Top Current College Coaches

1. Urban Meyer – Ohio State: 3 national championships at 2 different schools. I don’t see how anyone could argue that Urban Meyer is the best college coach right now. Meyer has a 141 -26 record. Meyer started off at Bowling Green and posted a 17-6 record in 2 seasons. Moving on to Utah, he was 22-2 in 2 seasons before landing the Florida job where he went 65-15 and won 2

national titles. He gave up coaching for a short time before getting hired by Ohio State where he has gone 38-3 in 3 seasons and won the last national title. In my book, the best coach out there presently.

2. Jimbo Fisher – Florida State: Fisher is 58-11 in 5 years of coaching at Florida State with one national championship. Fisher is an outstanding recruiter and expect much more of the same for the Seminoles with the kind of players he is bringing in yearly.

Florida State will trot out some true freshmen this season that will blow people away.

3. Nick Saban – Alabama: Saban and his staff win the recruiting championship every season. Saban is 177-59-1 as a head coach overall. He is 86- 17 as the head man at Alabama. He won national championships at LSU and Alabama.

4. Bill Snyder – Kansas State: Laugh if you want, but Kansas State was a perennial cellar dweller before Snyder came along. What this guy has done at Kansas State is beyond belief. Check the recruiting lists, there aren’t a lot of top players coming off of the Kansas plains. Snyder has done more with so much less and he has done it year after year after year. Snyder retired and the Wildcats took a downturn. He came back and has the Wildcats competitive again. In the 1997 season through the 2000 season, Bill Snyder won more games at Kansas State than any other coach ever did. 8 of his assistant coaches have gone on to head coaching positions.

5. Mark Dantonio – Michigan State:This is not a popularity contest, the list is about the top current college coaches and Dantonio has done a lot at Michigan State. Nick Saban went 34-24-1 at Michigan State. His replacement was John L Smith who left the program a mess. Dantonio took over the program and has gone 75-31 with a 24-3 record over the last 2 seasons which is as good as anyone other than Florida State. Dantonio’s teams win with defense, and old fashioned power football.

6. Gary Patterson – TCU: Dennis Francionne built the Horn Frog program, but Patterson has maintained it and taken it to different levels. Patterson has a 132 – 45 record at TCU without recruiting as much talent as bigger programs. The TCU Hornfrogs were the surprise team of 2014 and are ranked in the top 5 for 2015. You have to respect a guy that does more with less.

7.Jim Harbaugh – Michigan: Stanford was ready to drop football before Harbaugh came along. Harbaugh went 29-6 in 3 seasons at San Diego before taking the Stanford job. He struggled through his first couple of seasons going 4-8 and 5-7 before starting to turn it around. In 2009, Stanford went 8-5 before they took off in 2010 with a 12-1 season and then he left for the San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh has returned to college football to take over his own Michigan Wolverines.

8. Gus Malzahn – Auburn: What Malzahn did at Auburn in 2013 was nothing short of spectacular and even though last season was something of a disappointment, he is still one of the top college

coaches in the game. Hiring Will Muschamp was a good move by him and it will show on the field next season.

9. Art Briles – Baylor: He has changed Baylor, but would be ranked higher if not for the cream puff schedule and his not believing in playing defense. His offenses are second to none. Baylor was the Big 12’s cellar dweller for years before Briles came along so he should get some recognition.

10.Steve Spurrier – South Carolina: Anybody that can win 11 games 3 seasons in a row at South Carolina needs to be on a top coaching list. I don’t like the way he treats his players, but that’s just me. He did wonders at Florida with his fun N Gun offense.
