The highest rated team in the conference, the Oregon Ducks, did well to keep their image hot.

They beat up Wyoming 48-14 and Marcus Mariota had his usual type of day throwing for over 200 yards and 2 Touchdowns and running for another 71 and 2 more touchdowns.

He hit rising star Devon Allen for one Touchdown pass and former basketball player Jonathon Loyd on the other. The Oregon defense was not quite as impressive this week as they were against Michigan State, but then they didn’t have to be.

1-2 Washington State is up next for the Ducks and shouldn’t be much of a problem.

USC, after being so impressive last week in their hard fought win over Stanford, looked horrible this past weekend losing to a not very good Boston College, 31-37. Embarrassing loss for the Trojans and a black eye for the Pac 12 when reputation is going to mean so much to the biased panel of 13 voting for the playoff teams. But, then, inconsistency can be expected out of such a young team.

Florida transfer Tyler Murphy lit up the Trojan defense for 191 yards rushing from his Quarterback position, but he only passed for 54 yards and an interception.

Boston College gave up 214 yards rushing to James Conner of Pitt, but only allowed Buck Allen 31 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Cody Kessler threw for 317 yards on 31 out of 41 passing and 4 Touchdowns but it was not enough. Super freshman Adoree Jackson had a 50 yard kick off return.

USC is off next week and then has another Pac 12 game so they had better get it back together.

Stanford bounced back big, but they were playing Army so that could have been expected. The Cardinal defense held Army to 207 total yards winning this game 35-0.

Kevin Hogan was 20 out of 28 passing for 216 yards and 4 Touchdowns. Barry Sanders Jr had 92 yards rushing off of 9 carries to lead the Stanford running game. Ty Montgomery had 8 catches for 82 yards and a score.

Blake Martinez and AJ Tarpley have stepped up at the Inside Linebackers and helped ease the loss of Shayne Skove.

Arizona State beat Colorado 38-24. But the win may have been very costly to the Sun Devils as star Quarterback Taylor Kelly injured his foot. Kelly is expected to miss 1 or 2 games which means he will miss the Thursday night game against the UCLA Bruins for sure and maybe the following game against the USC Trojans. These are must wins for the Sun Devils and the Bruins and Trojans are struggling.

Mike Bercovici is going to fill in for Kelly but has played very little.

DJ Foster picked up the slack with 147 yards rushing on 20 carries.

Colorado’s Quarterback Sefo Liufau was 31 out of 46 passes for 278 yards and 3 touchdowns but he also threw 2 interceptions. Christian Powell ran for 118 yards on 11 carries.

Arizona State moves to 3-0 but trouble loom with the loss of Taylor Kelly and a harder schedule. Colorado continues to struggle and drops to 1-2.

Arizona beat Nevada in an exciting game, 35-28.   Arizona has struggled on defense but Nevada is a tough offense to stop. Scooby Wright at Middle Linebacker had a great game with 14 total tackles, 1 of those for loss.

Anu Solomon completed 22 out of 26 attempts for 278 yards and 3 Touchdowns, while running for 60 yards on 7 carries. Solomon beat out a bunch of other Quarterbacks and won the job and is proving to be a future star.

Arizona moves to 3-0 on the season but has not been without struggles and starts Pac 12 play next week. I am excited about that because the level of competition improves for everybody.

Washington struggled in their first 2 games, but was still 2-0 coming in to this past weekend. They entertained Illinois who was coming in at 2-0, also.

I figured this game would be a shootout and it kind of was. Washington had a shootout and Illinois was gut shot early and slowly bled to death. The Huskies just have too much speed for Illinois and was clear pretty early. Thanks go out to former coach Steve Sarkisian for bringing in the talent and to new coach Chris Peterson for using that talent effectively.

Cyler Miles did well as the Huskies quarterback connecting on 15 out of 20 passes for 191 yards and 1 Touchdown.

Hau’oli Kikaha is already up to 5 sacks on the year and had 3 in this game. The Big 10’s struggles continue and the Huskies buried Illinois from the opening minute.

UCLA traveled to Arlington, Texas to play the Texas Longhorns and barely got out alive with a 20-17 win. This game may have been like the Arizona State game in that the Bruins lost their Quarterback to injury. Hundley went out in the first quarter with an injury to his left elbow, but it’s expected to be minor and he should be back for the next game against Arizona State.

Jerry Neuheisel had to replace Hundley and had a good performance going 23 out of 30 for 178 yards and 2 Touchdowns including the winning pass to Jordan Payton.

Bruin Running Back Paul Perkins had a career high 126 yards rushing on 24 carries. Paul Perkins also led the team in receiving with 5 catches for 69 yards.

This was not an exciting offensive game to watch and both defenses played fairly well.

Washington State finally got their first win improving to 1-2 on the season with a 59-21 schoolyard bully beat down of Portland State.

Connor Halliday was 41 out of 65 for 544 yards and 6 Touchdowns. What’s bad is that Halliday even threw 2 Interceptions against a division 1 AA opponent.

Isiah Myers had 11 catches for 227 for 3 touchdowns.  A win is a win.

 

 

Other than the USC Trojans, this was a great weekend for the Pac 12 Conference. Oregon continues to impress and Stanford is still in the thick of things.

UCLA, however, is 3-0 but has continued to struggle. Texas should have been a quality opponent but they just aren’t right now. Probably the most impressive team of the week was the Washington Huskies.
