Players of the Week October 25th

Duke Johnson- Miami. Duke Johnson is one of the least publicized Running Backs in the Nation and he’s also one of the best. Against the always defensive minded Virginia Tech Hokies ran around and through them for 249 yards on 29 yards and 1 Touchdown. Duke Johnson also had 2 catches for 37 yards with 1 of them being a 22 yard Touchdown reception.duke johnson

Johnson is up to 1,036 yards on 139 carries and 7 carries on the season. The 5-9, 205 junior from Miami has 2,903 yards in his career and 23 Touchdowns. No doubt Duke Johnson would have a lot more if not having to miss games from injuries.

Ameer Abdullah- Nebraska. This guy is one of the premier players in the country. Ameer Abdullah had another big day this past weekend with 225 yards on 19 carries and 3 Touchdowns leading the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a big 42-24 win over new Big 10 rival Rutgers.

Abdullah also had 2 catches for 26 yards. Abdullah had 2 Kickoff returns for 90 yards with a long of 76 yards. Abdullah is getting plenty of publicity so he may be gaining ground in the Heisman race since Jameis Winston and Todd Gurley have apparently fallen out of the running.

Abdullah is up to 1,249 yards rushing on the season and 17 Touchdowns. Over his career Abdullah has 4,226 yards and 37 Touchdowns on the ground. He also has 64 receptions and 6 more Touchdowns that way. Ameer Abdullah is only 5-9, 195 but he is as tough as nails and can turn on the jets when he gets in the open field.

Amari Cooper- Alabama. This is the second time that Amari Cooper, from Alabama, has been one of my players of the week.  Cooper is not only one of the top Wide Receivers in the country but he is also one of the overall top players and could and should be on the Heisman Trophy watch list.

Cooper was seen last weekend in Knoxville playing against the Tennessee Volunteers putting up the same kind of numbers we all have come to expect out of Amari Cooper in 2014. He had 9 receptions Saturday for 224 yards and 2 Touchdowns including an 80 yard Touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage.

Cooper has 71 catches on the season so far which has produced 1,132 yards and 9 Touchdowns. This game wasn’t his most productive this season as far as number of catches, but it definitely was his top game as far as yardage.

If Cooper has not improved his Heisman standings, he has definitely increased his popularity with NFL scouts. The 6-1, 210 Miami High School product has 175 career catches and 2,868 yards and 24 Touchdowns with a few more games to go.

If Cooper is not the most exciting player in the country right now, I’d like to know who is.

I have been high on Towles since the Kentucky Spring Game and he has proven me right this season. Patrick Towles is a huge Quarterback at 6-5, 240 and he can run deceptively well. NFL scouts are going to love this guy and will be standing in line when he declares. I do hope he decides to play some more college football and sticks around for a while. He is a star in the making.

Against the #1 team in the nation last Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky in visiting Mississippi State and their Psycho Defense, Towles kept fighting back and had his Wildcats keeping up with the

Bulldogs mostly.

Towles hit 24 passes on 43 attempts for 390 yards and 2 Touchdowns. All of that while being sacked 7 times and being harassed all day by a great defense.

Patrick Towles has been one of the top players in the SEC this season and a good reason why the Wildcats have shocked the nation.

Eric Kendricks – LB UCLA. It’s been an extremely disappointing season for UCLA, but Kendricks has been good to spectacular. UCLA traveled to Colorado and  played the Buffaloes. Kendricks was all over the field with 17 total tackles. Kendricks had one tackle for loss, broke up a pass and had one interception which he returned 21 yards.

Kendricks has almost quietly had a sensational season with 93 tackles so far.

UCLA is 6-2 but most thought they had a shot at the playoffs this year and they have had problems on both sides of the ball. Their Offensive Line has been beyond terrible and Brett Hundley has been the most sacked Quarterback in the entire country. Their defense has plenty of talent but has played well under their potential all season long.

The school that some thought would make the new playoffs is fighting for it’s life and struggled again this past weekend in Boulder, Colorado.

Eric Kendricks has been one of the few bright spots in a hugely disappointing Bruin season.
