Kamryn Pettway Auburn

During the Auburn Spring Game, they started feeding the ball to Fullbacks Kamryn Pettway and Chandler Cox. I remember thinking they were really good at factors of the game other than blocking. Both of them had some really nice, long runs. For big guys, I was also pleasantly surprised by their speed. While I do believe that Chandler Cox should get a few carries, Kamryn Pettway is doing an outstanding job at Running Back for the Tigers.

I love it when teams pound the ball with huge Running Backs wearing down the defense so that they can crush them in the fourth quarter. I don’t really get the modern day football mentality and the dismissal of the Fullback from today’s offenses.

Kamryn Pettway is listed at 6-0, 240 which is probably accurate, but he seems a little bigger.

Pettway didn’t get any carries in game one which was a loss against Clemson. He also didn’t play against

Louisiana Monroe which was a big win for the Tigers, 58-7.

In spite of only playing in 5 out of 7 of the 5-2 Auburn War Eagle’s games, Pettway still as 697 rushing yards on 118 carries and 6 Touchdowns.

The Auburn Tigers started the season with few people giving them much hope. The once very popular head coach of Auburn found himself on the coaching hot seat. Gus

Losing to Clemson in game one didn’t help matters much, but then Clemson was ranked in the top 5 so it was mostly expected.

They crushed Arkansas State in their second game and Kamryn Pettway had his coming out party. On only 15 carries, Pettway ran for 152 yards. That’s a very impressive debut since he averaged over 10 yards per carry.

The Tigers played poorly and lost to Texas A$M. The 1-2 Tigers were unranked and the faithful were grumbling. A lot of Auburn fans were probably day dreaming of Coach Gus Malzahn’s head on a platter.

But, that would have been premature. The bright spot about that loss was another nice performance by the 240 pound Pettway and he rushed for 123 yards on 20 carries and he scored his first Touchdown.

The following week, LSU shut down Pettway holding him to his lowest rushing total of the season at 61 yards. But, the Auburn Tigers beat the other Tigers of LSU and caused them to fire their coach, Les Miles.

In the big Auburn win over Louisiana Monroe, Pettway didn’t play at all.

Kerryon Johnson took up the slack in that game, running for 146 yards and 2 Touchdowns.

It has been the last 2 Auburn games that Pettway has exploded.

Against division rivals Mississippi State and Arkansas, the Auburn Tigers have really turned it up a few notches. The Tigers beat the Bulldogs, 38-14 and they beat the Razorbacks, 56-3.

Coming into those games, Pettway had been good. But, he had scored only a single Touchdown and his rushing success had been sporadic.

Pettway ran for 169 yards and 3 Touchdowns against Mississippi State and then for 192 yards and 2 Touchdowns against Arkansas.

On the 2016 season, Pettway now has 3 yards short of 700 with 697 yards on the ground and 6 touchdowns. He is averaging nearly 6 yards per carry.

With 5 games remaining and all but the Alabama game easily winnable, the 5-2 Auburn Tigers now have a shot at a really good season. Instead of firing Gus Malzahn as the talk had been before the season began and continued when the Tigers were 1-2, they can now start looking at a possible SEC Championship and a good bowl game.

Thanks to improved defense, good Offensive Line play, the emergence of Sean White at Quarterback and Kamryn Pettway at Running Back, the Auburn football program once again has solid hope.

It’s a good thing they didn’t fire Gus Malzahn.

Kamryn Pettway looks like a serious emerging star in college football.
