Deshaun Watson Clemson Super Star

Chad Kelly says he is the best Quarterback in the country. Normally, if you are the best other people will say it and you won’t need to blow your own horn.

Clearly, the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly, has forgotten that he originally signed with Clemson. Head coach Dabo Swinney named Senior Cole Stoudt as his starter ahead of Chad Kelly and freshman Deshaun Watson.

Apparently, Kelly threw a temper tantrum and got himself booted from the Clemson team. He might now be the best Quarterback in the SEC at Ole Miss, but he would be about the third best behind Watson and Brad Kaaya in the ACC. I’m not the only one that believes that.

Clemson may have wished they had kept Chad Kelly in 2014 because Watson was injured quite a bit and Stoudt did not remain out of the training room, either. The question may have been at the time

whether Watson could make it through a season healthy.

But, the 2015 season was a different story.

In the old recruiting matters debate, Watson was also an incredible high school Quarterback. So incredible, in fact, that he was the top rated Dual Threat Quarterback recruit in the country. At Gainesville High School, Watson was a 4 year starter. He threw for over 2,000 yards as a freshman and he ran for over 500 yards. Not too shabby considering he was probably 14 or 15 years old.

Over his high school career, Watson threw for 13,077 yards and 155 Touchdowns. He did throw 29 Interceptions, but when you consider he attempted 1,458 passes, 29 picks is not so bad.

Watson also ran for 4.057 yards and 59 Touchdowns. His best season as a high school Quarterback was during his junior year of 2012 when he threw for 4,024 yards and 50 Touchdowns while running for 1,441 yards and 24 Touchdowns. That was also the year that his Gainesville team won the state championship in Georgia.

Watson set several state records such as total yardage and Touchdowns.

Watson was recruited by everybody, obviously. He was one of the better Dual Threat Quarterbacks to come around in a while.

In my first year with this blog, I had Watson as the top guy in my All Freshman team predictions and he has more than lived up to my and everyone’s expectations.

During his sophomore season, Watson had the numbers to promote him to legend status.

Watson attempted 491 passes and completed 333 of them for a nice 67.8 completion rate. Those completions totaled a fantastic 4,104 yards and 35 Touchdowns. He did throw 13 Interceptions, but like any great Quarterback, he shrugged those off.

What made Watson even more dangerous was that in between Clemson Running Back Wayne Gallman running for 1,527 yards and 13 Touchdowns and his own 4,000 plus passing yards, Watson also ran for 1,105 yards.

He totaled 12 Touchdowns running to complement his 35 Touchdown passes.

Clemson, obviously, lost to the Crimson Tide in the national championship game. But, unlike Alabama, Clemson has their Quarterback returning, their top Running Back returning, most of their Offensive Line and Wide Receivers returning as well.

Besides Wayne Gallman, Clemson also returns stars like Artivus Scott, Mike Williams, Deon Cain, Hunter Renfrow, Ray-Ray McCloud and Trevion Thompson. Renfrow was a walk-on and former Clemson Quarterback Tajh Boyd says he has NFL talent.

That’s before you consider true freshman 6-5, 200 4 star Diondre Overton from Greensboro, North Carolina. Then, there’s 4 star true freshman Tavares Chase and former 4 star recruit Shadell Bell who redshirted last year.

Oh my goodness, it’s an embarrassment of riches as Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has done an incredible job of transforming this program. I have the Clemson Wide Receivers rated as the best in the country: WRs

The return of Mike Williams will be huge for the Tigers. He is big time.

Tight End Jordan Leggett is also big time and one of the best Tight Ends in the country. He’s certainly a top 5 Tight End and back for his senior season.

There is much depth behind Leggett such as Herschel Walker’s nephew Milan Richard. TE

Mitch Hyatt at Left Tackle returns for his sophomore season while leading the Offensive Line. Center Jay Guillermo and Right Tackle Jake Fruhmorgan along with Guard Tyrone Crowder could make for one of the nation’s better Offensive Lines.

That’s just the offense, and the defense has some rebuilding to do. But, the athletes and the talent is

there, for sure.

Deshaun Watson finished third in last year’s Heisman race and he is one of the favorites going into the 2016 football season along with Leonard Fournette of LSU and last year’s second place winner, Christian McCaffrey.

He has almost everybody back on offense. His defense will be almost as good as last year’s depending on the replacements mostly in the Defensive Backfield.

It’s looking like the 2016 college football season could be the year of the Clemson Tigers and Deshaun Watson.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, again, deserves many congratulations for putting together something of a machine on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains of South Carolina. The Clemson Tigers with their defense and many offensive weapons will be much fun to watch in 2016, even if you are a hater.

The schedule will be tough opening at Auburn, a surging Louisville, but mostly with the mighty Florida State Seminoles to be played at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.

The Seminoles return their entire offense which is loaded.

Whatever happens in 2016, expect it to be the last in college football for the remarkable Deshaun Watson as he takes his talent and becomes a millionaire.
