Arizona: After 2 seasons of 8-5, Rich Rod’s Arizona team won the Pac 12 South and finished 10-4 in 2014. The following season, the Wildcats dipped to 7-6. 2016 was a disaster with the Wildcats finishing the season with a 3-9 record. Rich Rod and his Wildcats looked pretty helpless last season and former star Quarterback Anu Solomon has graduated and transferred to Baylor to finish his career. With Solomon gone, the Wildcats have Brandon Dawkins who played a lot last season throwing for 1,345 yards and 8 Touchdowns while running for 944 yards and 10 Touchdowns. Dawkin’s back up may be Khalil Tate who was a 17 year old last season as a freshman. Tate showed some athleticism last year, but his passing was really erratic. In their 2017 recruiting class, the Wildcats signed K’Hari Lane from Montezuma, Georgia and Rhett Rodriguez. Both are 3 star

recruits and Rhett is the son of head coach Rod.

The Wildcats are supposed to be gaining former minor league baseball player Donavan Tate who is 26 years old. We will see what happens with that. He has not played football for probably 8 years.

Arizona State: Sun Devil coach Todd Graham had two 10 win seasons in a row in 2013 and 2014. But, the past two seasons have not been great for the Devils with 6-7 and 5-7 records. Old school Sun Devil fans that remember Frank Kush are not happy with losing records. This season, it appears that they have some serious talent at the Quarterback position. But, they must overcome the inconsistencies they showed last season. A sophomore and two freshmen started every game last year, but those guys have matured and another enters the picture.

Of last year’s Quarterbacks, junior to be Manny Wilkins played the most. Wilkins is 6-3, 200 and he threw for 2,329 yards and 12 Touchdowns last season.

Dillon Sterling-Cole was a true freshman last season and the former 4 star recruit from Houston, Texas did get some early playing time. He threw the ball to the wrong colored jerseys too many times with a single Touchdown to his credit and 4 Interceptions. Brady White was another highly recruited Quarterback signed by the Sun Devils in the 2015 class. He redshirted as a freshman and then saw some action last season throwing for a couple of Touchdowns before being lost for the season against UCLA. Bryce Perkins was thought to have a bright future at ASU, but was injured. The Chandler, Arizona native is a very athletic 6-3, 210 Quarterback that can run and pass.

Chandler, Arizona also produced another Quarterback that just signed with the Sun Devils in 6-4, 190 Ryan Kelley. He was the 11th ranked Dual Threat Quarterback by ESPN.

The Sun Devils got a huge surprise in the arrival of former Alabama Crimson Tide Quarterback Blake Barnett. Originally from Corona, California, Barnett was one of the top ranked Quarterbacks in the nation coming out of high school and he redshirted at Alabama as a freshman. Watching Spring practice, it was clear that Barnett has a very strong arm which has to appeal to the Arizona State coaches. Barnett is the first ever 5 star Quarterback in the modern era to sign with the Sun Devils. There aren’t a lot of schools in the country with better Quarterbacks than Arizona State and I am predicting that Barnett is named starter and several others announce they are transferring.

California: A new coach and a new era begins at Cal. In something of a surprise move, the Golden Bears fired Sonny Dykes and hired Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator Justin Wilcox. I suppose they were tired of not having a defense and Wilcox is a defensive minded guy. The exciting development  for Cal fans is that Wilcox hired Eastern Washington head coach Beau Baldwin as his new Offensive Coordinator. Baldwin ran some outstanding offenses at Eastern Washington. His Defensive Coordinator might be just as exciting for Bear fans with the hiring of Tim DeRuyter who has been known to turn defenses around. But, our topic is Quarterback and the Golden Bears are starting over again. Chase Forest was slated to start for Cal before the arrival of Texas Tech grad transfer Davis Webb. Forest threw all of 18 passes in 2015, but played very little in 2016. Ross Bowers was a member of the 2015 recruiting class and he may have passed Forest on the depth charts.

Max Gilliam and Victor Viramontes are competing for playing time since coming in with the 2016 class. The most recent recruiting class, brought in by new coach Justin Wilcox, features Quarterback Chase Garbers a very highly rated player. Collin Moore is also looking for playing time.

Bowers probably starts, but Forest still has a lot to say about it. Max Gilliam might have an outside shot.

Colorado: Sefo Liufau has finally used up his eligibility, but the Buffaloes already know who his replacement is in Steven Montez from El Paso, Texas, performed admirably when replacing Liufau. Montez threw for 1,078 yards and 9 Touchdowns and he ran for 231 yards and another score. Montez has good size at 6-5, 225, and he has a good arm and runs really well.

Sam Noyer signed with the Buffaloes in the 2016 class and he redshirted last year. Noyer, or a walk-on should be the top back up in 2017.

Think winning doesn’t help recruiting? Colorado had no 4 stars in the 2016 recruiting class. That was after finishing the previous season with a 4-9 record. In 2016, Colorado surprises the world with a 10-4 turnaround and they bring in an impressive seven 4 star recruits. One of the 4 star recruits is Tyler Lytle from Anaheim Servite High School. Lytle was rated the 14th best drop back passing Quarterback in the country. Lytle has enormous potential and at 6-5, 205, he will need to pack on some muscle.

As long as Montez stays healthy, the Colorado program is on the move upwards.

Oregon: Like the California Golden Bears, the Ducks also fired their coach. They brought in South Florida head coach Willie Taggart with the hope of never letting a 4-8 record happen again. The Ducks had quite a few injury problems last season and they had 4 freshman starting on the Offensive Line. At Quarterback, the Ducks used 6-6, 225 true freshman Justin Herbert for most of the season. Herbert has that great size, but he’s surprisingly mobile as well. He’s got a really good arm and he was fairly accurate for a true freshman with no experience. He threw for 1,936 yards and 19 Touchdowns. We are seeing more and more big guys that can run and Herbert is not Marcus Mariota, but he can run well pretty well.

Travis Jonsen is also available, but he’s been at Oregon for 2 years already and has not played. Jonsen was a 4 star recruit from Anaheim Servite High School in the class of 2015.

Braxton Burmeister was only a 3 star recruit from La Jolla, California. But, he was an early enrollee that looked really good in the Spring and he might have a shot to play. Burmeister is 6-1, 210 and a true dual threat guy.

Herbert probably starts, but Burmeister might threaten.

Oregon State: Darell Garretson transferred to Oregon State from Utah State and he started the first 6 games last year before being lost to injury. Garretson was not overly impressive, but he was somewhat better than what the Beavers had previously at Quarterback. Marcus McMaryion came in and finished the season for Garretson and he looked probably a little better than the 2015 season. The Beavers were 2-4 under Garretson and 2-4 under McMaryion.

Freshman Conor Blount came in from Wisconsin and played some as a freshman. The Oregon State coaching staff signed 6-7, 230 Jake Luton in their most recent recruiting class. Luton was a Junior College All American at Ventura College after originally signing with Idaho out of Marysville, Washington. Luton looks like a good Quarterback and he probably takes over the job.

USC: The Trojans were one of the best teams in the country by the end of the year and a large part of Sam Darnold. After replacing Max Browne when the Trojans were 1-2, Darnold threw for 3,086 yards and 31 Touchdowns in leading USC to a 9-1 finish.

Redshirt freshman Matt Fink probably backs up Darnold. Fink is not like the average USC Quarterback. As a high school senior, Fink passed for over 1,000 yards and he ran for over 1,000 yards, also. Even though he’s an incredible athlete, Fink will still have to hold off true freshman Jack Sears. 4 star Sears followed Darnold as the Quarterback at San Clemente High School.

Darnold will be eligible to declare for the NFL Draft after this season and he should be one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy.

For the 2018 recruiting class, the Trojans have a commitment from super star Long Beach Poly Quarterback Matt Corral.

Stanford: The Quarterback job should be a battle between Ryan Burns, Keller Chryst and KJ Costello. Burns, a 6-5, 235 senior from Leesburg, Virginia started the first 7 games, but was replaced by Chryst when the Cardinal had a 4-3 record. They won the rest of their games to finish 10-3. Chryst  started the last 6 games and seemingly saved the season. The nephew of Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst is a strong runner with a similar arm to Burns. In the Sun Bowl, Chryst was injured and Burns came in and helped the Cardinal beat North Carolina.

Costello was a very highly recruited Quarterback from Coto de Caza, California. In spite of the rankings, Costello probably still sits at 3rd team behind Chryst and Burns.

Stanford signed 2nd ranked drop back passer in the country from Norcross, Georgia, Davis Mills. He may need a little time to bulk up and learn the offense, but Mills is really talented and one of the nation’s very best. He is listed as 6-4, 200 with 4.6 speed and he’s an excellent scrambler. David Shaw and the Cardinal coaching staff put together a really good recruiting class and they are here to stay.

UCLA: Josh Rosen missed a big part of last season and senior Mike Fafaul replaced him, but the Bruins slumped to 4-8. Rosen, as a true freshman was about as good as they come, but besides injuries, he was already slumping in 2016. Fafaul was a former Walk-on and he was the only other experienced Quarterback the Bruins had. In the 2016 recruiting class, UCLA brought in 4 star Quarterbacks Devon Modster and Matt Lynch. Modster is 6-2, 220 from Las Flores, California and the 13th ranked Pocket Passer in the nation. Lynch is 6-5, 220 and from Broomfield, Colorado. Both Morrell Osling who was ranked 23rd by ESPN at his position and only a 3 star. But, that means little. They also signed 3 star Austin Burton from Winter Garden, Florida. Burton is 6-4, 205 and was ranked as the 39th best drop back passer.

of these guys have some talent and could push for back up status, or even playing time. The Bruins weren’t satisfied with depth at Quarterback so they signed 2 more Quarterbacks with the 2017 recruiting class. From Lancaster, California, the Bruins brought in 6-2, 220 Dual Threat

Utah: The Utes have a really good situation at Quarterback with the return of senior Quarterback Troy Williams. After starting off his career at Washington, Williams transferred to a Junior College and then to Utah where he started last season leading the Utes to a 9-4 record. Williams threw for 2,757 yards and 15 Touchdowns while running for 235 yards and 5 more Touchdowns. Williams will start again, unless senior Alabama Quarterback transfer Cooper Bateman can take his job. Bateman did start a game in 2015, but lost the job to Jake Coker. He completed 37 out of 52 passes in 2015, and in 2016 he completed 12 out of 14. Bateman is no chump and he could be a serious threat to win the job. He did not play in any of the championship games, but he’s been through it all. If he’s given a fair shot, I like his chances and he deserves the opportunity.

A bad break for Bateman is last year’s back up Quarterback Tyler Huntley. He is good. Huntley was a 4 star recruit coming out of Hallandale Beach, Florida. He was the Gatorade player of the year in Florida for 2015. He can play. In high school, Hallandale threw for over 9,000 yards. Against the mighty St Thomas Aquinas of Ft Lauderdale, he threw for 478 yards. He also ran for over 200 yards against Dillard High School of Ft Lauderdale. He was ranked by ESPN as the 16th best Dual Threat Quarterback, but that was probably because he was only 6-1, 175. Huntley only played sparingly as a true freshman after enrolling early, but he completed 5 out of 7 passes.

Walk-on Drew Lisk had a super productive high school career in Utah and has decent size and athletic ability. He’s not your standard Walk-on.

In the 2017 recruiting class, the Utes signed Jason Shelley a 3 star Dual Threat Quarterback from Frisco, Texas.

Washington: The defending Pac 12 champion the Washington Huskies return one of the nation’s best Quarterbacks in Jake Browning. Forget about people calling him overrated. He’s a junior to be and he’s already started 2 seasons and led the Huskies to the Pac 12 Championship last year. They were not the best team in the Conference by season’s ending and were in over their heads against Alabama in the playoffs. As a sophomore last season, Browning threw for 3,430 yards and 43 Touchdowns.

The Huskies will get one more year out of Browning before he collects the big bucks from the NFL. Backing up Browning will be KJ Carta-Samuels again. Carta-Samuels is a good Quarterback

himself and he might start at some schools. He will be a junior and has had good playing experience for a back up Quarterback.

Daniel Bridge-Gadd redshirted last year after signing with Washington as a 2 star recruit from Paradise Valley, Arizona. Bridge-Gadd has decent size and had a phenomenal high school playing career and is only rated a 2 star? Jake Haener was a 3 star recruit from Danville, California that should redshirt this season.

Washington State: The Pac 12 has to be the best Quarterback conference in 2017 with so many returners including the Cougar’s Luke Falk. Not to take anything away from Falk, but whoever plays Quarterback for Mike Leach is going to put up big numbers. Having said that, Falk is a little better than most Leach Quarterbacks.

Tyler Hilinski was Falk’s back up last year and is a capable Quarterback for sure. He completed 24 out of 30 passes last year.

Anthony Gordon transferred from City College of San Francisco and will battle for playing time. Leach doesn’t usually grab any highly recruited Quarterbacks for some reason in spite of always getting air time for passing success. But, incoming freshman Connor Neville is a 4 star Dual Threat Quarterback from Wilsonville, Oregon. He should be interesting to watch, but he redshirts this season with Falk returning.
