With some commentators, I turn the sound down on my television because to be perfectly honest I don’t care much for what they have to say.

Brent Musburger and Jesse Palmer were commentating on the Prime SEC Network broadcast last weekend featuring Florida and Missouri.

Palmer suggested that Ole Miss might have it’s hands full with Memphis in their game coming up which was Saturday, October 17th. He said something along the lines of ‘don’t sleep on Memphis’.

Musburger went into a laugh that I will not soon forget. In fact, the laugh was so loud and so long and so annoying that I may never forget it for the rest of my life.

I like Ole Miss and I like Memphis and I really didn’t care who won the game. But, from that point on, I found myself pulling for the Memphis Tigers.

I don’t know if anyone from the Memphis program heard about the laughter, or if that had been an extra motive to beat Ole Miss.

But, after going down 14-0 to Ole Miss early in the game, Memphis controlled the rest of the game to shock the nation with a 37-24 win over the highly rated Ole Miss Rebels.

Brent Musburger is certainly shocked.

Jesse Palmer and myself? Not so much.

Last season, I wrote about totally unknown and unwanted Memphis Quarterback Paxton Lynch who grew up right under the noses of SEC coaches in Florida and Memphis was the only football program to offer.

ESPN has already been on the tube with their talking heads making excuses for the Ole Miss Rebels. Well, Robert Nkemdiche got hurt in the first half and he wasn’t able to put pressure on the Quarterback. Really? Is that really the best you have?

In two and a half seasons as a starter on the Defensive Line for Ole Miss, Nkemdiche has 5 and 1/2 sacks. Nkemdiche is potentially great, but he’s still not there and he was being handled fairly well by the Memphis Offensive Line when he was in the game.

 

Maybe instead of making excuses, we could consider a couple of options.

The SEC might be a tad overrated, or Memphis just might be a good football team.

 

They are certainly not a team that should be laughed at by an announcer on a big Network. But, in my humble opinion, nobody deserves to be laughed at. These guys all put in the same amount of hard work that members of SEC programs do. They show up to the practice facilities, to the weight rooms and to the film rooms and hopefully to the classrooms. SEC players certainly don’t do the the classroom thing. It’s all about winning and arrogance with these programs. We are better than everybody else, or so that’s what we are forced to listen to and read time after time.

But, on Saturday October 17th, Ole Miss was not better than Memphis and it really wasn’t that close.

Memphis moved to 6-0 on the season and the earlier 5 wins were against teams that aren’t top notch.

But, they are a solid team, anyway, as they went out and proved on the field today.

Paxton Lynch, all 6-7, 245 of him, had thrown for over 1,500 yards and 10 Touchdowns going into the game and zero Interceptions. Yes, that’s right, Lynch had not thrown an Interception all season.

Against the Ole Miss defense, Lynch did throw his first Interception of the season. But, he also threw for 384 yards and 3 Touchdowns.

It wasn’t all Lynch, because the Memphis running game produced over 100 yards on the ground led by Jarvis Cooper and his 76 yards rushing.

The Memphis defense, while giving up 372 passing yards to Chad Kelly and Ole Miss, they also picked off 2 passes and held the Rebels to 40 yards rushing.

The bottom line is Memphis is still undefeated and the Ole Miss Rebels now have 2 losses and stand at 5-2 on the year.

But, let’s continue to be real here. The Ole Miss fan base was also more than likely laughing at Memphis and they truly circled this game in the win column before the season started.

 

Maybe we should stop being arrogant and focus on hard work and getting prepared to play football. Honestly, I have no clue if the football staff and players felt the same way as the fans and the media, but I can only assume that they did.

Nobody deserves to be laughed at and especially not an undefeated Memphis football team.
