Players of the Week November 15th

Melvin Gordon – Wisconsin Running Back. Gordon made a major, major, major push in the Heisman Trophy race.

Gordon had 16 carries for 238 yards and 1 rushing Touchdown. That was in the first half.

The second half put Melvin Gordon in the record books. Right in the middle of a snow storm in Madison, Wisconsin, Melvin Gordon ran for an amazing 408 yards on 25 carries. Averaging 16.3 yards per carry, Gordon led his Wisconsin Badgers to a 59-24 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Huskers were the leaders of the Big 10 West but Wisconsin takes over now. Both teams are 8-2 on the season but Wisconsin owns the win in the head to head match up.

Gordon now has 1,909 yards on the season with games remaining against Iowa and Minnesota. Both of those schools are good teams at times but he should be able to smash the 2,000 yard barrier.

Gordon may be too far behind to win the Heisman, but he is gaining rapidly.

The 6-1, 210 Junior from Kenosha, Wisconsin has 4,237 career yards and 39 Touchdowns. The amazing stat for Gordon is he has averaged over 8 yards per carry during his entire career including his junior season.

No doubt he leaves after this season for the NFL and he is possibly the most explosive and dangerous Running Back in the country.

Nelson Agholer- USC Wide Receiver: Playing on a national television audience on a Thursday night, Agholer really put on a show. The 6-1, 190 junior from Tampa, Florida caught 16 passes for 216 yards and 2 Touchdowns in helping his USC Trojans to a 38-30 win over the California Golden Bears. Agholer’s most impressive reception and play of the night was called back due to a holding penalty, or his numbers would have been even better.

Agholer is one of the better players in America and not much is ever said about him. On the season, Agholer has 82 receptions for 1,079 yards and 10 Touchdowns. Nelson Agholer is also an excellent punt return man with 15 returns for 13.07 average and 2 more Touchdowns.

James Conner- Pittsburgh Running Back. 6-2, 250 James Conner is not a stranger to this list and consider this blog a fan of Conner. James Conner is my kind of Running Back with his size and his heart and consider me a fan of pounding your opponent with a huge power attack.

Conner was up to his old tricks this past Saturday in doing his best for his Pittsburgh Panthers, but they still fell 35-40 against ACC opponent North Carolina. Pittsburgh has been a bit of a disappointment this season and fell to 4-6 on the season.

It was Conner’s 3rd 200 plus yard game of the season while rushing for 1,562 yards and 21 Touchdowns.

Conner was recruited as a Defensive End and there has been talk of him playing both ways, but he is far too valuable at Linebacker for the Panthers.

Tevin Coleman – Indiana Running Back. Kind of forgotten among the stars of this football season is Tevin Coleman from Indiana. The Hoosiers lost to Big 10 newcomer Rutgers on Saturday 45-23, but it wasn’t the fault of Indiana Running Back Tevin Coleman. He rushed for 307 yards and a Touchdown on 32 carries on Saturday which would have been even more impressive if not for the sensational day of Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon.

Coleman has run for 1,678 and 12 Touchdowns in an otherwise disappointing 3-7 season for the Hoosiers. The Hoosiers are 0-6 in the Big 10 conference but 1-0 against the mighty SEC with a win over Missouri and the Tigers are 8-2 on the season.

Coleman is a 6-1, 210 Junior from Tinley Park, Illinois and has rushed for 2,861 yards and 25 Touchdowns during his career in Bloomington. I would expect him to declare for the NFL draft after this season but would love to see him back at Indiana next season.

Coleman was only a 3 star Wide Receiver recruit out of high school but he bulked up a bit and moved to Running Back and has developed into a star.

JT Barrett – Ohio State Quarterback. Barrett was a player of the week last week after his amazing performance against Michigan State. He is here again because he led his Buckeyes past a decent ball club in the Minnesota Gophers this past Saturday.

Barrett threw for 200 yards on 15 completions out of 25 passing attempts. The 15 completions were good for 3 Touchdowns. Those aren’t good numbers, necessarily, but it was snowing heavily in Minnesota.

Plus, Barrett also rushed for 189 yards on 17 carries and another Touchdown.

The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Minnesota Gophers 31-24 and are still undefeated in Big 10 play. The Buckeyes only lost one game in something of a puzzler to the Virginia Tech Hokies which never should have happened and they possibly are still in the running for a playoff spot.
