On Friday Night in Avon, Indiana, the home team Avon Orioles, hosted visiting Brownsburg, Indiana in a great high school football match up.
Playing Quarterback for Avon High School is senior Michigan commitment Brandon Peters. The 4 star recruit is listed as 6-4, 210.
Over on the other side leading the Brownsburg, Indiana offense was junior Tennessee Quarterback commitment, Hunter Johnson. The internet sites have him listed as 6-3, 195 and also as a 4 star
recruit.
I’ve been following this game for a long time and I have seen so many Quarterbacks get signed by a college program and all of the fans get really excited and say to whomever will listen that they will win a national championship because of landing a certain Quarterback. Obviously, that rarely to never happens.
I am not picking on Chris Simms, the son of former NFL star Phil Simms, but who could ever forget the day that he committed to Tennessee. Volunteer fans everywhere were shouting in the streets already marking down in their minds the future national championships and saying as much verbally to whoever would listen.
Simms spurned the Tennessee Vols for the Texas Longhorns and new coach Mack Brown. Texas fans went on the roof tops screaming here comes the national titles. That did not happen for whatever reasons and Tennessee fans will say that they dodged a bullet with Simms even though he did have some success in college football.
A good to great Quarterback is important, but that’s not all there is to winning football games.
The Avon versus Brownsburg game on Friday Night was a shootout early on with Hunter Johnson’s Brownsburg team leading briefly, 21-20, in the second quarter.
But, Avon led by Brandon Peters came storming back to win over their rival, 56 to 21.

Georgia commit Jacob Eason from Lake Stevens, Washington is considered the top Quarterback in the 2016 recruiting class. Eason is the son of Tony Eason, the former New England Patriot Quarterback, which gives him a slight advantage with this pickers. However, I am not convinced I would take Tony Eason over Michigan commit Brandon Peters after seeing him in action last night. Peters is extremely advanced in his technique with a great arm and the ability to put nice tough on the ball. He can make all of the throws whether the deep bombs, or the short tight throws. Peters is a superb athlete with great feet and running ability. ESPN has him at 6-4, 210 and some of the other sites have him at 6-5, 205. It really doesn’t matter which is accurate, the kid can play and Michigan has a player if he has his head on straight.
Peters just looked fantastic all night long and they turned it on in the second half. It’s hard to tell how a player will adapt from high school football to college football.
That said, I do believe that Jim Harbaugh knows a thing or two about Quarterbacks and will know how to develop Brandon Peters when he gets him on campus. Last recruiting season, Harbaugh and staff brought in two Quarterbacks in 6-7 Zach Gentry and much shorter Alex Malzone. They also
have a transfer that much sit out this season in John O’Korn and Wilton Speight. Not to mention they will also have this year’s back up Shane Morris returning. One of the bigger problems with the Michigan Wolverines in 2014 was the Quarterback position and Harbaugh is doing his best to get that fixed.
Tennessee has had it’s share of Quarterback problems lately. Only at the end of last season, a star emerged in sophomore Joshua Dobbs. As soon as the Volunteers of Tennessee inserted Dobbs, their offense got better immediately. Dobbs is a junior this season and is backed up by true freshman Quinten Dormady from Boerne, Texas. Dormady was very impressive in the Spring Game.
Like Tony Eason this year, Hunter Johnson is considered the top Quarterback in his class. Committing to Tennessee, by the time Johnson arrives at Tennessee, his main competition will be Quinten Dormady because Dobbs will be gone.
Hunter Johnson did not look as good as Brandon Peters, but he is a junior and has another year of development ahead of him. His team went toe to toe with Avon early on, but Avon pulled away late which was not all on Hunter Johnson.
He still has all of the tools with the arm, but I am not that sure he’s the top guy in his class just yet and neither is anyone else right now.
Both of these programs are very fortunate to have either one of these prospects.
