Pac 12 Conference Week 2

Like last week, the Pac 12 had some teams play on the weeknights before everyone else got to play. Arizona moved to 2-0 as expected, but had a rough time with start up program UTSA.

After piling up nearly 800 yards in week one against UNLV, most were expecting the same out of Arizona again in week 2. It never happened for whatever reason.

Washington State lost again on Friday to go to 0-2. They lost to Rutgers in Week 1 and then to Nevada in Week 2 and they really didn’t look good the second week. A Mike Leach coached team is always going to be dangerous, but they are struggling right now.

Oregon put on a show and beat up on Michigan State in a convincing victory that will help them out if they can manage to win the Pac 12. Oregon’s offensive and defensive lines impressed dramatically against the Spartans. But, can they get past the Stanford Cardinal is the next big question mark for the Oregon Ducks.

Their defense looked sensational late in the Michigan State game and maybe they have turned a corner there. Or, maybe Michigan State isn’t as good as expected.

USC vs Stanford was a marquee match up early on in the season and it was a battle of the ages. This was a good game to watch and both of these teams still have a shot at having a sensational season. The Trojans are extremely young, but also extremely talented. While the Stanford Cardinal are probably still going to be a force to be dealt with this season. They still have a really good defense and their offensive line is still one of the best around. The season is not over for Stanford.

There’s still a lot of football left to be played.

Colorado got a win over Massachusetts, but the Buffaloes still have a really long way to go. They have a really good coach in place but he still needs to recruit more talent to Boulder. Colorado University is still one of the more beautiful locations in the world and it should be easy to bring in some talent.

Utah frustrated Fresno State 59-27. The Utes are really looking good so far in this young season. Utah takes on Michigan this week in what could be an interesting match up but Michigan has been a disappointment so far. Utah messed up Stanford’s season last year and could do the same this year for somebody. I’m not sure they are a real contender in the conference but could play the spoiler role.

California moved to 2-0 with a 55-14 whipping of Sacramento State. The Golden Bears have already toppled last season’s win totals and are looking like the most improved team in the conference so far.

Washington held on to beat a feisty Eastern Washington 59-52. Eastern Washington should not have been that much of a problem for the Huskies.  Washington hosts Illinois this week in what could be an offensive juggernaut. I can’t wait to see it.

Arizona State beat New Mexico, 58-23. The Sun Devils D.J. Foster had a career game rushing for 216 yards and catching 3 passes for 54 more yards. Arizona State has an almost all new defense and they didn’t look all that impressive against New Mexico. The Sun Devil offense is good but they are going to need a significant improvement out of their defense if they are going to challenge for the title.

UCLA barely survived Memphis. The Bruin’s Brett Hundley had a good game, but I am not sure he was all that much better than Memphis QB Paxton Lynch, a 6-7 unknown from the state of Florida. The Bruin defense scored 3 times in week one and saved the team from defeat in Virginia and then they struggled in week 2 against Memphis. Paxton Lynch looked like a budding star. UCLA is 2-0 but looks questionable right now.

Oregon State barely got by Hawaii. For the second week in a row, a Pac 12 team barely got past Hawaii. Maybe Hawaii is pretty good, but Washington and Oregon State have seemed a bit of a disappointment so far.

Right now it’s looking like USC, Oregon, Arizona State, Utah, Arizona, Stanford and Cal are as good or better than expected. While Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, UCLA and Colorado are looking a little less or a lot less than expected.

The conference as a whole is looking like USC, Oregon, and maybe Stanford or UCLA have an outside shot at the playoffs.
