2010 Recruiting Class: How Did ESPN Do?

1. Ronald Powell – Florida (6-4, 224) Ath; Moreno Valley, California: Powell was considered the top player in the country in 2010. He signed with Florida and played in every game as a freshman and made one start. Powell started every game his sophomore season in 2011. During Spring Drills going into his junior season, Powell tore his ACL and then re-injured it gaining him a medical redshirt for the 2012 season. Powell came back for the 2013 season, but only started 8 games. Naturally, he left for the NFL after 2013 and was a 5th round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints. The Florida Gators and the Texas Longhorns absolutely dominated this recruiting class and neither of them did particularly well on the football field over the next few seasons.

2. Jackson Jeffcoat – Texas (6-5, 225) DE; Plano, Texas: Florida and Texas just killed it in this class and both of them soon went on a tail spin. Will Muschamp helped Texas lure in Jeffcoat and Jordan Hicks and then he took off for Florida. Jeffcoat is the son of Dallas Cowboy legend Jim Jeffcoat.

Jeffcoat was a beast coming off the edge and far quicker and more athletic than his father who was better against the run and a decent pass rusher. Jeffcoat had some injuries while at Texas, but he was a freshman All American and then a consensus All American as a senior as well as the winner of the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s best Defensive End in 2013. He had 13 Quarterback sacks as a senior and finished with 82 total tackles. Strangely, he was not drafted but signed with the Seattle Seahawks who eventually cut him allowing him to find a roster spot and then a starting position as an Outside Linebacker for the Washington Redskins.

3. Dominique Easley – Florida (6-2, 260) DT; Staten Island, New York: Great athlete out of New York that played sparingly as a true freshman in 2010. He started every game as a sophomore and had 7.5 tackles for loss. Easley was dominating in 2012 up until he tore his ACL against Florida State. Coming back the next season, Easley ws playing well until he was injured again and then declared for the NFL Draft. Easley was picked by the New England Patriots with the 29th pick of the first round in the 2014 NFL Draft and he signed a 4 year contract. Even though he is on injured reserve, he still got a Super Bowl Ring with the World Champions Patriot.

4. Jordan Hicks – Texas (6-2, 210) LB; Westchester, Ohio: The nation’s best Linebacker prospect. He came on strong at the end of his freshman season. Hicks looked like a budding star for the Horns and he was finishing among the team leaders in tackles as a sophomore. During his junior year, he was injured and missed most of the end of the season. Coming back strong as a senior in 2013, he severely injured his hip against Kansas State and was out for the remainder of the season. He got a medical redshirt season and got to play his senior season again which worked out well for him leading the Longhorns in tackles last season. Hicks was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 3rd round of this year’s draft.

5. Michael Dyer – Auburn (5-9, 200) RB; Little Rock, Arkansas: Dyer was a major part of the Auburn Tigers winning the national championship in 2010 rushing for over 1,000 yards as a true

freshman. He was the offensive player of the game in the national title game for Auburn against the Oregon Ducks rushing for 143 yards. He ran for 1,242 yards as a sophomore and made All SEC. That’s when his story gets weird. Dyer was suspended before the Tiger’s bowl game in 2011 and requested a transfer. Dyer transferred to Arkansas State because his offensive coordinator, Gus Malzahn was there. He got in trouble there, too, and was dismissed from the team. Dyer eventually made his way to Louisville. Dyer ran for 223 yards in 2013 and then for 481 yards in 2014 before using up his eligibility. He recently signed with the Oakland Raiders.

6. Lamarcus Joyner – Florida State (5-8, 165) CB; Miami, Florida: He played Cornerback and returned kicks as a true freshman in 2010. Joyner moved to safety in 2011 and was one of the team’s best defenders as well as still returning kicks. He also picked off 4 passes in 2011. He started as well in 2012 and then was a team leader on the Seminoles 2013 national championship run. After the national championship, Joyner was taken in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft by the St Louis Rams.

7. Robert Woods – USC (6-1, 180) WR; Gardena, California: Woods was one of the Trojans top receivers as a true freshman and tied for the team lead with 64 catches. He improved dramatically in 2011 with 111 catches for 1,292 yards and 15 Touchdowns. At the same time, USC brought in another outstanding freshman in Marqise Lee and he had 73 receptions as a true freshman for 1,143 yards and 11 Touchdowns and Lee would intrude a bit on Woods’ numbers. Woods caught 76 passes as a junior while Lee caught 118. Woods still left early and was drafted in the 2nd round by the

Buffalo Bills. In two seasons, woods has 105 receptions in the NFL. Besides being an outstanding football player, Woods was a great sprinter in high school in the 200 meters and 400 meters.

8. Seantrel Henderson – Miami (6-7, 295) OT; Saint Paul, Minnesota: Henderson signed with USC originally but changed his mind when USC was placed on probation due to the Reggie Bush fiasco. He wanted out of his scholarship to USC and to attend Miami which was his second choice. Henderson started 9 games as a true freshman in 2010. He stayed all 4 years at Miami but stayed in trouble as often as he started football games. He was drafted in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills where he started every game as a rookie.

9. Matt Elam – Florida (5-11, 205) Ath; Palm Beach Gardens, Florida: Elam came to play at Florida and was one of their top tacklers even though he was not a starter. Elam started at strong safety in 2011 and was a team leader. Elam was an All American in 2012 and declared for the NFL. I don’t often agree with these decisions, but Elam made the right one and was picked in the 1st round by the defensive minded Baltimore Ravens where he has been a star.

10. Jonathon Dowling – Florida (6-3, 180) Safety; Bradenton, Florida: Dowling played briefly at Florida before being booted from the team. He transferred to Western Kentucky where he was a star in 2012 and 2013. He totaled 9 Interceptions and was among the team’s leader in tackles for 2 seasons before declaring for the NFL. Dowling was drafted in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders.

11. Jeff Luc – Florida State (6-1, 241) ILB; Port Saint Lucie, Florida: Luc was a highly recruited Inside Linebacker of Haitian descent. He was a back up two seasons for the Seminoles and he transferred to Cincinnati and sat out the 2012 season. Luc played during his junior year in 2013, but turned it on strong as a senior. In 2014 Jeff Luc led the Bearcats in tackles with 133, plus he had 9 tackles for loss and 6 and a half sacks. Jeff Luc signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent. Whether he sticks with the Dolphins remains to be seen.

12. Demar Dorsey – Michigan (6-1, 180) Safety; Ft Lauderdale, Florida: He signed with Michigan but they wouldn’t admit him into school, he was supposedly headed to Louisville but wound up at Arizona Western JC. Now, Dorsey is playing Arena League Football.

13. Mike Davis – Texas (6-0, 176) WR; Dallas, Texas: Davis was second on the team in receptions as a true freshman with 47. He followed up that performance with 45 catches the following season and then he caught 57 as a junior. Davis was going to declare for the NFL draft after his junior season, but decided to come back for his senior season and he snagged 51 passes in 2013. Although he caught 200 passes during his career at Texas, he was also known for his drops and inopportune penalties costing his team in delicate situations. Davis was not drafted, but signed a free agent contract with the Oakland  Raiders.  The Raiders cut him, but he signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

14. Taylor Bible – Texas (6-3, 280) DT; Denton, Texas: Taylor was just a flat out bust. He showed up at Texas extremely overweight and could not seem to drop back down to the 280 range where he was very productive as a youngster. From Texas, he transferred to Cisco Junior College and then to Carson Newman in Tennessee.

15. Ahmad Dixon – Baylor (6-1, 195) Safety; Waco, Texas: Amazing thing was Dixon committed to Texas and switched to Baylor and that’s all I will type out about that. Dixon played some as a true freshman and took over as a starter during his sophomore season. Dixon was one of the team’s top tacklers his last 3 seasons and made All Big 12. He was drafted in the 7th round by the Dallas Cowboys but is currently with the Minnesota Vikings.

16. DeMarcus Milliner – Alabama (6-0, 185) CB; Millbrook, Alabama: He went by Dee Milliner

and started as a freshman at Alabama for 11 games and was a freshman All American. He started 6 games as a sophomore and then every game as a junior and he was a consensus All American in 2012. Milliner ran an impressive 4.35 40 at the NFL Combine after he had declared for the NFL. The New York Jets selected Milliner with their first round pick at the number 9 spot and that’s where Milliner is presently.

17. Owamagbe Odighizuwa – UCLA (6-3, 235) DE; Portland, Oregon: This guy was born in Columbus, Ohio, but then moved back to his families’ native Nigeria before eventually moving back to Portland, Oregon. He then signed with UCLA where he started 6 games as a true freshman. He did not miss a game over the next two seasons and was a productive Defensive Lineman for the Bruins. In 2013, he had surgery on his hip causing him to miss the entire season but he bounced back for his best season at UCLA in 2014. In the 2014 season, the Bruins were a slight disappointment but not Odighizuwa who had 61 tackles with 11 and a half tackles for loss and 6 Quarterback sacks. He impressed the New York Giants scouts who drafted him in the 3rd round of the most recent NFL Draft.

18. Demarco Cobbs – Texas (6-1, 200) Ath; Tulsa, Oklahoma: As already stated, Texas and Florida killed it in this class but many of these guys were busts. Cobbs came to Texas as one of the most  widely sought after Safety prospects in the country. He was moved to Outside Linebacker to get more speed and athletic ability on the field. Cobbs wound up starting about 6 games during his time in Austin and that just has to be considered a huge disappointment.

19. Marcus Lattimore – South Carolina (6-0, 214) RB; Duncan, Oklahoma: Lattimore was one of my favorite players over the last few years because of his hard running style. Lattimore ran for 1,197 yards and 17 Touchdowns as a true freshman. During his sophomore season, Lattimore had 818 yards rushing in game 7 when he severely injured his knee against Mississippi State. He ran for 246 yards

and 3 Touchdowns that season against Navy. In 2012, Lattimore came back from his knee injury and had 662 yards rushing before another severe knee injury sidelined him again. He announced for the NFL and was drafted by the 49ers in the 4th round. He has since retired from football due to the knee injuries.

20. Darius White – Texas (6-3, 195) WR; Fort Worth, Texas: White never seemed to fit in at Texas. He caught 1 pass as a true freshman and 5 as a sophomore before transferring to Missouri. White had to sit out the 2012 season and then caught 7 passes in 2013. As a senior in 2014, White caught 30 passes for 372 yards and 4 Touchdowns.

21. Tony Jefferson – Oklahoma (6-0, 195) Ath; Chula Vista, California: After starting as a true freshman, Jefferson made Freshman All American teams. He got better every season until his junior year in 2012 he led the defense in tackles with 119 total and 2 Interceptions. Jefferson declared for the NFL after his junior season and was not drafted. But, he signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals where he currently plays.

22. Storm Johnson – Miami (5-11, 180) RB; Logansville, Georgia: Johnson rushed for only 119 yards on limited carries at Miami as a true freshman. He transferred to the University of Central Florida and had to sit out a year. He was a back up in 2012 but still rushed for over 500 yards. During his junior year, he rush for 1,139 yards and helped UCF gain national exposure as well as Quarterback Blake Bortles. Like Bortles, Johnson declared for the NFL Draft. Johnson was drafted in the 7th round by the Jacksonville Jaguars where he currently plays.

23. Markeith Ambles – USC (6-2, 185) WR; McDonough, Georgia: Typically, off field troubles cost another hot shot player a promising college career. Ambles only caught 1 pass while at USC before transferring to Arizona Western College. From there, he signed with the Houston Cougars. He caught 17 passes as a junior and then finished up with 32 catches his last season.

24. Ja’Wuan James – Tennessee (6-6, 285) OT; Suwanee, Georgia: James started 49 straight games for the Volunteers. Although Tennessee struggled while James was there, he was a true bright spot.

He was drafted in the 1st round by the Miami Dolphins where he started every game as a rookie. James is a true success story.

25. Sharrif Floyd – Florida (6-3, 309) DT; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Floyd started a few games as a true freshman. As a sophomore, Floyd was one of the Gators top players and again as a junior when he had 3 Quarterback sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Floyd declared for the NFL Draft and that proved a wise decision because the Minnesota Vikings picked him in the 1st round of the 2013 Draft with pick number 23. Floyd has 7 Quarterback sacks in the NFL so far.

Others of interest:

28. Joshua Shaw – Florida (6-2, 181) CB, Palmdale, California: Joshua Shaw redshirted as a freshman at Florida, and then played quite a bit as a redshirt freshman even started a game. Before the 2012 season Shaw transferred to USC. In 2013, Shaw was an outstanding Cornerback for the Trojans. Shaw got in some trouble before the 2014 season and was suspended by the Trojans. He was drafted in the 4th round by the Cincinnati Bengals.

32. Phillip Sims – Alabama (6-1, 218) QB; Chesapeake, Virginia: Not to be confused with Blake Sims, Phillip was a total bust at Alabama and also when he transferred to Virginia.

34. Mack Brown – Florida (5-11, 185) RB; Lithonia, Georgia: Mack Brown has been mostly a

reserve with the Gators, but his name matching the Texas coach is amusing. His best season came in 2013 when he ran for 543 yards

40. Lache Sistrunk – Oregon (5-11, 190) RB; Temple, Texas: Signed with Oregon and was one of those guys with a ‘handler’ named Willie Lyles. Sistrunk transferred to Baylor where he rushed for over a thousand yards for 2 seasons. Sistrunk was drafted by the Washington Redskins but bounced to the Carolina Panthers and then to Tennessee.

42. William Gholston – Michigan State (6-7, 250) DE; Detroit, Michigan: Michigan State doesn’t land that many highly ranked recruits. Gholston played as a freshman for the Spartans but started as a sophomore and as a junior and declared for the NFL. He was drafted in the 3rd round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he currently plays.

52. Chaz Green – Florida (6-5, 286) OT; Tampa, Florida: After redshirting as a true freshman, Green started as a redshirt freshman and as a sophomore, but missed 2013 due to injury. Started 11 games last year and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 4th round of the 2015 draft.

53. Christian Green – Florida State (6-1, 190) Ath; Tampa, Florida: His best season was his redshirt freshman year when he had 26 catches.

64. Louis Nix – Notre Dame (6-3, 318) DT; Jacksonville, Florida: After a solid career at Notre Dame plays for the Houston Texans.

79. Cody Riggs – Florida (5-8, 154) CB; Ft Lauderdale, Florida: Riggs played immediately as a true freshman and he started as a sophomore for the Gators. Riggs was redshirted due to injury during his junior season. He returned the following season and started every game. Riggs graduated from Florida and then transferred to Notre Dame to play his last season. For the Fighting Irish, Riggs started every game at Cornerback. Riggs is now with the Tennessee Titans.

81. Leon Orr – Florida (6-5, 315) DT; New Port Richey, Florida: Career back up for the Gators that was booted off the team in 2014.

83. Luke Joeckel – Texas A%M (6-6, 280) OT; Arlington, Texas: First round pick by Jacksonville.

85. AJ Cann – South Carolina (6-3, 260) OG; Bamberg, South Carolina: 4 year starter at South Carolina and an All American in 2014. Was drafted by Jacksonville in the 3rd round.

90. Jake Matthews – Texas A%M (6-5, 270) OT; Missouri City, Texas: Son of Bruce Matthews was first round pick by Atlanta.

96. Kolton Houston – Georgia (6-5, 265) OG; Buford, Georgia: Houston was once banned from college football for life, but the NCAA is a joke. He stuck around and finally got reinstated and started several games in 2013. Houston started every game in 2014 and was granted a 6th year of eligibility and will be a starter again in 2015. NCAA should be ashamed of themselves for treating this guy like this while others cheat rampantly.

99. CJ Mosely – Alabama (6-2, 215) LB; Theodore, Alabama: This guy should have been rated

much higher. Was a freshman All American in 2010 and never looked back. The Baltimore Ravens drafted him in the 1st round of the 2014 NFL Draft and he made All Pro as a rookie. Great player.

102. Anthony Barr – UCLA (6-4, 223) Ath; Torrance, California: Offensive player played Running Back, Wide Receiver and Tight End his first 2 seasons for UCLA. He moved to Outside Linebacker and was an instant star. Minnesota Vikings drafted him with the 9th pick of the 1st round and he had 4 sacks as a rookie.

124. Kelcy Quarles – South Carolina (6-4, 260) DT; Greenwood, South Carolina: Outstanding lineman for the Gamecocks. Strangely, he went undrafted after declaring early. But, he signed with the Giants and is now with Indianapolis.

126. Garry Peters – Clemson (6-0, 183) Ath; Conyers, Georgia: Peters redshirted and then came along slowly but was all ACC his last year with the Tigers. Strangely, he too was not drafted and he also signed with the Carolina Panthers and has a shot at making the team.

128. Devin Gardner – Michigan (6-4, 198) QB; Inkster, Michigan: A promising career that took a horrible tumble as a senior. He signed with New England and will attempt to play Wide Receiver there. I am pulling for him. He showed outstanding class by going onto the field and speaking to Ohio State Quarterback JT Barrett when he was injured.

132. Brian Vogler –  Alabama (6-6, 245) TE; Columbus, Georgia: Strong blocking Tight End for Crimson Tide. He ran a 4.68 in the 40 yard dash at Alabama Pro day. Signed with Chicago Bears.

136. JR Ferguson – LSU (6-3, 275) DT; Frederick, Maryland: Ego Ferguson was taken in the 2nd round by the Chicago Bears where he currently plays.
