Notre Dame vs Michigan One Last Time

It’s sad that this series has to end.

Michigan leads the Irish in this series, 24-17-1. Who knows if these teams will ever play again. As a fan of college football, I will miss it.

Before the season started I figured Michigan would be improved this season and I took Notre Dame as probably slightly overrated. Maybe I was wrong on both.

This game was billed by some as Notre Dame’s QB Everett Golson vs Michigan’s QB Devin Gardner.

Gardner threw 3 Interceptions and 0 Touchdowns and Golson threw 3 Touchdowns and 0 Interceptions. Gardner also fumbled the ball once.

Not hard to figure out who won this game from those numbers and they won it by a landslide. The turnovers were really not even a factor as it was 21-0 at halftime before the Wolverines ever even turned the ball over.

Last game in this series was a blowout and not even all that interesting.

Neither team could get the run game going. Notre Dame only ran for 54 yards and Michigan for 100. Actually, it was just one of those nights for Michigan. They turned the ball over 4 times

Michigan put together a nice little drive in their very first series and it looked like this was going to be a game but Michigan’s drive stalled and they had to settle for a Field Goal which they badly missed. The Michigan kicker had a terrible night, even worse than his teammates.

Sorry Michigan fans, but I just don’t believe Devin Gardner is ever going to get it done at QB.

Cody Riggs, the transfer from Florida, did screw up a punt return and nearly was a goat, but made up for it with another punt return right before half. Plus, he played well on defense and had an interception later in the game. I said before the season that Riggs would be a difference maker for the Irish and that is coming true.

William Fuller, Amir Carlisle, and Corey Robinson at Wide Receiver are big time for the Irish. Fuller and Robinson are young sophomores and Carlisle is a senior transfer from bitter rival USC.

The play of the game was probably a 4th and 3 situation on the Michigan 37 for the Irish when Everett Golson hit William Fuller for a first down and then the Irish went in to score to pretty much put the game away at 21-0. Fuller had 9 catches on the night for 89 yards and a TD. Carlisle had a really big night with 7 catches for 61 yards and 2 TDs.

Ben Koyack is the next big time Irish Tight End and at 6-5, 255 should be a draft pick next Spring.

The Irish have a lot of young talent like Defensive Ends Andrew Trumbetti, Kolin Hill, and safety Drue Tranquill and that bodes well for their future.

Everett Golson is a master of hitting a receiver 20 to 60 yards down field while he is a dead run which makes him special. He is looking more and more like a Heisman candidate.

The Irish won really easily but this game was really not the blowout that the score indicated. Michigan actually had more total yards than Notre Dame, but it was just one of those nights where everything went wrong.

Horrible way to end such a storied rivalry.
