Jeff Driskel or Florida?

In the 2011 recruiting class, the Florida Gators signed Jeff Driskel out of Ovieda, Florida. At 6-4, 225 with a good arm and excellent running ability, Driskel was rated the best Quarterback in the country. Florida was all too happy to keep him at home.

Driskel played some as a true freshman backing up disappointing senior Quarterback John Brantley and Jacoby Brissett. Driskel threw for 148 yards on 16 completions. He had no Touchdown passes, and two interceptions.

In the 2012 season, Jeff Driskel moved into the starters role ahead of Jacoby Brissett and he had a decent season with 1,646 yards passing and 12 Touchdowns. Driskel also ran for over 400 yards with his best game on the ground coming against Vanderbilt when he ran for 177 yards and 3 Touchdowns.

The Florida Gators finished the 2012 season with 11 wins and 2 losses. Quarterback Jeff Driskel and the Florida Gators head football coach Will Muschamp appeared on their way to greatness.

But, something happened along the way to Heisman Trophies and national championships, and it did not end well.

Driskel started off the 2013 season with a decent game against Toledo and led the Gators to a win, They lost their following game against bitter rival Miami, but Driskel had a good performance other than 2 Interceptions.

In their third game against another rival Tennessee, Driskel went down with a broken leg which cost him the rest of the 2013 season. The Gators started off with a 4-1 record, but fell apart and finished the season with a 4 win and 8 loss season.

Tyler Murphy and Skyler Mornhinweg both tried unsuccessfully to save the Gators season, but failed miserably. Murphy transferred to Boston College where he ran for over a thousand yards while passing for over 1,600 yards. Tyler Murphy was clearly not the problem with the 2013 Florida Gators.

Jeff Driskel returned in 2014 and looked great in the Spring Game and seemed like the solution to Florida’s 2013 problems.

But, things went South in a hurry for Driskel and the Gators. After playing well in the first two games against Eastern Michigan and Kentucky, the 2-0 Gators faced the Alabama Crimson Tide. Driskel was off the entire game and threw some Interceptions and the Tide rolled 42 to 21. Things got worse for Driskel frrom that point on even though the Gators beat Tennessee, he threw 3 Interceptions.

The Gator coaching staff stuck with Driskel in losses to LSU and to Missouri, but by then they had had enough and benched him in favor of true freshman Treon Harris.

Harris did not fare much better and the Gators finished the season 7-5 and head coach Will Muschamp was fired.

Jeff Driskel graduated from Florida and announced he was transferring to Louisiana Tech.

Driskel’s first game at Louisiana Tech was a huge 62 to 15 victory over Southern University. Driskel threw for 274 yards and 4 Touchdowns in a 12 completion out of 15 attempts performance. He also ran for 15 yards on 3 carries and scored another Touchdown.

It’s hard to tell a lot about the quality of a player going up against Southern. They do have one of the world’s great marching bands, but they aren’t known for producing great football teams.

On Thursday Night, September 10th, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs travel to Western Carolina.

Tune in on Thursday Night and judge for yourself if Jeff Driskel is a total bust, orĀ  if the problem was with the Florida coaching staff.

John Brantley was a huge disappointment at Florida after switching his commitment from Texas to

Florida. Jeff Driskel beat out Jacoby Brissett for the starting job in 2012, and Brissett transferred to North Carolina State where he did much better than Driskel after sitting out a season.

Tyler Murphy transferred to Boston College and did well in the 2014 season during his senior year.

Will that trend continue with Jeff Driskel?

The question remains, was it Jeff Driskel that flopped in Gainesville or Florida head coach Will Muschamp?

Phil Robertston ‘Duck Dynasty’

I like both of them and I hope they both do well at their next stops, but being a Florida Gator was not a great experience for either of them.

I’m not writing off Jeff Driskel and some good players have come out of Louisiana Tech over the years including Hall of Fame Quarterback and Pittsburgh Steelers hero Terry Bradshaw. Also, Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson was the Quarterback at Louisiana Tech before Bradshaw. I wrote about that here: Duck Dynasty

Jeff Driskel has one more college football season to prove his once number 1 ranking was actually legit.
