Leonard Fournette is Back

Leonard Fournette was expected to challenge for the Heisman Trophy again in 2016 after dropping out of the race in 2015.

In their opening game, the LSU Tigers were upset by the Wisconsin Badgers in Green Bay’s Lambeau Field. Fournette was not dominating, but he still managed to run for 138 yards on 6 yards per carry.

But, then, he was injured for game two against FCS power Jacksonville State and fortunately for the Tigers they have super sophomore Running Back Derrius Guice. Their second team guy is so talented

that he ran for 155 yards and a Touchdown while averaging 8.16 yards per carry. True Jacksonville State is not Alabama, but they are a good team and a challenge for SEC teams. The LSU Tigers prevailed in the game, 34-13.

Against SEC opponent Mississippi State, who sometimes seems to have the Tigers number, Fournette ran for 147 yards and a couple of Touchdowns. As usual, the LSU Tigers struggled against the Bulldogs before winning 23-20. The Bulldogs are just not very good this season.

Fournette followed that up with 101 yards rushing in a horrible performance against Auburn and LSU head coach Les Miles was fired right after the game. Whether you agree, or disagree with Miles being let go or not, their offense has gotten better after replacing Quarterback Brandon Harris with Purdue transfer Danny Etling and firing head coach Les Miles.

Miles is a great man and a great recruiter, but maybe it was time for Miles and LSU to part ways. He will land on his feet.

Leonard Fournette’s ankle was injured again and he had to sit out two games against Missouri and Southern Miss. But, Derrius Guice is a legitimate star and he ran for 163 yards against Missouri and 162 against Southern Miss with LSU winning big in both games. They muzzled Missouri, 42-7, and Stuffed

Southern Miss, 45-10.

Fournette came back this past weekend against Ole Miss.

On Saturday night, we all saw the Leonard Fournette we have all come to know. On only 16 carries, the powerful Fournette gained 284 yards and 3 Touchdowns. In case you don’t have a calculator handy, or you are a math whiz, that’s 17.75 yards per carry.

Fournette also had 3 receptions for 25 yards. His best play of the night may have been a short pass play to Fournette and he ran over an Ole Miss Defensive Back and just crushed the guy knocking him backwards.

Louisville’s Lamar Jackson has moved into the lead of the Heisman Race with an amazing early run. Deshaun Watson is still a valid candidate, but he needs to stop turning the ball over.

The 284 rushing yards may have put Leonard Fournette back in the Heisman race and in only 4 games, he now has 670 yards on the season and 5 Touchdowns.

The improvement of Purdue transfer Danny Etling in recent weeks may open doors for Fournette and other LSU Running Backs. He is behind other Running Backs in rushing yardage, but a couple of other near 300 yard rushing games would put him back with the national leaders.

The LSU Tigers improved to 5-2 on the season with a 3-1 record in the SEC. LSU still has it’s destiny in it’s own hands
