Game of the Week: Georgia vs South Carolina Week 3

My 6th ranked team, the Georgia Bulldogs are traveling over to Columbia, South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks in the College Football Crazy Game of the Week in the 3rd week of the 2014 season.

South Carolina began the season ranked #14 in the CFC Poll, but they were dropped completely out after putting up little fight when the Texas A&M Aggies came to town.

If I was the coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, I would try and take Todd Gurley out of the equation and make Hutson Mason beat them with his arm. Mason is a capable Quarterback, it seems, but he is a 5th year senior with limited experience and it would be nice to see if he is able to beat anyone if needing to throw the ball.

But, the biggest problem with that game plan is that stopping Toddy Gurley will be much easier said than done. Gurley is a 6-1, 230 Running Back with great speed and has rushed for over 2500 career yards at the beginning of his 3rd year of college ball. He had 198 yards rushing against Clemson in Week 1 and the Dogs were off last weekend resting up and getting ready for the Gamecocks.

The Bulldogs are loaded at Running Back and have a good Offensive Line and some talent at Wide Receiver.

Stopping their offense will be no easy task and the Gamecocks did little against the Aggies back in August.

The Bulldogs have not been known for great defense in recent years, but this season could be different.

Georgia gave up some yardage early on against Clemson in week 1, but they clamped down in the second half and I expect the second half version to be the defense that we see the rest of the year. New Defensive Coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has the Bulldog defense looking like the Junkyard Dawg Defenses of years ago.

They’ve only played one game so there’s no way to know which defense will show up in Columbia, but I am thinking the improved version will be there and be hard to deal with.

South Carolina has 2 games under their belt. They were blown out embarrassingly in week one and then bounced back against East Carolina in week 2.

Even though they did come back and earn a win against East Carolina, they were not totally convincing.

Quarterback Dylan ThompsonĀ  has not been bad for the Gamecocks. He’s thrown for 632 yards in 2 games with 45 completions in 78 attempts. He has 5 Touchdowns on the year and 2 interceptions.

The Gamecock Offensive Line was thought to be a team strength going into the season but has not lived up to expectations.

Running Back Mike Davis was a long shot Heisman candidate early on but had bruised ribs and only rushed for 15 yards in the season opener but had a nice 101 yards rushing in week 2.

The Gamecocks have big play guys Nick Jones and Pharoh Cooper at Wide Receiver.

What cost them in game one was mostly defense and the defense may not get any better this season.

South Carolina has had 3 11 win seasons in a row, but that streak is in severe danger this year. If they have any shot left at all of winning 11 games in 2014 they will have to win this game.

But, I just don’t see it happening.
