Going Way Back, Class of 2006 How Did ESPN Do?

1. Myron Rolle – Florida State (6-3, 210) S, Galloway, New Jersey: Rolle was a Rhodes Scholar originally from the Bahamas. The 2008 season was probably his best and he earned 3rd team All American honors. Rolle was drafted in the 6th round by the Tennessee Titans, made his way to the Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring from football and entering medical school where he really belonged.

2. Percy Harvin – Florida (6-1, 188) WR, Virginia Beach, Virginia: Clearly they got this pick right

as Harvin was a star in college. After 3 seasons in Gainesville, Harvin declared for NFL and was picked by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1st round at #22.

3. Vidal Hazelton – USC (6-2, 195) WR, Chatham, Virginia: He was a back up as a freshman at USC. In 2007, Hazelton led the Trojans in receptions with 50. An injury limited his playing time in 2008 and he was passed on the depth chart by another talented Receiver at USC. He transferred to Cincinnati and then found his way to the National Football League as an undrafted player. He bounced around from team to team until he finally made his way into the Canadian Football League.

4. Andre Smith – Alabama (6-5, 302) OT, Birmingham, Alabama: Smith was the real deal and started every game at Left Tackle as a true freshman at Alabama. He was a Consensus All-American, won the Outland Trophy for the nation’s best lineman, and was picked with the 6th selection of the 1st round in the 2009 NFL Draft. It would be hard to match what Andre Smith has done on the football field at any level.

5. Matthew Stafford – Georgia (6-3, 210) QB, Highland Park, Texas: I probably don’t even need to write anything here. Stafford started as a true freshman at Georgia and every year after before declaring for the NFL and becoming the very first player picked.

6. DeMarco Murray – Oklahoma (6-1, 190) RB, Las Vegas, Nevada: Coming out of celebrated Bishop Gorman High school in Las Vegas, Murray redshirted as a true freshman at Oklahoma. The Sooners had a fella named Adrian Peterson during the 2006 season. Murray started as a redshirt freshman in 2007 and the following 3 seasons. The Dallas Cowboys selected Murray in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft and last season Murray led the NFL in rushing yardage. Murray just broke the hearts of Cowboy fans and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

7. Sergio Kindle – Texas (6-3, 220) OLB, Dallas, Texas: Kindle was a good player at Texas outside of injuries and off the field issues. When he was on the field, he was very effective as an Outside Linebacker and Defensive End. Because of the same injuries and off field issues, Kindle dropped to the 2nd round in the NFL Draft. Same off field issues pretty much cost him again with a disappointing NFL career as the Ravens grew tired of him in 2012 and cut him. Not a complete waste of talent, but very close.

8. Taylor Mays – USC (6-4, 225) S, Seattle, Washington: Mays is one of the more incredible athletes to ever come along with great size and speed. He won the 100 and 200 meters in high school and has posted some outstanding 40 times over the years. He started 4 seasons for the USC Trojans and then was drafted in the 2nd round by the San Francisco 49ers. Has played for the 49ers, the Cincinnati Bengals and is now with the Minnesota Vikings.

9. Micah Johnson – Kentucky (6-2, 249) ILB, Fort Campbell, Kentucky: Micah Johnson made the All SEC freshman team in 2006 and started every year after that for the Wildcats. He was not selected in the NFL Draft after finishing at Kentucky, but has bounced around the league and is now with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

10. Antwine Perez – USC (6-2, 200) S, Camden, New Jersey: Perez played in a few games as a true freshman at USC, but quickly decided he was not going to play there and transferred to Maryland. After sitting out a season, he started 3 seasons for the Terrapins. He is currently out of football. He’s not exactly Perez Hilton, but he didn’t pan out to what everyone thought he would be, either.

11. Maurice Evans – Penn State (6-3, 250) DE, Middle Village, New York: Evans played some as a true freshman and then turned it on as a sophomore with over 20 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks. He was named to some All American teams for 2008, but then got busted and suspended. He did come back and play but had a sub par season. Then, he elected to leave school for the NFL. He was not drafted and signed with the New York Football Giants, but was cut. He bounced around with several teams and then Canada and is now out of football without a degree. Stay in school, kids.

12. Mitch Mustain – Arkansas (6-3, 205) QB, Springdale, Arkansas: Coached by current Auburn coach Gus Malzahn at Springdale, Mustain could have gone anywhere he wanted. He signed with Arkansas and started his first 8 games in college. When benched, Mustain elected to transfer to USC, of all places. He backed up Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley. Mustain signed with a Canadian Football League team, but was cut and then played Arena League for a couple of years before being released. Mustain also played a year in the Chicago White Sox farm leagues as a pitcher.

Jevan Snead – Texas (6-4, 210) QB, Stephenville, Texas: Snead signed with Texas, but they had redshirt freshman Colt McCoy getting most of the snaps. Snead decided to transfer to Ole Miss and after sitting out a season he started for the Rebels for 2 years. Before his final season, he declared for the NFL Draft and was not drafted. He signed with Tampa Bay, but was released. He signed with an Arena League team but was also released. I don’t know who is advising some of these guys to leave college football.

14. Stafon Johnson – USC (6-1, 210) RB, Bellflower, California: He played sparingly as a true freshman, but had a good sophomore season. During his junior year of 2008, Johnson ran for 705 yards. Johnson was injured in the weight room in 2009 which caused him to miss most of the season and he decided to leave the Trojans for the NFL. He was not drafted. He did sign with the Tennessee Titans and played there briefly before going to the Washington Redskins, also briefly.

15. Tim Tebow – Florida (6-3, 225) QB, Saint Augustin, Florida: Now, here is a name that nobody can forget. Tebow played on 2 national championship teams at Florida and started on the second one. He’s probably the most hyped Quarterback in the history of the sport, but he also won the Heisman Trophy and played briefly in the NFL.

16. Jai Eugene – LSU (5-11, 175) CB, Destrehan, Louisiana: Eugene redshirted as a freshman and then was a backup his first season of eligibility. He started 9 games during his sophomore season. Started some as a junior and then moved to Safety for his senior year. He only started one game at Safety for LSU.

17. Al Woods – LSU (6-4, 315) DT, Elton, Louisiana: Woods was pretty good as a senior at LSU and was drafted by the home town New Orleans Saints. He was cut, but picked up by Pittsburgh, then bounced around to Tampa Bay, Seattle, back to the Pittsburgh Steelers and is now with the Tennessee Titans. He’s not a difference maker in the NFL, but he is hanging on.

18. Marcus Ball – Florida State (6-1, 210) OLB, Stone Mountain, Georgia: Ball didn’t stay long at Florida State before transferring to Pearl River Community College and then to the Memphis Tigers. From Memphis, Ball made his way to the Toronto Argonauts where he played for 2 seasons. Ball then signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints where he is playing currently.

19. Sam Young – Notre Dame (6-8, 295) OT, Coral Springs, Florida: Sam Young became the first ever true freshman Offensive Lineman to start for the Fighting Irish and he started for 50 straight games for Notre Dame. Young was a 6th round pick by the Dallas Cowboys before moving on to Buffalo and is currently with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

20. Brandon Warren – Florida State (6-3, 230) TE, Alcoa, Tennessee: Played at Tight End for the Seminoles in 2006 and was their leading receiver among Tight Ends. Left Florida State and enrolled at Pellissippi College. From Junior College, he transferred to Tennessee where he played in 2008 and 2009.

21. Gerald McCoy – Oklahoma (6-5, 290) DT, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: McCoy redshirted in 2006 and then was the Big 12 freshman of the year in 2007. He was an All American in 2008 and 2009. McCoy as the 3rd player picked in the 2010 NFL Draft and has been a Franchise player. McCoy may have been a little underrated.

22. Eddie Jones – Texas (6-2, 230) DE, Kilgore, Texas: Jones never quite lived up to the rankings partly due to injuries. He did sign with the New York Jets and bounced around the NFL for a while, but is out of football now.

23. Allen Walker – Ole Miss (6-2, 200) S, Olive Branch, Mississippi: Redshirted in 2006, before moving to Linebacker and becoming a steady player for the Ole Miss Rebels. Walker beefed up to 230 pounds before he was done with football.

24. Carl Johnson – Florida (6-6, 325) OT, Durham, North Carolina: His 2006 season was a redshirt and he started 33 games after that while playing in 50. He is currently playing Arena Football.

25. Reshad Jones – Georgia (6-2, 177) S, Atlanta, Georgia: Jones had a good career at Georgia and was a 5th round pick by the Miami Dolphins where he currently plays.
