Tommy Armstrong has started so long at Nebraska it seems like he’s been there since the days of Tom Osborne. But, he was a senior last year, shockingly, and now they need a new Quarterback. Some Nebraska fans will tell you that they needed a new Quarterback last year while Armstrong was still playing. But, their only choice was back up Ryker Fyfe.
The 2017 season will be a different story in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Cornhusker fans may like how this turns out.
I may owe an apology to Nebraska coach Mike Riley when all is said and done because I was somewhat harsh on the Husker powers that be for his hiring. In my opinion, they should have hired Oregon Offensive Coordinator Scott Frost who was a former standout Quarterback for the Huskers. Frost was hired to coach the Central Florida where he took a team without a win in 2015 and led them to a 6-7 record in his first season as a head coach. I still think some day Frost will be the
Nebraska Cornhusker head coach, but in the meantime, Mike Riley might do better than I thought he would.
Sorry, coach.
The candidates to replace Tommy Armstrong are Tulane transfer Tanner Lee, redshirt freshman Patrick O’Brien and true freshman Tristan Gebbia.
Tanner Lee has the most experience and will be a junior this season. At Tulane, the 6-4, 220 Lee started as a freshman and threw for just under 2,000 yards. But, he did have more Interceptions than he did Touchdowns that season. The following year, Lee threw for just over 1,600 yards but he threw far fewer Interceptions.
But, after a 3-9 season in 2015, the Tulane Green Wave fired their head coach, Curtis Johnson. His replacement was the very successful Willie Fritz from Georgia Southern. Fritz had done well, but he used a running offense. Tanner Lee thought he might be better off elsewhere.
After transferring to Nebraska, Lee had to follow the NCAA rules and sit out a season. With Tommy Armstrong going through his senior season, it was an ideal situation for Tanner Lee. On the sidelines with Lee and learning the offense was freshman Quarterback Patrick O’Brien, a former 3 star recruit from San Juan Capistrano, California. The 6-4, 230 O’Brien was the 20th ranked Pro Style Quarterback.
Both Tanner Lee and Patrick O’Brien looked really good and crisp in the Spring Game. Both were extremely accurate and made some outstanding throws in the game and earned the praise of most that watched the games.
The dark horse in the Quarterback race is true freshman Tristan Gebbia from Calabasas, California. ESPN had Gebbia rated as their 12th ranked drop back passer and a 4 star recruit. Their listing had
him at 6-2, 180 and the 2017 Spring Roster at Nebraska has him at 6-3, 180. He could be either 6 foot 2 inches tall or 6 feet 3 inches tall, but there’s no way he’s 180 pounds. He’s extremely skinny, but he really impressed me with his accuracy and his mobility mostly. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and he looks cool under pressure.

I was extremely impressed with true freshman Tristan Gebbia. He has the look and potential to be the future of Nebraska football. But, Gebbia needs to hit the training table and the weight room all the while adjusting to being away from home and learning a new offense. Lee and O’Brien mostly had the luxury of going against the back up defenders and Gebbia spent most of his playing time going up against the Cornhusker’s starting defense.
I was really impressed with freshman Tristan Gebbia.
Tristan Gebbia had a fantastic high school career at Calabasas High School in California. He threw for 13,109 yards and 141 Touchdowns. As a senior alone, Gebbia threw for 5,338 yards and 61 Touchdowns. High school stats may not mean that much in the big picture and transition to major college football, but this kid can play.
Right now, Tristan Gebbia needs to eat some big ole Nebraska steaks from Omahasteaks.com and live in the weight room. I think this kid can be really good if everything works out. The ‘IT factor’ gets extremely overused, but Gebbia looks like he could have IT.
More than likely, we will have to wait a couple of seasons and see what happens after a redshirt
season to bulk up and learn the system.
Spring Game commentator and former Nebraska Running Back Ameer Abdullah seemed to prefer Patrick O’Brien and there’s no problem on my end with that choice, either.
O’Brien is already there physically at about 230 pounds and he was extremely accurate in the Husker’s Spring Game. In high school, O’Brien was known as a strong runner as well as passer and with his size he could be durable even at the college level running the football.
However, supposedly the most improved player in the Nebraska Spring drills was junior Tanner Lee. As the most experienced of the group, Lee had an advantage going in.
Tanner Lee is the leader going into the Fall as well. Come Summer workouts, he should be the starting Quarterback. O’Brien and Gebbia still have a chance at competing for the job before the first game and going forward.
But, as of right now, it’s Tanner Lee at Nebraska.
I think the loyal Nebraska fan base is going to like this coming football season.
