The Catholics vs the Convicts II: Well, Maybe Not so Much

One of the more famous games in the history of college football was the Catholics vs Convicts game of 1988. I wrote about the game here on this blog: 1988

Notre Dame won that game and then went on to win the national championship under Lou Holtz and that was the last title for the Fighting Irish.

Miami won the national championship a year later and then again in 1991 and then 2001 before they fell off.

Brian Kelly and his Notre Dame Fighting Irish are going through a gruesome season. It’s been ugly since opening night when they lost to Texas in Overtime.

It started frightfully bad, and it’s gotten much worse. The Irish beat Nevada and they beat Syracuse, but

everyone else has taken all of the fight out of the Fighting Irish.

However, the good thing about Notre Dame’s season is the losses have been close. They lost to Texas by 3, Michigan State by 8, Duke by 3, North Carolina State by 7 and Stanford by 7. They have been in every game they have played, but something is just not adding up.

The Fighting Irish, even though they are currently 2-5, still have some talent. Quarterback DeShone Kizer, Running Back Josh Adams, Wide Receiver Equanimeous St Brown, Offensive Tackle Mike McGlinchey, Offensive Guard Quenton Nelson are talents that are about as good as anyone out there.

Defense, on the other hand, is a much different story.

It’s hard to say which way the Fighting Irish are heading.

But, the Miami Hurricanes are more than likely trending up.

Mark Richt is in his first season at Miami after coaching the Georgia Bulldogs for 15 seasons. He led the Bulldogs to a 145-51 record.

The Hurricanes, in 2016, jumped out to a 4-0 record. But, since then they have lost 3 straight.

However, the first loss was on a blocked extra point against Florida State who despite 2 losses are still a really good football team.

They also lost to North Carolina in a game they very well could have won. Then, on a Thursday night, they lost to a much improved Virginia Tech.

This Miami team is one of the better 4-3 teams in the country and they have several true freshmen starting including all 3 Linebackers. Bermuda Triangle

Miami has had it’s struggles with it’s Offensive Line such s giving up 8 sacks to Virginia Tech on Thursday night.

But, they are strong at Quarterback with 3 year starter Brad Kaaya, and at Running Back and Wide Receiver. Tight End might even be their strongest position with David Njoku and twin talent Christopher Herndon IV, plus Standish Dobard.

Stacy Coley is their top receiver, but their big play guy might be true freshman Ahmmon Richards.

Running Backs Mark Walton, Joseph Yearby and Gus Edwards might be as good as anyone’s group of backs in the country.

Even with the talented skill players,  this Miami team is still at least a couple of years away from being anywhere near the teams the Hurricanes produced in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Miami travels into South Bend and the mind can’t help but think of the games of yesteryear. These teams were pretty big rivals back in those days. Notre Dame, when they were at their best, were big rivals with just about everybody. Games versus Miami, Florida State, USC and Michigan were the stuff of legends

As much as we all would like this game to be as meaningful as that 1988 game, a 2-5 Notre Dame hosting a 4-3 Miami Hurricanes just doesn’t get it done.

This should still be an interesting game to watch.
