Miami Hurricanes Defensive Line 2017

The Miami Hurricanes were a juggernaut in the 1980s through the early 2000s, and powerful teams like those are generally loaded with top players. Miami almost always had great Quarterbacks starting with Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly, with Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, Geoff Torretta, Steve Walsh, Craig Erickson, Gino Torretta and the list goes on.

We could do the same thing with every position.

The Canes had strong Offenses with star Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers, but their defense were always top notch. The Defensive Lines were incredibly talented with guys like Hall of ame member Warren Sapp, Russell Maryland, Cortez Kennedy, Vince Wolfork and Jerome Brown come to mind when talking about those great teams.

However, there’s no doubt about it that the Hurricanes have been in a struggle to survive as a program for the past few years.

The Canes won 5 national titles between 1983 and 2001. Then, the program began to decline under Larry Coker. Randy Shannon and Al Golden could not revive it.

But, in the first season under head coach Mark Richt there are already signs of healing. They only

finished 9-4, but they lost 3 games by really close scores. The Canes lost 0-58 to Clemson and then 21-59 to North Carolina in the 2015 season and finished with an 8-5 record. 2016 was only one win better, but they were much more competitive.

They started 3 true freshmen at Linebacker, and 1 other true freshman at Cornerback. The Offense also had a true freshman at Wide Receiver. Mark Richt’s first class at Miami brought in a lot of fresh new talent.

While the Offense is looking for a new Quarterback for 2017, the defense should be deep and talented and it all starts up front.

Their Defensive Line returns all 4 starters from last season and they threaten to make the Hurricanes a solid contender again. Plus, they have some really talented young players and recruits coming in. It could be good times again for Hurricane fans and really soon.

Kendrick Norton and RJ McIntosh are returning starters at Defensive Tackle. McIntosh lead the Defensive Linemen in tackles last season, but Norton is considered the teams best run stopper. Watching Norton chase down Florida State Quarterback Deondre Francois last season was impressive especially when considering he is 6-3, 305. He showed tremendous quickness on that one particular play and many thought he should have been penalized for roughing the passer. Francois was shaken up from the hit, but it didn’t knock him out of the game.

McIntosh is only slightly smaller at 6-4, 290, but he is also another really productive interior lineman. Last season, McIntosh finished 6th on the team in total tackles with 47. Obviously, you want your Defensive Linemen with a lot of tackles which means most of the action is at the line of scrimmage instead of downfield.

Backing them up are veterans Anthony Moten and Gerald Willis. The Canes booted Courtel Jenkins

from the team, or they would have been really deep here.

Willis signed with Florida out of high school from New Orleans, and then transferred to Miami. He’s a really talented Defensive Lineman when healthy. Moten is 6-4, 315 and Willis is the tiny one of the bunch at 6-4, 285. Don’t let his diminutive stature fool you, the guy is plenty aggressive and quick and has a bad attitude when he makes contact.

Defensive End is crammed full of talent with Chad Thomas and Trent Harris as the starters, probably. But, I wouldn’t rule out Joseph Jackson, or Demetrius Jackson. Other contributors could be Scott Patchan and Pat Bethel.

Defensive End starter Chad Thomas is supposed to be a leader among these guys and he is very vocal. a freshman last season, Joseph Jackson will do nothing but get better and he led the team in sacks with 8 and a half. The Canes finished 22nd in the nation in sacks last season which wasn’t bad, but it needs to be up there with the big boys to beat the big boys.

The Canes had three true freshman at Linebacker last season and they were incredible for such youngsters. But, they lost a good portion of their secondary including top Cornerback Corn Elder. The front 7 may have to cover for them, at least early on.
