Christian McCaffrey Stanford

Nothing against Derrick Henry of Alabama and his selection as 2015 Heisman Trophy winner. Henry is a great player and he had a great season in 2015. Running for 2,219 yards and 28 Touchdowns, Henry was sensational in helping his team win the national championship. There’s not any real reason to say that Derrick Henry did not deserve the Heisman Trophy.

Well, except for Christian McCaffrey of Stanford who had an even better season.

After last year’s Rose Bowl, there were a lot of comments from Heisman voters that had they seen McCaffrey play before the Rose Bowl they would have voted for him. Those people should not be

allowed to vote any more.

Last season, Christian McCaffrey broke Barry Sanders decades old single season all purpose total yards record. He didn’t just break it, he smashed it.

McCaffrey ran for 2,019 yards on the ground and he caught 45 passes for 645 yards. He returned 15 punts for 130 yards and he took one back for a Touchdown.

He had 37 Kickoff returns for 1,070 yards and another score. As if those stats weren’t enough, McCaffrey also completed 2 out of 3 passes and both of those completions went for Touchdowns.

For his efforts, McCaffrey wound up second in the Heisman voting. Deshaun Watson came in third. Both McCaffrey and Watson were true sophomores and they were back for the 2016 season.

One would think that McCaffrey, since he finished second the previous season, would be the favorite for the 2016 Heisman. But, that’s not how it turned out.

Going into the season, most of the talk was about Deshaun Watson and his Clemson team.

But, a brand new threat ha emerged in Lamar ‘Action’ Jackson of Louisville who has been incredible so far this season and especially in a 63-20 win over 2nd ranked Florida State.

Christian McCaffrey is a marked man in 2016. Losing Kevin Hogan at Quarterback was not ideal for McCaffrey and Stanford’s run game with opponents putting 8 or 9 in the box and daring the Cardinal to throw the ball.

Stanford opened the 2016 season by hosting the tough Kansas State Wildcats and their seemingly

ageless coach Bill Snyder. The Wildcats are tough, especially on defense where they are currently the top ranked unit in the nation, and they held the Cardinal to 26 points. McCaffrey ran for a very tough 126 yards on 22 carries and 2 Touchdowns.

New Quarterback Ryan Burns completed 14 of 18 passes for 156 yards as the Cardinal won 26-13.

Stanford has played a really tough schedule with no FCS teams like a lot of schools are doing now. The USC Trojans are struggling right now, but they are still a tough out for most schools not named Alabama.

McCaffrey ran for 172 yards against the Men of Troy on 31 carries and another Touchdown. He also scored on a pass reception when the Trojans left him unguarded for some odd reason.

Quarterback Burns only threw for 102 yards against USC so it was mostly on McCaffrey.

Stanford faced a tough Defensive Line led by scary Defensive Lineman Eddie Vanderdoes. He’s not somebody you’d want to meet in a dark alley.

The Bruins held Stanford in check for much of the game with McCaffrey running for 138 yards and no scores.

Stanford had to come alive late in the game and we may have witnessed the maturation of Cardinal Quarterback Ryan Burns as he led his teammates down field for the win.

After not getting the ball in the End Zone for the entire game, Burns drove his team for the winning score. He hit Wide Receiver JJ Arcga-Whiteside for a Touchdown to take the lead.

Outstanding Defensive Lineman Solomon Thomas picked up a loose ball to increase the lead to 22-13 and end the game.

Christian McCaffrey has 436 yards rushing on 79 attempts and 3 Touchdowns. He has 12 receptions for 119 yards and another Touchdown.

He had a 96 yard punt return for a score against Kansas State, but that one was called back. He will have some more big plays on returns.

Next up for Stanford is a really tough Washington squad that many think will win the Pac 12. Washington is 4-0 and they barely survived an Overtime win over Arizona in Tucson. Washington is a top 10 team with maybe the best defense in the Pac 12. Stanford has faced a really tough schedule and for one more week it is not getting any easier.

But, the following week, they face Washington State, Notre Dame, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon State, Oregon, California and Rice. Surprisingly, Colorado might be the toughest team on that schedule

right now with a 3-1 start.

McCaffrey’s numbers should be much better after the Washington game. Some of those opponents have some of the worst defenses in the country.

Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson probably have huge leads in the Heisman race right now. Christian McCaffrey needs to have a few huge rushing games and a few big returns on punts and kicks.

Nobody at this point of the season last year knew that Christian McCaffrey was one of the top football players in the nation. This year, they do.
