Big 12 Quarterbacks for 2016

Baylor: Seth Russell should be back for his senior season according to reports. He was having an outstanding season before injuring his neck severely in game 7.

True freshman Jarrett Stidham, who was rated as the 2nd best dual threat Quarterback in the 2015 recruiting class took over for Russell. When Stidham went down to injury, Wide Receiver Chris Johnson was forced into playing duty. Johnson was a former Quarterback that moved out to Wide Receiver. When Johnson was injured, the Bears were left with whoever they could plug in. Lynx Hawthorne played against Texas at Quarterback.

For the 2016 class, the Baylor Bears have Zach Smith coming in. Russell and Stidham should be back next season and the depth should be better. How much will Baylor coach Art Briles play Stidham with his senior Quarterback returning is the biggest question, I think.

Iowa State: The Cyclones fired their coach and brought in Matt Campbell from Toledo. Campbell is a good coach and his teams were 35-15 at Toledo. But, Iowa State is a tough place to win consistently.

Joel Lanning took over the Quarterback job during the season over senior Sam Richardson and

Lanning will be a junior in 2016.

Dominic DeLira was a 3 star Texan from Austin Lake Travis and he redshirted as a freshman.

Zeb Noland is an incoming freshman, but it remains to be seen if he is college ready.

Kansas: The Jayhawks were 0-12 in 2015, but at least it’s basketball season. Montell Cozart began the season as the starter, but freshman Ryan Willis took over as the season progressed. But, he threw more Interceptions than Touchdowns. Willis has potential, but he hasn’t a lot of talent around him. The Kansas Jawhawks might should bring back former coach Mark Mangino who took them to the Orange Bowl a few years ago. The program is pretty hapless right now. But, they do have a good basketball team every season and basketball is fun, too.

Kansas State: Joe Hubener was really the only Quarterback that played for the Wildcats last year and he will be a senior.  Zach Davidson backed up Hubener last year but only threw 1 pass last year. Jesse Ertz and Alex Delton also took snaps last year. Of the two, Delton may have the best chance of playing extensively any time soon.

Last year, the Wildcats brought in Junior College Jonathan Banks last year and apparently he

redshirted.

For next season, Kansas State has Skyler Thompson coming and he’s a 4 star from Independence, Missouri. I think Kansas State coach Bill Snyder sticks with Hubener because of his game experience.

Oklahoma: A playoff team last year and Quarterback Baker Mayfield was the key ingredient behind that success. Trevor Knight was the former starter and he has transferred. Which leaves Cody Thomas as the probable back up for 2016. Another prospect, Justice Hansen transferred also. But, the Sooners have Austin Kendall coming in this year from Waxhaw, North Carolina. Also, the Sooners have Aggie transfer Kyler Murray coming in and he was a 5 star recruit last year. He is listed at 5-11, 185, but he’s probably more like 5-9, 175. But, he’s a player. The Sooners should be in good shape for years to come at Quarterback. Mayfield has only one more season and then Murray should be stepping in if he can beat out Kendall and Thomas. Murray was a super star at Allen High School in Texas, but Kendall was really good in high school as well.

Oklahoma State: Mason Rudolph was a sophomore last year and he is a talent. Rudolph threw for 3,770 yards and 21 Touchdowns a year ago and he returns for his junior season. The Cowboys lost goal line Quarterback JW Walsh to graduation, but they landed 4 star Quarterback John Kolar from right under the noses of their chief rival, Oklahoma. The 6-4, 185 Kolar from Norman redshirted a year ago and should back up Rudolph next season.

Taylor Cornelius is a 6-6, 190 sophomore that could provide depth next season.

TCU: The Frogs are going to have to start over in 2016 after losing Trevone Boykin. The bad news is that last year’s back up was also a senior in Bram Kohlhausen. The only other Quarterback that played last year was sophomore Foster Sawyer, but his playing time has been limited.

Zach Allen is a junior who has yet to throw a pass in a game.

Kenny Hill was a transfer from Texas A%M that started for them in 2014. The Frogs have a commitment from 3 star Quarterback Brennen Wooten and TCU has a way of getting the most out of a Quarterback.

Probably, Kenny Hill is the starter at Quarterback for the Horn Frogs in 2016.

Texas: The Quarterback position at Texas has been a mess since Colt McCoy used up his eligibility. Jerrod Heard was the starter for most of last season, but it was a struggle. The fault may have been more with the coaching staff, but Texas fans are frustrated. Tyrone Swoopes started in 2014 and played in goal line situations this past season. Swoopes is a strong runner, but inconsistent as a passer. Last season, the Horns signed 4 star Quarterback Kai Locksley from Baltimore, Maryland. He redshirted a year ago and was recruited by a lot of schools.

For next season, the Horns have Shane Buechele coming in. Buechele is a 4 star recruit out of Arlington, Texas and a fantastic prospect. Also, they have a commitment from the national player of the year in Austin Westlake’s Sam Ehlinger.

Heard probably starts again next season and the most popular person in Austin, Texas is always the back up Quarterback.Well, unless the starting Quarterback happens to be named Vince or Colt.

Texas Tech: Unlike at Texas, the Tech Quarterback situation is secure. Patrick Mahomes threw for 4,653 yards and 36 Touchdowns a year ago. He also ran for 456 yards and 10 more Touchdowns.

Mahomes is an incredible athlete and a fun player to watch.

Davis Webb backed up Mahomes a year ago and is a good player in his own right.

For next year, the Red Raiders have Jett Duffey coming in from Mansfield, Texas.

Mahomes is one of the better Quarterbacks in the country. Texas Tech needs a defense,  but Quarterback is rarely an issue.

West Virginia: Skyler Howard will be back for his senior season after throwing for over 3,000 yards and 26 Touchdowns. Howard also ran for over 500 yards and 6 Touchdowns.

Sophomore William Crest was Howard’s back up last year and he got a little playing time. Last year’s recruiting class for the Mountaineer’s brought in David Sills from Elkton, Maryland and Chris Chugunov from Skillman, West Virginia.

Howard starts again in 2016, but then Crest, Sills and Chugunov battle it out for his replacement.
