Pierce Holt Angelo State Bad Hombre

We used to call it country strong back in the day. Others just called it farm strong. Some young guys grew up on a farm, or on a ranch, and grew up working hard with his hands. They are big ole boys that can lift hay bales all day long and into the night. I did that when I was young and they are welcome to it, while I sit in the shade and drink lemonade.

Steve Emtman from outside of Spokane, Washington who was an All American at Washington is a perfect example. Emtman was so incredibly strong that at times it appeared nobody could block him. Emtman was farm strong. Call it whatever you like, but Emtman was so good that the Indianapolis Colts drafted him with the very first pick in the 1992 NFL Draft. His NFL career didn’t play out as great as expected because of injuries, but he was an incredible player at Washington and for a while at Indianapolis.

Eastern Washington is very rural, and so are many parts of the state of Texas.

Growing up a country boy much similar to Emtman was Pierce Holt of Rosenberg, Texas.

Peirce Holt only played one year of high school ball and he was only about 180 pounds. Obviously, nobody recruited him to play at their schools.

Holt got married and kicked around from job to job. He was in the rodeo, he arm wrestled. He worked odd jobs and probably several at once.

Football, apparently, never left the mind of young Pierce Holt, but by then he was already 22 years of age. Eligibility issues would limit a 22 year old at a division one school, so if Holt really wanted to play he had to take a different path.

Holt was a late bloomer and had grown to about 6’4″ and about 280 pounds and he was that country strong that I wrote about above. He was a beast, and he clearly had a lot of ‘want to’ in his heart.

Pierce Holt attended Angelo State University, a division 2 school in San Angelo, Texas. Angelo State is a school of about 10,000 students and located in a city of about 100,000 people. In spite of the size, San Angelo and Angelo State still has that country vibe to it.

Pierce Holt fit in perfectly.

He was a beast.

It did help his cause that he was 22 years old when he started and 26 years old when he was done. But, he was easily good enough to make All American at the small college level. He was also an Academic All American which happens a lot when a guy works several years before going back to college.

I feel some similarities between Pierce Holt and myself other than I didn’t play football. The kids in college called me grandpa even though I was about 25 or 26. The other players at Angelo State supposedly called Holt, coach Holt.

I’ve read quotes from recruits saying they wanted to play in the SEC because that’s where you have to go if you want to make it to the NFL. Pierce Holt is just more living proof that if you are good

enough, the scouts will find you.

Playing at little known division 2 Angelo State, Pierce Holt’s name came up on draft day and he was selected in the 2nd round of the 1988 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. I can’t imagine a country kid living in San Francisco, but he live there he did.

With the 49ers, Holt was a star and made All Pro in 1992. The following season, Holt signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons, a 3 year deal worth 7.5 million dollars.

Country, or farm strong Pierce Holt had made it. He played 8 seasons in the NFL which wasn’t bad considering he was 26 years old when he started.

You don’t need to play in a certain conference to play at the next level, you can make it from just about anywhere.

But, it does help if you are 6-4, 280 and country strong.
