Auburn Spring Game 2014

Auburn’s Spring Game was actually fun to watch. Head Coach Gus Malzahn matched up 1’s vs 2’s which some people hate, but it made for fun viewing regardless of how some feel about it.

Some people have written Auburn off for next season, but I believe that’s a bit inaccurate.

There is a new Auburn super star on the horizon. Junior College Transfer D’haquille Williams was the number 1 Wide Receiver recruit in the country and the number 1 JC recruit overall and the experts are right. Thankfully, we are going to call him Duke Williams instead of D’haquille Williams. Auburn already had an outstanding group of receivers in Sammie Coates, Quan Bray, Ricardo Louis, Tony Stevens, and Marcus Davis. When you add Williams to that group, they might just be the best group of receivers in the country.

Some might argue that there’s nobody to get the ball to them and Nick Marshall is only a runner. That wasn’t true last season and will be less true this year because Marshall has really improved and has the summer to continue to get better.

Auburn lost it’s outstanding RB, Tre Mason. But, they do have 2 returning guys that are outstanding and should pick up the slack. Corey Grant is more of the speed guy and Cameron Artis-Payne is more of a power runner, but both are fast and productive. In the Summer, Roc Thomas will be arriving and he is the 5th rated Running Back in the country. His videos are incredible to watch. Kamryn Pettway is a 225 pound back that can move.

6-4,270 Brandon Fulse will be the new Fullback/H Back.

Funny how different programs around the country held people out of the Spring Game. Auburn held out 4 year starter, Reese Dismukes.

Shon Coleman, my hero, played at Left Tackle and looked spectacular. To be 6-6 and 310 and actually ripped is impressive. Returning starters Alex Kozan, Chad Slade and

Avery Young started on the Offensive line. While Xavier Dampeer filled in at Center.

Gabe Wright lined up at Defensive End with the first team and Elijah Daniel at the other. Carl Lawson sat out.

Ben Bradley and Angelo Blackson played at Defensive Tackle. Cassanova McKinzy and Kris Frost played LB. Jonathon Jones and Jonathon Mincy lined up at CB and Derrick Moncrief, Robenson Therezie and Jermaine Whithead were the other DBs. First team defense did not surrender much to the back up offenses.

Jonathon Wallace is 3rd team QB and Tommy Tuberville’s son, Tucker, is the 4th string QB.

Auburn lost 3 starters from one of the better offenses in the country, but they have quality replacements already in place. Defense should be tough. I have them ranked #3 this season and right now I feel pretty good about that. Still, they play in the SEC West and it would be pretty easy to lose a few games if things don’t bounce their way this season.
