2015 ESPN Recruiting Rankings

1. Byron Cowart – Seffner, Florida DE; Auburn: A complete bust at Auburn, Cowart finally transferred to Maryland where he started and had 3 sacks as a senior. He will still get a shot at the NFL, but he’s a long shot at best. Hopefully, he has taken advantage of the opportunity with his education and will graduate.

2. Terry Beckner Jr – East St Louis, Ill DT; Missouri: A 4 year starter at Missouri. Beckner was good, but not the dominating defensive tackle that he was projected to be. In spite of the let down, he was still a solid player and could have a nice NFL career. It’s a good draft for defensive linemen so he probably falls to middle, or late rounds, if he’s even drafted.

3. Trenton Thompson – Albany, Georgia DT; Georgia: Stay in school kids, Thompson was good his sophomore year at Georgia and played as a true freshman. His junior year was disappointing and he declared for the NFL and was not even drafted. He signed with the Browns where he was a practice squad member and now is in the new development league. He has a small chance of making it, but why take the chance?

4. Iman Marshall – Long Beach, California CB; USC: Marshall was a 4 year starter for the Trojans, but never really lived up to his 5 star billing. With the nickname ‘Biggie’ Marshall is a big cornerback which gives him a decent shot at making an NFL roster. He was better as a freshman and sophomore, but injuries hampered him as a junior and senior. He’s probably projected to go in maybe the 4th round or even 5th. But, the former Long Beach Poly star definitely has a good chance at

making it.

5. Martez Ivey – Apopka, Florida OT; Florida: Had some injury problems, but also a good player for the Gators when he was physically able. He has the versatility to play tackle, or guard, but might be better suited in the NFL for guard.

6. Daylon Mack – Gladewater, Texas DT: Texas A%M: Played for 4 seasons for the Aggies, but his only really good season was his senior year. Should make some team a good run stopping nose guard in the NFL. but not a great pass rusher and won’t be an every down lineman. But, with a quick first step and some size, he should be a mid round to late pick and be a solid player.

7. George Campbell – Tarpon Springs, Florida WR; FSU: Major bust for the Seminoles. He impressed in his first spring as a true freshman early enrollee, but never did much after that, catching 13 passes in 3 seasons He just transferred to Penn State to finish up his college eligibility. Campbell is still a big player at about 6-4, 215 and does have some ability, so maybe he needed a change of scenery.

8. Derwin James – Haines City, Florida DB; FSU: Possibly the best player in this class. Like Campbell, he impressed by picking off the first pass thrown in the Seminole Spring game and returning it for a touchdown. James started every year, but missed most of his sophomore season with an injury. James was drafted with the 17th pick of the 1st round by the Los Angeles Chargers where he was an All Pro as a rookie. They definitely hit it out of the park with the Derwin James ranking and maybe he should have been rated number 1.

9. CeCe Jefferson – Glen St Mary, Florida DE – Florida: Showed promise early on, but injuries mostly held him back. He was inconsistent on the field, but had some good moments. He’s a little undersized for a defensive linemen at about 6-1, 245, which makes me question his initial ranking. But, he could possibly play a linebacker position in the NFL if some team would have the patience and the room for him. Or, maybe he would surprise and be a standout.

10. Kevin Toliver – Jacksonville, Florida CB – LSU: Did I mention for kids to stay in school yet? Toliver was a 3 year starter at LSU, mostly, but declared early and was not drafted. However, it did

happen to end well for Toliver as he signed with the Chicago Bears and did pretty well. At LSU, Toliver played well as a freshman and then missed much of his sophomore season because of injuries. He bounced back his junior season and I was actually surprised he wasn’t picked because he is about 6-2, or 6-3, and about 205.

11. Josh Sweat – Chesapeake, Virginia DE – FSU: Sweat injured his knee in high school which slowed him during his time at Florida State, early on. But, he had a really good sophomore year and an average junior year before declaring for the NFL. He was picked in the 4th round and is playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and actually has a Super Bowl championship under his belt, even though he was on the injured reserve.

12. Kendall Sheffield – Missouri City, Texas CB – Alabama: bombed at Alabama and transferred to a Junior College before re-signing with Ohio State. He was a good corner for the Buckeyes and is one of their faster players so he should be drafted this season.

13. Kyler Murray – Allen, Texas QB; Texas A%M: Most recent Heisman Trophy winner at Oklahoma which you would know unless you live under a rock. Murray transferred from A&M after his freshman year and sat out a year. Then, he waited for Baker Mayfield to be done. Murray was a 1st round pick by the Oakland A’s, but recently decided to do football. He’s really small, but teams are always wanting a QB that can make things happen and Murray makes things happen.

Blake Barnett – Corona, California QB; Alabama: Complete wash out. After redshirting, he was beaten out by Jalen Hurts who was beaten out by Tua Tagovailoa. Barnett transferred a JC, then to Arizona State where he was beaten out by the incumbent. He transferred again and this time to South Florida where he earned the starting job, finally. I never felt he deserved the rankings and it was all because of who he committed and signed with.

15. Canton Kaumatule – Honolulu, Hawaii DE; Oregon: Played briefly early on, but injuries caused Kaumatule to take a medical redshirt. However, he decided to transfer to Central Florida in 2017. He was on their roster for the 2017 season, but I have no clue where he is now.

16. Torrance Gibson – Plantation, Florida Ath: Ohio State: Apparently, a head case, Gibson stayed at Ohio State long enough to make the fans drool over his potential. Then, he transferred and was at Mississippi Gulf Coast JC, but now has signed with a Canadian Football League team.

17. Justin Hilliard – Cincinnati, Ohio LB; Ohio State: Mostly a back up and special teams player for the Buckeyes. You could label Hilliard a major bust if you enjoy doing that sort of thing.

18. Mitch Hyatt – Suwanee, Georgia OT; Clemson: Another one of the best players on this list, Hyatt has been a 4 year starter at left tackle for the Tigers. As a guy that’s kept a close watch on Hyatt, I’d say he had a bit of a slump as a junior, but was back this  past season with a vengeance.

Hyatt has gone up against the best of the best and has held his own the majority of the time. He should be a highly drafted tackle this year. This kid has always been good. As a young sophomore in high school, he roughed up highly decorated and everybody’s top guy, Robert Nkemdiche. Hyatt should make a solid NFL tackle for years.

19. Tim Settle – Manasses, Va DT; Virginia Tech: Redshirted his freshman season, Settle played some as a redshirt freshman. As a sophomore, he was pretty good and made 2nd team All ACC. But, he decided to forgo his last 2 seasons and entered the NFL draft where he was picked in the 5th round by the Washington Redskins. He played some as a rookie, but not a lot.

20. Kerryon Johnson – Madison, Alabama RB; Auburn: Johnson rushed for nearly 1,400 yards as a junior in 2017 and then declared for the NFL. He was a 2nd round draft pick by the Detroit Lions and he had a decent rookie season running for about 640 yards and catching 32 passes. He should have a bright future ahead of him if he can stay in the league long enough.

21. Chuma Edoga – Powder Springs, Georgia OT; USC: Stayed at USC for 4 years, but only started a portion of his college career. Still, with good coaching, he has a shot at an NFL career. Would consider him mostly a bust, but wonder how much is on him, or a lousy coaching staff at USC in current times.

22. Keisean Lucier-South – Orange, California DE; UCLA: Still at UCLA, Lucier-South has been a linebacker on some bad teams. He redshirted as a freshman and played very little his redshirt freshman season. As a sophomore, he started 8 games. This past season, he was a full time starter and led the team in tackles for loss. He returns to the team for his senior season in 2019.

23. Calvin Ridley – Coconut Creek, Florida WR; Alabama: More than living up to his billing, Ridley was a super star from his freshman season on. He was the Alabama leading receiver for 3 straight seasons, but his best season was his freshman year. Ridley declared for the NFL after his junior season and was a first round pick by the Atlanta Falcons and he was an outstanding rookie.

24. Arden Key – Lithonia, Georgia DE: LSU: Excellent player for the Tigers, but he never quite filled out as expected. He was pretty thin all the way through his LSU career. Key was basically a 3 year starter at LSU and set a school sack record as a sophomore with 12 quarterback sacks. Key was a 3rd round draft pick by the Oakland Raiders where he was pretty active as a rookie.

25. Deon Cain – Tampa, Florida WR; Clemson: Great player, but had some off field issues as a freshman and missed the playoffs. As a sophomore, Cain supplemented Mike Williams really well as a big play receiver. Then, as a junior Cain followed only Hunter Renfrow in team leader for receptions. Better quarterbacking in 2018 on national champion Clemson would have promoted Cain’s draft stock so he did make a mistake by coming out early. He was picked in the 6th round by Indianapolis and was heading for a big season when he tore his ACL in the preseason and was placed on injured reserve. If he had returned for his senior year, he probably would have gone really early in the draft which is a lot of money down the tubes.

9 out of the top 25 were from Florida in 2015. In the current 2020 top 25 with ESPN, there are 0 Floridians. I would also say 9 of these could be considered busts for their rankings. This is not on ESPN, this is on recruiting and how it’s not always an exact science.

But, when all is said and done, I’d rather have 4 and 5 stars than unranked, or 2 stars. It’s the Alabama and Clemson type schools that are signing the best players year in and year out that are playoff bound on a consistent basis.
