heart before going down on a late Field Goal, 45-42.
Michigan State at Indiana: Michigan State built up a lead of 21-7 at one time before the Hoosiers fought back and tied the game up at 21 all and it went to Overtime. The Hoosiers have had a good offense in recent seasons, but this year they were bound and determined to play better defense and it appears that they have. They stopped Michigan State in Overtime and then kicked the Field Goal to win the game in a shocker, 24-21. The college Overtime system is far, far, far superior to the NFL’s. Over the years there has been so many great Overtime games in college football and I can’t remember too many thrillers in the No Fun League. Yet, the casual fan doesn’t even watch college ball preferring the Pros.

Utah at California: California found things a bit tougher facing Utah at home. One might have thought this game would be an offensive onslaught, but it didn’t turn out that way. Cal hung on to a 28-23 lead with time running out and Utah had the ball inside the Cal 10 yard line. Cal’s defense has never been confused with Alabama’s, but they stopped Utah on 7 attempts to get the win. Utah was trying to score when the clock ran out on them.
Oklahoma at TCU: Talk about bad defense, both Bob Stoops and TCU coach Gary Paterson are former Defensive Coordinators and are supposed to be experts in the field of stopping the opponents. But, little expertise in defense showed up in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday Night. This game was wild from start to finish.
Oklahoma was driving the ball late with a 49-46 lead and trying to put the game away for good. But, TCU stopped them and forced the Sooners to kick a Field Goal. With a 52-46 lead and 1:55 remaining in the game, the Horny Frogs from TCU had plenty of time left to stage some late drama.
TCU Quarterback Kenny Hill had 1:49 to get his team the win. But, a sudden rise in Oklahoma’s defense and a grounding call stopped the TCU come back before it really got going. It wasn’t the greatest finish of the day, but for fans of high scoring games, this one was for you.
Toledo at BYU: The Cougars of BYU won their opening game against Arizona by 2 points. Then, they lost 3 in a row to Utah, UCLA and West Virginia by 1, 3 and 3 points respectively. You would have to figure their next game would be a close one and it was. They beat Toledo from the MAC by 2 points, 55-53. Looks almost like a basketball score.
Minnesota at Penn State: The top level Big 10 teams from last year were Ohio State, Michigan
State and Michigan with schools like Penn State and Minnesota making up the next level. This game did not disappoint and Penn State needed Overtime to beat the Minnesota Gophers. Again, with Saquon Barkley scoring in Overtime to secure the win, it was more exciting of a finish than most any NFL game. Barkley was mostly held in check by a surprisingly good Gopher defense. Maybe they were tired of being called Gophers and just wanted to hit somebody.
Every week, there are games like these. Maybe not quite as many, but this is the essence of college football. People can have a great time watching the games and get as drunk as they want and have a day to recover before going back to work. Unlike the Sunday games were work is the next day. As far as I am concerned, college football is the greatest game known to man kind.
