With Scooby Wright Sidelined

With Scooby Wright out of the lineup, who is going to be the nation’s leading tackler in 2015 from the Linebacker position?

In the 2014 college football season, Scooby Wright from Arizona had 163 tackles with 29 tackles for loss, 14 Quarterback sacks, 6 fumbles caused and he was guilty of generally wrecking havoc all over  the football field. He led the nation in 3 categories last year, which were total tackles, tackles for loss and fumbles forced. He was fabulous and a joy to watch. Arizona hasn’t been known for defense since the days of the Desert Swarm back in the 19902 with Tedy Bruschi and Rob Waldrop.

In the Wildcats first game this season, Wright went down with a knee injury.

Supposedly, Scooby Wright has recovered from surgery and will be back this week against UCLA, but he clearly won’t put up the same kind of numbers he created as a sophomore. He had 1 tackle when he was forced to leave the game and has a lot of ground to make up, but the Wildcats defense needs him badly.

Last season Scooby Wright won the Lombardi, Chuck Bednarik and Bronko Nagurski awards and his loss is a pretty big loss for not only Arizona, but for the game of college football.

However, his loss also opens up the opportunity for another player to emerge and make a name for himself.

Some of the leading candidates so far are Kentrell Brothers, a 6-1, 235 senior from Guthrie, Oklahoma who leads the Missouri Tigers in tackles.

Another, so far, is Riley Bullough, the 6-2, 230 Middle Linebacker from Traverse City, Michigan. Bullough’s grandfather, father, uncle, older brother and younger brother all have either played at Michigan State or are on the team currently.

Senior Blake Martinez, a 6-2, 245 head knocker from Tucson, is Stanford’s leading tackler and very aggressive.

Another Big 10 terror is Anthony Walker from Northwestern. Walker is actually one of those ballers out of Miami, Florida and a leader on one of the nation’s best defenses.

Zach Vigil of Utah State finished second to Scooby Wright in total tackles in 2014 and he’s now  with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL. But, his younger brother Nick Vigil has stepped to the forefront and is now the leading tackler for Utah State. The younger Vigil is 6-2, 235 and played both ways in 2014, but is focusing on Linebacker in 2015.

More Linebackers in the race for top tackler include Jalen Reeves-Maybin of Tennessee, Dominique Alexander of Oklahoma, Skai Moore of South Carolina and Reggie Ragland of Alabama.

A few freshmen challengers include Malik Jefferson of Texas, Cameron Smith of USC, and Dakota Allen of Texas Tech

The season is only 3 games deep and there is plenty of time for somebody to emerge.
