Locketts of Kansas State

The Kansas State Wildcat’s All American Wide Receiver, Tyler Lockett doesn’t normally drop passes.

Against Auburn, this past season, on a nationally televised Thursday night college football game, Tyler Lockett had a Touchdown Pass right in his hands. He not only dropped it but he batted the ball up in the air only to have it intercepted by an alert Auburn Defensive Back.

That dropped pass would cost the Kansas State Wildcats 7 points, obviously, and they wound up losing by 6 points to the Auburn Tigers, 20-14.

That doesn’t happen often at Kansas State.  Oh, they do lose the occasional game.  The losses are far less frequent now than they were before the arrival of  long term head coach Bill Snyder.

Kansas State was a perennial door mat before the 1990’s.

Snyder’s predecessor, Stan Parrish, went a miserable 2-30-1 in 3 years before being sent packing. That was from 1986 to 1988.

Before  Parrish was Jim Dickey who lasted 8 years in spite of a  25- 62-2 record. Dickey had one winning season, a 6-5-1 record in 1982.

Before Dickey, it was one failure after another at Kansas State.

Then, came along Bill Snyder. But, even Snyder found rough going at Kansas State going 1-10 in 1989. Can you imagine what poor Wildcat fans were thinking after yet another newly hired coach went 1-10?

Here we go again, I would guess they thought as yet another coach bites the dust.

In 1990, the Wildcats improved to 5-6. Then, in 1991, Kansas State actually produced a winning record, going 7-4.

But, it was back to 5-6 again and I would imagine Kansas State Wildcat fans were ready to run off yet another failed coach.

That would have been a huge mistake as Snyder got the machine rolling. To further demonstrate how bad the football situation was at Kansas State, Snyder broke the record for most career wins by a Wildcat football coach in his 6th season.

There is a valid reason why the football stadium in Manhattan, Kansas is named the Bill Snyder Family Stadium. He saved that program from permanent obscurity.

The 1993 Kansas State Wildcats put on a show finishing 9-2-1.

The 1993 college football season was also the first year that a Lockett suited up for the Wildcats.

As all Kansas State fans know, Tyler Lockett is not the first Lockett to suit up for the Wildcats while head coach Bill Snyder has been there. He’s an All American Wide Receiver, but I am not even sure Tyler Lockett has been the best Lockett to play for Kansas State.

Tyler is the son of Kevin Lockett who played at Kansas State from 1993 until 1996. Kevin was also a Wide Receiver and punt return guy from

Kevin’s brother and Tyler’s uncle, Aaron, also played Wide Receiver at Kansas State and for Bill Snyder.

All of them played high school football in Tulsa, Oklahoma and at Booker T Washington High School.

NFL players from Booker T Washington, Mark Anderson, RW McQuarters, Robert Meachem, and Felix Jones. NBA players Waymon Tisdale, Etan Thomas, and Ryan Humphrey.

Seems like Booker T Washington players leave the state more than other Oklahoma kids.

Booker T, Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma has won  8 football state championships in the state of Oklahoma. Most of those titles were in the late 1960s when they won in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971 and 1973. The school has won an amazing 15 state championships in boys basketball and many in track and field.

The Locketts have always been involved with winning programs in high school and in college.

Father, uncle, brother, nephew, son which Lockett was the best at Kansas State?

Kevin Lockett is the father of Tyler. He played at KSU from 1993 to 1996 and he caught 216 passes for 3032 yards and 26 Touchdowns during those years.

Kevin was an Academic All American besides all of the other honors he achieved.

When Lockett was finished at Kansas State, he was drafted in the 2nd round by the  Kansas City Chiefs. His career in the NFL was not spectacular and he did bounce from the Chiefs to the Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars and then to New York Jets.  He did manage to catch 130 passes in the NFL.

Kevin’s brother Aaron played at KSU from 2001 to 2004 and he caught 137 passes for 14 touchdowns.

Aaron was one of the faster football players ever at KSU and held some Track and Field records there for a while. At the NFL combine, Kevin Lockwood ran a 4.31 40 yard dash which is smoking fast.

Because of his outstanding speed, Kevin excelled at returns taking 3 back for Touchdowns on punts and he averaged 15.6 yards per return during his career at Kansas State. He also had a Touchdown on a kickoff return and averaged 25 yards per return.

The only problem for Kevin Lockett was he was 5’8″ and 155 pounds. In spite of his tremendous speed, his lack of ideal size dropped him way down on the draft boards. Aaron Lockett was drafted in the 7th round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2002 NFL Draft.

Sadly, the Buccaneers released Aaron Lockett at the end of training camp. He signed on with the San Francisco 49ers and was on their taxi squad for a couple of seasons.

He finished his career in Canada. My greatest memories of Aaron Lockett were as a punt returner at Kansas State. He was fun to watch and dangerous with the ball in his hands.

The son of Kevin and the nephew of Aaron has had a beautiful college career at Kansas State.

Tyler had 249 career catches which tallied 3710 yards and 29 Touchdowns. In limited attempts he rushed for 192 yards as well, but never really broke a longer run.

Like his uncle, Aaron, Tyler was a master of punt returns and on Kickoff returns as well. Tyler averaged 28.5 on Kickoff returns and he took 4 of them for Touchdowns. On Punt returns he averaged  15.3 yards over his 4 year career and he scored 2 Touchdowns. Also like his uncle, Tyler was fun to watch on punt returns and changed many games with his spectacular returns. Tyler has a size advantage over his uncle, but his father Kevin was 6-0, 180.

Tyler is 5-11, 175.

Tyler Lockett is preparing for the 2015 NFL Draft and hopefully he will impress at the combine and be picked by an NFL team.

It is a spectacular season for NFL prospects at Wide Receiver with guys like Amari Cooper, Kevin White, DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong, Devin Funchess and many more. Tyler Lockett will need to show well, but his talents as a return man will help.

After the arrival of Bill Snyder and Kevin Lockett at Kansas State they have had several really talented Wide Receivers including Quincy Morgan, Darnell McDonald and Jordy Nelson.

Nelson is a star currently with the Green Bay Packers.

Kevin Lockett is only 40 years old and his brother Aaron is 37. Maybe we will have a few more Locketts playing at Kansas State before it’s all said and done.

But, even if not, when you think of Kansas State some people will automatically think the name LOCKETT.
