Championship Weekend and Such

The most hyped up game of the week will be the SEC Championship game in Atlanta.

Alabama, the champion of the West, will take on the East champion, Indiana. Oh, Indiana beat the East champion but is a bottom dweller in the Big 10 Conference and not in the SEC.

Alabama versus the Missouri Tigers will be the game of the week. Bama should win this game, but everyone keeps overlooking the Missouri Tigers and need I remind you that the Tigers are the only team in the SEC that does not have a losing record against the Tide? The Tigers played in the SEC Championship game last season and is back this season to prove people wrong about themselves. Their defense was awful last year and is much improved this season led by pass rushing Defensive Ends Shane Ray and Markus Golden.

Alabama really is the best team in the country right now, but that is mostly by default. The Crimson Tide wins another SEC Championship to double up on number of titles by anyone else in that league. The SEC really does belong to the Crimson Tide.
For me, it’s really hard to get past Missouri’s loss to Indiana.

Over in Charlotte, North Carolina the 10-2 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have to leave their home town of Atlanta passing SEC fans along the way, and play the 12-0 Florida State Seminoles.

I believe that the Seminoles luck will run out against Georgia Tech. Florida State run defense has struggled this year and nobody can exploit that more than Georgia Tech.

If Georgia Tech gets the Fullback running up the middle they are almost unstoppable. I am picking Georgia Tech in an upset, but Florida State has been resilient all season and could win yet another ACC Championship.  I just don’t think they will.

Out West on Friday night, the Arizona Wildcats surprised everybody and won the South. The Oregon Ducks, on the other hand, surprised nobody by winning the North. This is a rematch and I generally hate rematches. Arizona is the only team to beat the Ducks this season and is standing in their way of a playoff selection. Arizona also beat Oregon last season, which kind of seems like they have Oregon’s number.

Arizona has had an amazing and fun season, but the Oregon Ducks should win the Pac 12 Championship and gain a playoff berth.

In the north, Wisconsin takes on Ohio State in Indianapolis. Wisconsin is the number 2 rated team in the nation in total defense which is not good for the Ohio State Buckeyes with their 3rd string

Quarterback, Cardale Jones.  The Badgers defense should be too tough for the Buckeyes without JT Barrett. Ohio State has an outside shot at a playoff selection if they win here, but I think the Badgers take them with super star Running Back Melvin Gordon and with the Buckeyes missing their Quarterback.

Oklahoma State travels to Oklahoma for their annual Bedlam game. Oklahoma started the season with national title hopes and has been a disappointment. Oklahoma State surprised people with their start against Florida State, but they have gone downhill since that time going 5-6 on the season. Even

a good Oklahoma State has never done well against Oklahoma and the Sooners win here yet again.

Kansas State is at Baylor. If this game was at Kansas State, it would be a blowout win for the Wildcats. But, Baylor will win this game at home. Baylor barely survived awful Texas Tech last weekend which should be a factor to the Selection Committee, but the committee won’t get it. Kansas State is probably one of the better coached teams in the country and should have beaten highly ranked Auburn, but they have too many walk-on players in their 2 deep roster.

Conference USA has their championship game this weekend as well. Louisiana Tech takes on one time unbeaten Marshall. The Thundering Herd of Marshall suffered their only defeat of the year last week in an incredible shootout against Western Kentucky. WKU wound up winning 67-66 in Overtime.

Can the Marshall coaching staff even say the word ‘defense’? Marshall should beat Louisiana Tech, but that’s mostly because Tech isn’t that good since Sonny Dykes left the program for California.

Houston Cougars travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats in the American Conference. Houston has had a decent season and is 7-4 and 5-2 in the American Conference. Cincinnati is 8-3 and 6-1 in Conference play. The Bearcats and Quarterback Blair Kiel win this one and it will be interesting to see if Kiel sticks around. The kid can be a good one next season if he does.

On Thursday night, the UCF Knights are at East Carolina. Both schools are 8-3 on the year and both could have done even better. The Pirates of East Carolina should win at home, however, the

University of Central Florida Knights have one of the better defenses in the country and could really challenge the Pirates. Knight Linebacker Terrance Plummer is one of the nation’s better Linebackers.

Shane Carden is an amazing Quarterback for East Carolina and will top the 4,000 yard passing mark during this game.

East Carolina Wide Receiver Justin Hardy will go over 100 receptions in this game as well.

Friday night, Northern Illinois takes on Bowling Green in the Marathon MAC Football

Championship at Detroit, Michigan. Bowling Green is 7-5 on the season and Northern Illinois is

10-2. Sophomore Quarterback Drew Hare is much like Jordan Lynch and a fine runner and passer. Northern Illinois got roughed up badly by Arkansas early in the season but has played well since then and should beat Bowling Green fairly easily.

Mountain West Championship Game features Fresno State at Boise State and I will not watch because of that blue turf. I may be a hypocrite in many ways, but I will not cross the blue football turf barrier.  It hurts my feelings for a green playing field to be blue. Plus, the home team is blue and

looks like another form of cheating since you can’t see the home team all that well.

Boise State should blow them out, but Fresno has gotten better as the year has progressed.

Bring on the Bowl Games.
