In what has been one of the craziest college football season for college coaches, Georgia has added to the fire by firing long time head coach, Mark Richt.
Georgia ended their season on Saturday with a close win over rival Georgia Tech, 13-7. The Bulldogs finished 9-3 on the season with a 5-3 record in the SEC.
They were beaten badly in games against Alabama and Florida, but their loss to Tennessee could have gone either way.
I am not a big fan of firing a guy that took his team to a 9-3 record for many reasons.
But, I am not getting into any of that and if the Georgia Bulldogs wish to go a different direction then power to them. People can call it a ‘mutual decision’ all that they like but this was clearly another coach being pushed out at the very minimum.
There was talk that LSU was about to fire Les Miles, too, but apparently beating a not so good Texas A%M football team was enough to save his job.
Mark Richt is a Florida native and played his college football at Miami where he mostly backed up Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly.
Strangely, his first coaching job was as a Graduate Assistant at Florida State under their legendary longtime head coach, Bobby Bowden.
After working under Bowden for 4 seasons, Richt got his first real coaching job at East Carolina in 1989 when they named him Offensive Coordinator. But, after one season with East Carolina, Bobby Bowden hired him as his Wide Receivers coach.
Richt stayed at Florida State for a while after being promoted to Offensive Coordinator in 1994.
Bobby Bowden and Florida State had some of their best teams while Mark Richt was their Offensive Coordinator.
The Georgia Bulldogs fired Jim Donnan after the 2000 season when he led the team to it’s second consecutive 8-4 season.

For it’s new coach, the Bulldogs hired Florida State Offensive Coordinator Mark Richt.
Richt, at Georgia, equaled Donnan’s 8-4 record in 2001.
But, during his second season, the Bulldogs went 13-1 and won the SEC Championship. That season was followed by 11-3 and 10-2 before winning another SEC title in 2005.
The only really bad season that Richt had at Georgia was in 2010 when they fell to 6-7.
In 2011, the Bulldogs improved on the previous year’s let down with a 10-4 record and then a 12-2 record.
2013 was the most unfortunate season for the Dogs, with many injuries and the Prayer at Jordan Hare incident and the Bulldogs should have had a much better season. But, they finished 8-5.
That was a temporary set back because the Bulldogs recovered and won 10 games in 2014.
This year, they lost their best player when Nick Chubb went down for the season and they finished the regular season with a 9-3 record.
Then, the Bulldogs fired Mark Richt.
Richt posted a 145-51 record while at Georgia. By all accounts, Mark Richt is one of the top characters around and the kind of person that college football needs.
Good luck hiring somebody that will do better.
This is just CRAZY!!!!! Richt will surely land on his feet, and the new program will be blessed to have him! This season has just been NUTS!!!!!
Georgia fans may be a bit delusional.
