Big September Games in 2016

Saturday, September 3rd

Oklahoma vs Houston: Granted, schedules are made way in advance and when OU scheduled Houston, they were probably a really bad team. But, they aren’t any more. If OU beats Houston, then that probably eliminates UH from title picture. But, if UH does happen to beat OU, then watch out for the Houston Cougars and head coach Tom Herman.

UCLA vs Texas A%M: Is it time to give up on Jim Mora at UCLA? Winning this game could put the Bruins back in the national spotlight, but it’s not likely to happen. The Aggies need this win pretty badly, too, because they will have tough games coming up against Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss.

LSU vs Wisconsin: This game will be played at the Packers’ Lambeau Field. The last time these two teams played it was a defensive slug fest, but now the Tigers have stolen the Badgers’ Defensive

Coordinator Dave Aranda. The Tigers have playoff hopes and this is a must win for them.

Georgia vs North Carolina: This could be an interesting game because it’s the very first for Kirby Smart as a head coach. The Bulldogs will out talent the Tar Heels, but the Heels will be no pushover.

USC vs Alabama: The Trojans of USC have plenty of talent, but there’s just something about them that doesn’t add up. Alabama has even more talent. Both teams will have brand new Quarterbacks

Clemson at Auburn: An early season test for the top ranked Clemson Tigers. On paper, the Tigers of Auburn should not be able to hang with the Tigers of Clemson. But, as we all know, these games aren’t played on paper. With the game being played at Auburn, it could be close. Auburn is on it’s 3rd Defensive Coordinator in as many seasons which could be bad news.

Sunday, September 4th

Notre Dame at Texas: Notre Dame wiped out Texas last year in South Bend. This season could be different, but the Fighting Irish will still have way more experience and plenty of talent. Texas has recruited well, but most of their talent will be freshmen and sophomores.

Monday, September 5th:

Ole Miss vs Florida State: In recent seasons with so many teams playing weaker teams early in the season, this is a nice match up played on neutral ground. The Seminoles have so much returning experience, but the Rebels of Ole Miss have some good talent returning led by Quarterback Chad

Kelly.

Friday, September 9th

Louisville at Syracuse: Go ahead and laugh, but this will be our first chance to see Quarterback Lamar Jackson of Louisville and Dino Babers as the new coach at Syracuse. Jackson is fun to watch and Babers’ team at Bowling Green was fun to watch. It’s too early to get things turned around at Syracuse, but maybe they can hang in there for a while and make this game interesting.

Saturday, September 10th

Penn State at Pittsburgh: After taking about 15 years off with this rivalry, they are back again for the 2016 season. This could be a really good game with both of these teams returning a lot of players. James Conner should return for the Panthers, but the Nittany Lions return Saquon Barkley who may be the next big thing in college football.

Arkansas at TCU: Both of these schools have been playing really good football in recent seasons. Both also lost their long time Quarterbacks. This could be a great game in Fort Worth. Arkansas, in recent seasons, has been a late starting team with some ugly losses at the beginning of the year. They may have their hands full with the Horn Frogs.

North Carolina at Illinois: The Tar Heels have been an up and coming program with coach Larry Fedora. They spanked the Illini last year, but Illinois made a move in hiring former NFL coach Lovie Smith. I will be watching this game to see how both of these teams look, but I am really excited about the future with Lovie Smith on the job.

Tennessee vs Virginia Tech: This one is kind of a big deal and may break all time attendance records because they will play at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Vols need a win here, and the Hokies have a

brand new coach. This should be a Volunteer win because it might take some time to get the new systems in place.

Saturday September 17th

Florida State at Louisville: Another early season test for both of these programs. Florida State must have a win here, but a trip to Louisville can be an adventure. The Cardinals and their Quarterback Lamar Jackson can be a tough challenge for any defense.

Alabama at Ole Miss: Ole Miss has beaten Alabama for the past two seasons and that has never happened in recent times. Alabama wants to make sure it doesn’t happen again. But, who is going to Quarterback Alabama? The Tide may struggle early and that gives the Rebels a good shot at beating them again. Both teams need a win here, but if Bama wins expect another SEC championship for them. Aw, go ahead and expect it anyway.

Pittsburgh at Oklahoma State: The Panthers will either be high from a win over Penn State, or really low from a loss. Either way, a trip to Stillwater could be interesting. The Cowboys could be a dangerous foe for a lot of teams and the Panthers aren’t quite there yet.

Mississippi State at LSU: Early season SEC battle. LSU will be rated high and should be a heavy favorite and the Bulldogs must replace Dak Prescott.

Michigan State at Notre Dame: These two old rivals meet up again and it could be a fascinating game. Notre Dame should have a big edge due to returning experience. The Spartans must replace Connor Cook at Quarterback and a lot of other bodies. Notre Dame gets back a host of injured players in 2015 and they return 2 great Quarterbacks.

USC at Stanford: The Trojans could be reeling by this time after playing  Alabama in game one. The Trojans have about as much talent as any team in the country including Alabama, but there’s just something missing. Stanford has that ‘it’ factor with head coach David Shaw. They lost long time Quarterback Kevin Hogan, but his replacements are pretty talented. A lot of people thought that Christian McCaffrey should have taken the Heisman Trophy last season. He finished in 2nd place. but he broke Barry Sanders’ long standing All Purpose Yards record.

Ohio State at Oklahoma: This could be an elimination game for one of these programs. Oklahoma

could have the advantage with the game in Norman. Ohio State lost so many starters that they are basically starting over. Fortunately for them, the replacements are super talented. Nick Weber must play well at Running Back in place of departed Ezekiel Elliott. Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma starts his own Heisman campaign here. The Quarterback from Austin that nobody wanted has done really well for himself to say the least. Mayfield -Lake Travis

Thursday September 22nd:

Clemson at Georgia Tech: The last time the Clemson Tigers played here they were ambushed by a sneaky good Georgia Tech team. That probably doesn’t happen this time, but we had all better tune in and see for ourselves.

Friday September 23rd

USC at Utah: The Trojans stomped Utah in Los Angeles last season, but the tide could turn in Utah. The Trojans could come in with 2 losses and gain another in this game. It’s puzzling to see such a proud program with so many talented athletes going 8-6. Utah must replace their Quarterback, but keep an eye on Troy Williams, a former Washington Husky Quarterback.

Saturday September 24th

Florida at Tennessee: The Vols have been owned by the Gators for a while and this game has all the makings of a classic. Both of these teams should be improved in 2016. Vol fans hate Florida more than anybody.

Arkansas vs Texas A%M: These two go at it pretty hard. It’s usually a toss up and a hard fought battle. This game could go down to the wire and could be fun to watch.

Pittsburgh at North Carolina: This could be a great game between two hopeful challengers for the ACC crown. Both teams will need a win here to take control of the ACC Coastal.

Penn State at Michigan: This could be something of a Big 10 East elimination game. Michigan

should be a heavy favorite but this could be a great game. I still believe in James Franklin but he has a difficult schedule.

Wisconsin at Michigan State: Both schools will need to win this game to stay in the Big 10 title race. Each should have one loss coming in and can’t take another.

Georgia at Ole Miss: It will be interesting to see how Kirby Smart handles his Georgia Bulldog squad against a salty Ole Miss team. Also, who will be Quarterbacking the Bulldogs against Chad Kelly and his Rebels. There’s a chance that Ole Miss is undefeated, or has two losses.

September 29th Thursday:

Connecticut at Houston: UConn was the only team that beat Houston last year and it will be time for revenge. Houston might blow them out, but it could be an interesting game.

September 30th Friday:

Stanford at Washington: The Huskies have a good chance of winning the Pac 12 North and Stanford does as well. Sophomore Quarterback Jake Browning will lead the Huskies and junior Running Back Christian McCaffrey will do the same with the Cardinal. Could be a great game to watch.

This should be the most interesting September in several years.

October should be even better.
